This opera is a bit like Turandot with a rather ruthless beautiful woman!! The Queen, by the way, is opera's version of Mae West--so watch out!! She means trouble. She sings wonderfully--but the costume is not Oriental enough. Should be more slinky and dangerous as a metaphor of her character.
I learned & sang this aria when I was still, a vocal training 6th grade student. It was so challenging & so hard to sing but it was a "heavenly" experiance, which I owe to my dear voice training teacher, Mrs.Jeanette Kouyoumjian Ilanjian(in 1974, Beirut, Lebanon)
My mother sang this years ago in NYC with an opera company called "The Art of Musical Russia". She was a colortura soprano.At that time she met ..Rachmaninoff, Stavinsky and several Russian musicians who had fled hard times in Russia. Her stories about these people were just amazing. What a great last flowering of genius this was...and to be part of that was remarkable for her.
It's clear that Rossignol (Соловей) by Stravinsky is taken COMPLETELY out of here! This is rather amazing. This aria is the first aria of the Nightingale in Stravinsky 's opus.
The only full version of this opera on TH-cam is a Russian spaghetti western. This one by Kent Nagano et al must be the best one. But I dont find it on TH-cam. Too bad.
@sirmercutio99 - i was not suggesting that she could, or could not - as much as i know, you may not like Damrau just as I don't like Dessay ... i like this aria too, like R-K's music ; this is the first time i heard Trifonova, and i think i like her too - she seems to be an amazing singer (this is in 'my favourites') - there is no point (seems even inappropriate) to argue about other singers... i apologise for my reply - i should know better and be able to resist urges to rumble on...
@sirmercutio99 i doubt (not that i would like to even imagine Dessay trying to sing anything like this) - this is just too difficult - much more so then in Puccini (not to mention other comp.), singers are meant to actually make the musical lines themselves (by singing the right words on the most exact notes) - plenty of my musician friends say "oh i just hate it" ... besides musical difficulties, this opera is too complicated in other ways - makes it 'infeasible' in nowadays terms - a shame

Rimsky wrote as a riposte to his having been dismissed from the St Petersburg conservatory for speaking on the behalf of students during the failed 1905 revolution. He was Professor of orchestration. He was was reinstated by Glazunov but it left Rimsky-Korsakov upset till his death in 1908.
What the singers of today have to put up with. She not only has to contend with the very difficult music, but an unwieldy costume, platform shoes and too many steps. I think she does very well considering the obstacles.
