    In Reverie is a crazy story. I loved this band, then didn't like the album when it came out because it was different, and his voice sounded different.
    A few years after it came out, I fell in love with it, and I still listen to it at least once a month, 15 years later.

    This documentary has helped me so many times since it came out. I'm twice an ex drug abuser and a lifelong addict, but now an addict in recovery, and anytime it's ever gotten bad on either side of the sobriety fence I watch this, and I feel not alone. Saves the Day is one of the all time greatest bands of our generation. I'm about to turn 24, and it took a while to realize why I needed to be clean, and this video talks about those reasons, even if they aren't necessarily about getting clean, the feeling of happiness and peace is something everyone chases. "So you lost your way, that's okay."

    I've liked this band for roughly 5 years now--starting in 8th grade and now I'm about to graduate. Saves the Day has guided me along in my teenage angst and pain and anger and hatred and loneliness and sadness with their music and lyrics, and has helped me through every shitty thing that has ever happened to me. I relate to their lyrics more than any other band. I met Chris once. I wish I could have talked to him longer. After watching this documentary, the band means more to me than ever.

    I think it's more along the lines of how Rivers Cuomo got when Pinkerton got such brash reviews. Essentially it comes down to pouring your heart and feelings into something only to be given the idea that your feelings are wrong and worth absolutely nothing. It's a tough experience that not many go through.

    I can't believe it's taken so long for myself to come across this documentary, but the timing is perfect. I understand everything and I can very well relate to this and where you want everything to "just stop". I had failed at that attempt recently, and thank fucking God I had found this. It's given me so much to look forward to and channel it into music that I've been writing since I was 18.
    Chris Conley, thank you.

Just like the music of Saves the Day, it's helped me through dark times and helped me find inspiration, both as a songwriter and someone who suffers from depression. Thank you, Chris, for your boldness in standing up and speaking out and furthering the dialogue about mental health awareness, both here and in your music :)

    I fell in love with Saves The Day when I put on the headphones at the listening station at Hot Topic in Albq. to hear this new release of an album Through Being Cool.... and "this guy" was saying all the things that I felt and it sounded so good. I got it. A few months later they were playing a show in El Paso. They had just been in the van wreck and I couldn't believe they were on stage totally busted up & playing their hearts out! Saves The Day's evolution astounds me with every album...

You described exactly what it feels like to be in such a dark place that it feels like there is no way out but to find a way to make everything end. You've given me hope that there is a way out of this feeling and it can change. Thanks Chris you may have just saved a life.

    There was a somewhat recent podcast with original drummer Bryan Newman. He had some good things to say and it was interesting but one thing he said that made no sense was: “Saves The Day has been a slow motion car wreck since I left.” It came off like he was a little jealous that the band still exists when he probably thought it was going to fizzle out soon after he left. From what he said, his choice to leave 20 years ago seems like it was made out of fear of not making it in the industry so he took a safer route. I guess the professional musician life isn’t for everybody so in the end I really can’t criticize his choice to leave. What he’s missing though is that everyone who has played in this band has contributed something meaningful, especially Arun and Rodrigo who’ve become the backbone of the band over the past 12 years. Both solid musicians who play the old songs how they’re supposed to be played and have also created a ton of great new songs. The Grapefruit album is an underrated gem. In my opinion I think every album they’ve released is great in its own certain way.

    • @countaplay6749
      @countaplay6749 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a fan of theirs since really Can't Slow Down/Through Being Cool, I'll just say the band really did take a turn when Bryan left (after SWYA). He wasn't technically very good at drums per se, but when he left the wholesomeness of the band went with him. The songs captured the spirit and energy of what it was like to be young at that time better than any band in the scene. I'm not saying their newer stuff isn't good, or the new members aren't great (they are) but when the old songs just hit different. I think Bryan, Ted, David, and Eben were every bit as instrumental in that as Chris.

    • @cb24203
      @cb24203 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@countaplay6749 I disagree that Bryan isn’t that technically good at drums. In my opinion he’s a great drummer and plays with a swing that a lot of other drummers lack. His compositions and performances on both TBC and SWYA sound like someone who’s been playing and touring for 25 years when at the time he was still really young. The drummers they’ve had since Bryan all have had different styles but all have fit in good. Since the beginning this band has always been in constant flux. I think Bryan’s drumming was important early on in establishing the band’s sound but I don’t see Eben and Ted really having a huge influence on the band. I could be wrong but I just don’t see it. I don’t think the albums would have sounded that much different had it been other people playing bass and rhythm guitar. It was Chris writing the lyrics and alot of the guitar riffs and those guys were only in the band for a very short time. David is the most important member aside from Chris. When he left the band lost a bit of magic but after seeing them a bunch of times over the past 10 years with the most recent members I’ve realized it’s the songs that are important and every person who’s been in the band has done a good job performing them. Just my opinion tho.

    • @cb24203
      @cb24203 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@countaplay6749 also, it almost sounds like you were into the band 20 years ago and then didn’t pay attention to any of the albums after SWYA. When People only love those early albums usually it’s because they were young at the time and it’s sentimental. A lot of people grew out of the phase while Saves The Day continued releasing albums. So when those people go back now and listen to the albums that came after SWYA there’s no connection to the music. I’ve listened since the beginning so all of the albums are sentimental to me in some way. They all remind me of what I was doing at the time and who I was with. This may not be the case with you but it’s something I’ve noticed in general. The Grapefruit album is a hidden gem.

    • @countaplay6749
      @countaplay6749 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cb24203 I'm almost positive there are interviews that mentioned Bryan struggling to track drums or play live. I'd have to dig, it's been a while. Doesn't matter though because he was a good drummer. And Eben was probably the most technically talented player in the band, and hugely influential in the music. His bass lines in SWYA and In Reverie are next level. But more importantly, the band wrote their best (I'd say - certainly their most far-reaching/popular) music during that time. Yes Chris wrote the lyrics and did the lion's share of the writing, but those members definitely helped, Dave/Eben particularly. Their live shows were insane too. There's one on TH-cam where they play the Palladium and I wish I could've been there. Subsequent songs and iterations I'm sure are great, but songs I'll listen to songs like Always Ten Feet Tall, You Vandal, Freakish, and those songs are still great and just hit different.

    • @cb24203
      @cb24203 ปีที่แล้ว

      So because some random interview 20 years ago said he struggled he shouldn’t be considered great drummer? Lmao. All anyone needs to do is listen to the recordings. He was better and more creative than most his age at the time. The playing on TBC and SWYA isn’t just a guy beating on some drums following the band. All of his drums parts are composed, purposeful and tasteful. Eben is an amazing bass player but if you replaced him the songs wouldn’t have sounded that much different in my opinion. He’s great but he doesn’t anchor the band or define their sound at all. It’s just getting really old hearing people say how the new music isn’t as good as TBC and SWYA. It is, people just aren’t paying attention and don’t have the same sentimental connection. It was a fun time and people will always remember the TBC lineup of guys but the band has continued a long time without them and is still great in my opinion. If there’s anyone who should be remembered for his importance it’s Sean McGrath. Had a huge influence on the band and If it wasn’t for him there would be no Saves The Day.
