I think this second movie does a great job showing how three men (Nascimento, André e Fraga) try to fight the system in three different ways and how André fails for trying to use force against the system, how Fraga fails for believing only law and justice would be enough to fight the system, and how Nascimento obly succeeded because he understood he'd need all these resources and a lot of intelligence to make any progress and end up alive. He and Fraga were rivals until they relized in the end they were on the same side, just fighting with different resources and qhen they teamed up, something good happened.

He ruled out the possibility of shooting a Tropa de Elite 3. "I've already told you everything I wanted to say about the violence", declared the director. [84] Wagner Moura has raised the possibility that a third film will be made without the character played by him. "There are possibilities for a new Elite Squad to exist, but without it. Capitão Nascimento has nowhere else to go in terms of dramaturgy, no matter how much money he can generate", declared the actor in an interview to GQ magazine in September. [85]

This movie includes two references to the film "City of God." The actor at the beginning of the film, who leads the prison rebellion, is the same actor from "City of God" who worked on the bus and sought revenge against Li'l Zé.
Another notable reference occurs when Rocha arrives to seize control of the favela from the drug dealers. He utters the line, "Who said the community is yours?" This line is reminiscent of a scene in "City of God" where Li'l Zé takes over another drug dealer's territory, boldly declaring, "Who said the turf is yours?"

    Another interesting fact:
That militia chief (Rocha) got a lot of compliments for his role, but he got kinda affected by the character.. almost like Heath Ledger with the Joker.
One day he approched some cops, gave orders (to make a test if he would sound authentic), and they OBEY him.
He even had to go to therapy after the movie...

Something that no one seems to notice is that on the first film, at the funeral, Nascimento covers the Brazilian flag with BOPE's (as if they were superior to the law, to the curruption, and above all criticism, they were the good guys). In this movie, feeling distraught and powerless, is BOPE's flag that is covered by the Brazilian flag (curruption won when Mathias was brought in to BOPE by the people he despised the most and was betrayed, shot in the back, not dying the hero's death his friend had in the first movie). This detail gets me every time, I love the symbolism.

Another fan fact: the guy who played Major Rocha (Sandro Rocha), told that, to get the role, he really had to get into the character... and, during the auditions, the director called him and told him to really "dive in", or otherwise, he would'nt be considered. So, during the filming, he really SLAPPED the shit out of a woman during the action, and the director liked that! And that, folks, that's how he got this amazing role!

From action to horror, comedy and drama, Brazilian cinema is crossing borders and marking territory. City of Men is a slept on Brazilian film. It basically serves as a series finale in movie form depicting more innocent protaganists who get involved in difficult crime related situations in their Neighborhood. Kind of feels like the true sequel of City of God, but there's like 16 episodes of character development leading up to the movie. I saw the movie before the series and I really enjoyed it before and after seeing the series it was based on. One of the main characters played young Lil Ze and the other one played the role of 'Steak and Fries', the kid who was forced to shoot one of the runts under Lil Ze's command.

they had to put the warning at the start because the release in Brazil was kinda turbulent. The first movie actually got leaked while in editing, so a lot of us actually saw the pirated version of the movie before it actually got to theaters. The movie sometimes was sold as a documentary, as a leaked BOPE training video, etc. As because the actors were trained so well that they actually got out knowing more about combat than most police officers (an actual ex-BOPE officer was also involved in the production), when combined with the rawness of it, a lot of people believed it

Hey Octokrool, did you know that the director of the movie, José Padilha, is also the director of Robocop (2014)?

The EPs and the studio cut so much ideas... that he fuck the film.... so "he" says...
but I don't doubt it, Dark Water suppose to be another film and they fucked, Salles still kinda saves... by little.

a few things you guys may appreciate knowing.
    1. You are right about the disclaimer at the beginning, that movie hit way too close to reality, to the point where the director was receiving a lot of death threats by really powerfull people and had to leave Brazil (he currently lives in the US).
    2. The real life Nascimento is called Rodrigo Pimentel, the real life André Matias is called André Batista and the real life Fraga is called Marcelo Freixo. André is still alive, he said in a recent podcast that the character was killed in the movie because of problems with the actor`s manager. The only one who died in real life was that guy from the first movie who wasn`t named at the request of the family.
    3. The one lesson that those movies hammer on is that corruption is the true root of most of the problems in society. It is everywhere and has a life of its own. If threatened, it is willing to sacrifice it`s own hand in order to safe the arm. It`s a constant battle and like nascimento says in the first movie, you either surrender to it, hide and pretend not to notice or you go to war.

Fun fact: Originally, the idea was to make a trilogy but because the second movie portrayed so well the corrupt side of Rio de Janeiro and basically all Brazilian political staff, the director Jose Padilha started to get so many death threats, he gave up developing the third movie and went away from Brazil to live abroad.
