Williams not playing Ivey more earlier in the year due to defensive concerns always baffled me. It’s not like the rest of the team was a stellar defensive unit 😂
It's tough with owners. If they think they know a lot about basketball, they tend to hire GMs they can manipulate. That takes them into Jerry Jones territory, where they're the shadow GM, paying a guy for a year to ignore his advice. If they know they're really just casual fans with a lot of money, they tend to look for "a basketball man" for their GM. That can be construed to be humility on the part of a billionaire, which is good, but if they screw up on their GM pick, they're going to be talked into writing huge checks for horrible contracts for "can't miss" free agents who...miss. Also, basketball owners are uniformly really rich, and they didn't get that way by being passive. They got that way by knowing when to act, that fortune favors the bold, and strong action may look like recklessness to some, but when it works out it looks like genius. They also got that way by listening to their advisors. But an NBA team is not an industrial process. Players aren't innovative ways of creating a good or service. They're just guys, and no matter how much people love talking about analytics, the one thing that drives them is emotion. So, when the demand comes from everywhere, fans, the coach, the GM, to "do something," an owner actually thinks he has to do something. And that's how they got rich, by doing the right thing at the right time. But what if the answer is really "don't do anything?" What if you have a core of good players who have gone through the tribulations of losing and feel like comrades in arms? What if the answer is to say to the team, to the coach, to the city, "These are my guys. We're going to win with them?" It's possible, no? You can prune the malcontents, maybe pick up someone as a midlevel exception or an expiring, but going all in is not always the answer. Phoenix went all in. They got broomed in the first round and they have no draft picks until two elections from now. The Rudy Gobert trade seems like a good idea now, but what if Denver wins the series? You mortgaged your future for a playoff win and some fleeting hopes. Bottom line: an owner should know when to do nothing and have the balls to make that decision. Few do.
The GM and coach have had 1 year respectively.....right? Give it time. Honestly team could use more fuctional vets and maybe idk to not absolutely get screwed by the draft lotto. Like can someone do the math for them to hit 5 for 3 years on a row despite having the best odds at #1.
As a Knicks fan, it’s been a joy to see them go from NBA hell, to bringing in a competent front office (who had a vision), bringing in a coach who is in line with that vision, and then making moves and bringing in players who fit the vision too. Leon Rose and World Wide Wes deserve a ton of praise
Totally. I love that they did it without bringing in a "star". Randle and Brunson were definitely not highly sought after free agents, but they've really developed into great players as knicks. They're such a likable team. Hoping they find a way to trade for Mikal Bridges in the offseason.
The Bulls are definitely in basketball hell, we had 18+ months of below .500 basketball, without making a single move to help us succeed or rebuild, it also took forever for the GM to realize that he maybe shouldnt wait on Lonzo Ball, who couldnt walk without pain a year ago, to come back and be the same player to help lead the team back to the first seed (where we had 2 wins against teams above .500) It's not Hornets level of hell, but holyyyy the level of idiocy is definitely Hornets level

Even if they do take a great talent if they give that talent trash coaching and make terrible trade decisions its still going to be hard to make it out of NBA hell. But for someone reason these new players get blamed for their teams continuous failures instead of the bad owners, gms and coaches

As a Bulls fan, the 1st year with DeMar/Zach/Lonzo/Caruso/Vuc was great. First seed in the East at the All Star break even tho our record against top teams wasn't good. But really a combination of injury prone players getting injured (Zach/Lonzo) and Vuc regressing really hurt us. And until Coby White this year (who was robbed of MIP imo, Maxey was already good last year), our lottery picks ultimately didn't step up into that "good, consistent starter" role and we just suffered.
Great video! How would you explain the draft success of the OKC Thunder under Sam Presti? Would it be explained more by the quality of the players themselves (like they really draft/scout well) or would it. be explained by the pieces around those players that help them develop? Or a combo of the two? Curious to hear what you think
One thing I’m wondering though is how this applies to college sports? Bc that’s still a business but you also have to deal with recruiting and NCAA guidelines which is unique in sports

The Pistons have had the least wins of any NBA team in the last decade. The Red Wings have had the least wins of any NHL teams in the last decade. The Tigers have had the 2nd least wins of any MLB team in the last decade. The Lions have had the 10th least wins of any NFL team in the last decade.
