- Former President Donald Trump has secured enough delegates to seal the Republican presidential nomination, NBC News projects, setting up a 2024 rematch with President Joe Biden, who NBC News projected earlier Tuesday night has clinched the Democratic nomination. Steve Kornacki maps the road to 270.

It's a knife's edge fo viability the closer you get tot he election because voters are not long minded, they only think about the present or the short term past, so whatever will sway the vote is going to be what's going on in August, September, and October.

If Biden loses the upcoming election, a massive reason why will be exactly this. The message probably works well with never-Republicans, but it completely turns off independents
Clearly one side has more merit in saying that:
-Trump incited Jan 6 by claiming that he won, aiming to discredit our entire democratic system
- Trump is backed by Project 2025 ("Established in 2022, the project seeks to recruit tens of thousands of conservatives to Washington, D.C., to replace existing federal civil service workers it characterizes as the "deep state", to further the objectives of the next Republican president. The plan would perform a swift takeover of the entire executive branch under a maximalist version of the unitary executive theory")
- Trump asked why he couldn't just shoot protesters in the legs during BLM
- Trump has literally said he wants to be a dictator for one day
- Trump's defense team claimed that he was theoretically immune to federal criminal prosecution, even for the "murder of political rivals"
- Trump bases his entire campaign around "retribution"
When one of the candidates is literally arguing in court for the president to have immunity from all criminal prosecution, the comparison to a tyrant becomes apt.

@@pandaman1968 - we're not in those founding fathers' times, though. This country grew very large and got MILLIONS of people. Even the smaller by population states should count enough.
If the popular vote takes precedence then the election will be decided by NYC and Chicago, and everybody else’s vote wont matter.
Your vote counts, in your state. People don't vote for the President. States vote for the President. It's been that way since the very first vote. That gives each state closer to equal power, although larger states like California and Texas who have a bigger population still get more vote power. We are the United STATES of America. Each state is still separate when it comes to federal. That's why each state is allowed to make a lot of their own laws. Separate but united. Early Polling has actually been significantly more accurate if you look at just the last 2 or 3 elections compared to say the last 8 or 10 election. In 2020 early polling was actually closer to the final result than later polling. I don't think people should put too much stock in polls at any point in the cycle, that being said, given increased polarization and the fact that it's a rematch election between two tested candidates, there are reasons to believe early polls will be a more accurate predictor this cycle than any other in recent history.
Ohio has a Senate race and North Carolina a Governor's race which might further drive turnout.
Oh yeah... Ohioans can't wait to re-elect ole rumpled suit Sherrod Brown (who talks like he just got done working at assembly line... rather than being a Blue rubber stamp in the US senate for 18 years)
Nevada will certainly be a key battleground state this year. Nebraska's 2nd District, and states like Minnesota, New Hampshire and Maine at large could possibly be contested.
I live right across the border in MA and my bro lives in NH. I..... really doubt that NH has much of a red streak left in it. It's surrounded by blue states that just got more and more blue and people slowly trickle over to NH. Maine has a similar problem, but fewer people move up that way. Most people don't like the "frozen north" of Maine which is almost uninhabited lol Personally, I think it's nice and calm.
Anyhow, I don't think those two are really in play this time, though I wouldn't mind seeing it. Nevada is definitely in play, but its low electoral count doesn't really make it very important. Pretty sure when I looked there was only 1 combination of battleground states where having Nevada would make a difference. Think Georgia, Michigan & Nevada was the combo, but I feel like if Michigan went Red, I think either PA or WI would as well.......
I suppose you could also cross that 270 with a Georgia, Wisconsin, Nevada, New Hampshire combo... or a Georgia, Wisconsin, Nevada, Maine combo would get you to a 269 tie and Republicans would appoint a Republican president.. but I see these as very unlikely outcomes...
Again, a nice to have though.. A Red presidential win in any state would also bode well for down ballot candidates and that's almost as important as the presidency.
Trump is leading by 5 points...

Our founding fathers were wise when they came up with the electoral college. We should never change it.
Election night will be the 2nd time in my life ive watched msnbc since election night 2016.
Read the history of the implementation of the electoral system. There was a lot of debates about what to implement, and it was supposed to only be temporary.
They were expecting the government to figure out a proper system, not keep the electoral system.
They also expected the US Constitution to be revisited constantly, and have rewrites every 20 years to keep up with societal changes and fix issues found.
Politicians have failed to uphold the founders vision of an ever evolving democracy.
The House of Representatives (and therefore Electoral College, since it's just # of House Representatives + # of Senators + 3 votes for Washington DC) was set up to grow every 10 years following the Census. And it did. Until about a century ago when Congress broke it with the Reapportionment Act of 1929 that artificially froze the House at its current size that aligns with the US Census population from friggin' 1910! On top of that, there is actually an unratified Amendment to the Constitution written up by James Madison himself (just look up "Madison Apportionment Amendment") that would have set up a formula for exactly how to grow the House (and therefore Electoral College) according to a square root rule. Unfortunately that would have created a House size of over 1000 members, but using a Cube Root Rule we would get a much more manageable House size of 692 members (and then 692 House Reps + 100 Senators + 3 votes for DC = 795 Electoral College votes). We'd be much less concerned about Wyoming or Delawara or Vermont or Alaska getting their Constitutionally-guaranteed 3 EC votes (from bare minimum of 1 House Representative + 2 Senators = 3 EC votes) if all of the larger states we allocated their Representatives and EC votes according to the 2020 Census and not the 1910 Cenaus.
@@t.j.3101 The only problem with the 2020 and some of these later Censuses is that the government is including the illegal immigrants in the numbers for actual voters. So this would increase the EC votes from California, NY and Illinois by at least an extra 13.
I would like the Popular Vote interstate compact to pass before the election.
To end the Electoral College it would take 37 of our 50 states voting in favor of that outcome - 3/4 of the states in support because the Framers wanted it to be very difficult to make changes to the Constitution that would not be highly popular across the nation. And today there are too many of the smaller populated states that get extra presidential electoral influence than their population would otherwise possess without the institution's continuation - & beyond that, conservative leaning states support the EC because without it, the GOP winning Presidential contests would be very problematic. So, as of now & for the foreseeable future, despite your point of view, there is no chance the EC will be ended legally.
@@t.j.3101 The House is hardly manageable now.
With a population of nearly 700, I can only imagine the chaos that place would be.
Plus, more members means less power for the 435 that are there today.

Biden’s the worst president we ever had!
Vote for Biden poor memory
I don't like Trump, but he has my vote. I've never been this broke before. Last year I had the worst year thanks to Biden handling the economy and supply chain. I literally had no money for food, and almost lost everything. All because my semi truck took 5 months to get fixed and 15000. A 60 dollar part in national backorder. Skelpers asking 2k for them. Would of bought it, but the shop said it wouldn't warranty the 15k job if I used own parts
Why would I vote for someone that can’t remember how to get off a stage or how to walk up a flight of stairs. This is elder abuse the White House handlers need to be in jail

Voting is like driving a car. Select D to go forward, select R to go backwards
Actually vice versa
@South-of-the-BorderHave you ever seen an automatic transmission car? D for Drive (forwards), R for Reverse. Hugh_Bleffner is right, and while I've seen cars with different transmission for downwards and rising, they don't use D and R, because that would be stupid.
Going in reverse is good when you're headed for a cliff
Going in reverse is great for inflation

I remember when I had my first beer
I'll bet money that Minnesota goes red this year. Wisconsin is easily going republican and Iowa is double digit republican. Minnesota (the only blue of the Reagan 84 sweep) is going republican.
At this point any state could turn red
The rematch nobody wanted
There is no reason for the electoral college to have this winner takes the whole state situation. It just disenfranchises up to 49% of voters in any give state.
There aren't red and blue states, there are every shade of purple states. If every state apportioned their share of electoral votes out to represent what percentage of their voters chose a certain candidate, there wouldn't be all the power places in certain locations. California would have a few votes got red, New York would have a few go blue, and the whole presidency wouldn't hinge on 500 people in Florida or 5000 in Georgia.
That's why the house of representatives exists....
Not me. Otherwise, cities would determine every national election. The population of Los Angeles is greater than that of 40 individual states.
I am glad we have the electoral college. I don't want the corruption in Gavin Newsome's California to control every presidential election. The Founders sure as heck knew what they were doing.
@@MyDyerMaker So why do you think that a person that lives in a rural area should have their vote worth more than someone who lives in a city?
@@CannibalShinobi They don't. I believe in a representative republic as the founding fathers wisely designed. That's why we have states and representatives. We weren't meant to have a few cities rule over entire states. That's also why abortion was returned to the states- so the people of each state could decide their laws, as the Constitution prescribes.
These people are really insane !,
Last election we had more votes than registered voters.
Pls vote wisely, americans.
Yes choose Americans over illegals
I live for the day I see my home state of Texas reflected in a lovely shade of blue. Been trying for 40+ years and will never stop!
If Dems don't want Trump in the WH, they should hold their noses and vote for Kennedy. Period.
Georgia, Arizona, wisconsin, pennsylvania, michigan.
These five states will be most important to democrats.
And North Carolina that’s another big state with lots of people
It would be really nice if we could go to a constitutional amendment to have all states allocate their electoral college votes proportionally according to the popular vote in their state. There are so many disenfranchised voters on both sides that suffer. If you're in a deep red or blue state, the candidates have little motivation to visit you, talk to you, consider your position, etc... That one change alone would essentially destroy the concept of "battleground states". It'd be good even for those deep red/blue states in other ways: local governors and legislators would know that if they went too far either way that their voters could still frustrate their efforts by voting for a president that was a check and balance against any extreme views.
(I'm not from the states) I find it so weird that they aren't proportioned (in most states) instead of the all or nothing approach
A quicker, more practical solution (that wouldn't require a Constitutional Amendment) is to repeal the Reapportionment Act of 1929 that artificially capped the House at 435 members (and therefore the Electoral College at 435 House Reps + 100 Senators + 3 votes for Washington DC = 538 Electoral College votes)--based on the Census Population from 1910. This would bring each state's number of Representatives in Congress AND Electoral College vote counts in line with their 2020 Census populations.
Literally look at the size of the House and the size of the Electoral College in each decade before 1910. It used to grow with the times (and as time progresses, it should be weighed more and more towards the popular vote since House size keeps increasing while Senate size stays the same). Now we have a broken system that introduced artificial scarcity into the equation, such that a state that grew in population in a particular decade can still lose seats simply because it grew slower than another state.
The person with the most votes in a state wins the states electoral votes.
Maine and Nebraska have something like what you said. Whoever wins the statewide vote in either of those states, wins the majority of the states electoral votes. However, the electoral votes are allocated by Congressional district. Meaning: a candidate may lose the statewide vote, but if he/she carries even one CD, they get an electoral vote. Also, I'd like to see either ranked-choice voting for President or a runoff, if no candidate gets a majority on Election Day. That would eliminate the fear of throwing away a vote.
It has the benefit of forcing candidates to try and pursue moderate policies to appeal to the moderate swing voters in the battle ground states. We are polarized enough as is, the last thing you want is someone running hard to either extreme just to get their base out and overwhelm the popular vote totals.
I think north carolina's in play but I think texas is at least as much in play.
So is Alabama
@@james-rd4dq If I am thinking about states in that area after georgia and north carolina and texas, All of mississippi louisiana and south carolina are in my head ahead of alabama.
