Splatter boxes are important for Big truck drivers. It's a very important safety device. Need to splatter on adjacent channels (all 40) because drivers will go up or down from 19 to chat then forget to go back to 19. Spatter can save lives. + it sounds rock n roll.
those R&R stickers that are on those radios are warranty stickers for the work they do to the radios. That place puts those stickers on the radios so they can tell if someone opened the radio after they worked on it and played around with anything inside. If something goes wrong with the radio and that sticker is messed up they won't honor their warranty and they will charge to have the radio fixed because the stickers were tampered with and the radio was opened up.
I'm a professional truck driver and have been running for the last two years a stock Stryker 955 with the resister removed for 11 meters and just love it. I'm using co-phased STR 10's antenna's with a real low SWR pumping out around 50 watts and the last thing I want is to turn down the power. Being a pro driver my radio is a lifesaver and I need trans and receive as far as I can. I guess if your just sitting at home talking poop 3 watts is just fine. One last thing why do people allow hacks to butcher there radios like these sent to you? Someone did this to one of mine I would be right in their face the next day.
The so called poop 3 watts doesn't make anyone mad on adjacent channels, and you need to increase from 3 W to 12 W just to increase 1 S unit, and even at that you won't get much more distance. What you will get, though, is someone getting mad enough and unuseable channels when you talk.
Mike, how to you connect the scope and spectrum analyzer to the RF out safely. Can't connect it directly. I would need something to handle up to up to 200 watts in most cases, and sometimes up to 1.5 KW for the linear.
Used to service many of these radios during the 70" & 80"s and always wondered how many Golden Screwdrivers will get into them after I fix them or how many were all ready in the radio before I got it.
35 years of office equipment repair all and I ever did was replace missing screws, springs, nuts, etc that other techs left off...never had to remove stuff...but did a lot of sighing myself...
Ther volting the rf amp section .known as negative power compression...its is trash..turns them in to box car makers ..i dont understand why anyone would do this ...just run a nice ab amp ..dont do this.... Negative power mod .. voltage push at rhe bias circuit
Speaking of those T&B tie straps, i worked for 7 years in electrical sales and I'll say 2 things about them, awesome and expensive LOL. Worth every penny IMO, only straps I've ever used.
So now you know EXACTLY how doctors feel when they fix up patients, tell them not to smoke, drink, or eat too much, and get them back after a year with the same old problems - caused by smoking, drinking to excess, and over-eating!
Actually rr-commuinations screwed up my Stryker radio more then it already was before I took it there, NEVER AGAIN will i make that MISTAKE!!!✍ THANK'S Mike for Showing What Real Radio men Should do, When repairing radios!!!☝️
Lesson .learned I suppose. A lot of cowboys out there, they should get back on their horse and (colorful) off! It's tempting to have the local guy look at a radio, but if there is not a lot of test equipment around they don't know what they are doing. Mind you the equipment might be for show anyway!
Make a data base in excel or even use quick books create a po # for each radio write the number in the chassis. Take digital photo with list of what was done and put in data base. If someone ever says you screwed it up you have proof of what you did and what someone else hacked. Just like car repair shop.
Hey Mike , Dustin at R&R Communications WAS (and maybe still is, its been years )a great tech . He did my first Ranger 2950 and my Connex 3300hp 10+ years ago and they are both still tight and right ! I think like a lot of shops , they have other techs doing "Dustins" work lol or Dustin really dropped his standards to accomodate the higher volume of customers . Now with all these radios coming up bad I just had to throw it out there . I cant confirm or deny my suspicions but I just wanted to let you know Dustin does have the ability to do great radio work if its still him in the shop its a shame his work is going down hill . People used to wait for long haul road trips just to drop off or pickup a "Dustin Tuned" radio believe it or not ! Im not promoting R&R or anything and I love watching your videos and just thought I could chime in with my personal expierences . Keep up the AWESOME high standards you always execute , I wish there were more techs like you to keep us all in DX Land buddy ! 73's Winkdogg 4-2-ZERO NJ

I remember the "Dustin" kit mod video done on that radio with the big black glob of whatever it was. What is a channel king? What does it do for the radio? More channels?
Mike in your professional experience what's the best lower cost SSB CB radio ? Thanks I already have a TRAM 3500 mag mount antenna (I need a mag mount for my situation).
If anyone here is also into "retro" gaming, you might understand why i feel this guy is to Dustin what Voultar is to Doujindance (Voultar repairs computers, Doujindance mods them with copious amounts of black goop)
Nice devices 👍🏻and because I wanted to ask so badly, I have an Electronica 360 and a Super Star 120 here and I'm looking for the circuit diagrams, and I can't find anything that can be deciphered :-(
Appreciate your good nature bud. Funny thing is, I saw those R&R stickers and wondered, boy that sounds familiar. Punched it in, yep, sure enough I was at their .com yesterday looking for something..... I think I was looking for President "Richard" radios and somehow google took me to them. Um Yeah. I'm NOT buying a President "Richard" from the place where "Dustin" works. That'd be a HELL NO. Nothing against "Dustin" but I want mine straight from President Electronics. Maybe Copper Electronics with NO MOD. Either myself and if I cannot handle it, then Chris@NomadRadio in Louisville. But it is good to see a good old fashioned "traditionally trained tech" LOL Not a "Harry Potter" trained tech. LMAO But yeah, the more common sense you talk the more I trust you. I think that's how it works anyway. Hahahahhaa Great videos.
@@mikesradiorepair I have no doubt their heart is in the right place. Perhaps he's seen a cabinet short and he's trying to prevent another one. Whatever the case, I'm sure he/they are acting in good faith trying to improve their customers gear. I do not mean to rag on ANYONE especially someone who is doing what they believe to be preserving activities to the equipment. Oops.
@@mikesradiorepair But it's just not the kind of place that I would send my radios to. There's just no way to say that and make it look nice. No way. It is what it is.
At 07:51, if you had put a sticker on the radio, you would have remembered doing the alignment, but, if the customer removed the sticker, would you have forgotten? 🤔
I've seen radios with initials, date of repair, and once even a phone number etched onto the inside of the bottom cover. I've also seen them with a sticker label like from an old floppy diskette with the same info. I am a fan of the label sticker on the inside with the info of what was done and when.
I have a question of curiosity for you Mike. How many "D.B's" of loss in output are you able to confirm through your scope when using a 90° RF connector and all other connectors in unison with the signal sampler then terminated at the 50 ohm load when hooked up to your scope?. I do know when testing VHF/UHF equipment, each added coupler from transceiver output to antenna/load input, approximately .5 D.B. loss is recordable. Understanding the fact that your currently testing low frequency equipment A.M. etc...such low values of loss is not a "do or die", do you factor in the loss and compensate when doing power adjustments or alignments, or is the subject not necessary when tuning AM equipment???. I was just curious, I personally don't do such testing/alignments on VHF/UHF but, when fabricating antennas, coax runs etc..I usually factor in those losses Thanks for sharing (S.K. and 73)
I normalize my system with all cables and adapters hooked up. Same as when I'm monitoring on the scope and spectrum analyzer. I have a stored calibration table for that setup which consist of a Bird directional coupler, 3db splitter/combiner, attenuators and of course the cables. Most modern instruments have the ability to store user calibration tables. So no matter how many samplers, cables, attenuators and adapters you attach you just store the "loss" that it adds and the instrument accounts for that when it displays the measurement.
@@mikesradiorepair: Thank you for your time in response. I guess that sums it all up in a nutshell, makes perfect sense. Like I stated I'am not super keen when it comes to alignments, repairs and such although I do enjoy antenna design and tuning. Another question for you, do you have a website for service contact?, I have a Yeasu FT-101E which I'am sure your familiar with it is a vacuum tube transceiver using (two 6JS6C) tubes for finals, a very mechanical rig I have owned for many years with great success but it's drifting more and more by the day. By chance do you do alignments, re-caps and tune ups on those particular Tranceivers, if so would you have a contact?. Kind regards, Eric Dee.
R&R. Ughhh! I've heard locals bragging about Dustin over @ R&R. Bragging about how great his mods are, only to have to ask them to repeat exactly what R&R (Dustin) did because, I couldn't understand their first transmission (modulation). LOL
I'm going to come out with my own modification name it's called a banana modification I'll put a banana in the radio and call it A triple banana modification I could guarantee you I'll get a customer
Why would someone do those things to the Stryker 955 those radios have plenty of output power and DON'T need a Dustins mod whatever the heck that is. I am sure that radio ran better as the stock radio over the Dustin Downgrade and that is what it is a downgrade. You are ruining a good radio.
