    I have the book in my hands. He says to keep that can in the compete kit. The personal kit is stuff kept on your person like lighters, belt knives, flint on cordage. He talks about that coffee can trick as a way to make more room in your pack and max items.

  • @MuskratJim
    @MuskratJim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for showing all the details of Les Stroud’s personal survival kit.I agree, the 5-lbs coffee can is not something you’d carry on your body every time you leave your house, unless you ALWAYS sling a bag over your shoulder. I carry a belt pouch with necessities and carry a metal water bottle.

    • @RevanJJ
      @RevanJJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Jim! Reading the book right now. He got confused. The can is supposed to be in the complete to save room in your pack or whatever your carrying on a hike. He goes out of his way to never say carry anything extraneous. I’d recommend reading it because I feel like this was an honest try, but not accurate to the book that I’m holding right now. It even says to make sure to personalize it to yourself and to your area/needs.

      Hi 👋
      I agree. The small items are to be on the body. Your pockets/clothing or on a lanyard around the neck. The coffee can and cup in your backpack or maybe a pouch on your belt. A bit of common sense is required here👍

  • @jeanscott9327
    @jeanscott9327 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    You need to read this book again. He does recommend a coffee can for a survival kit however, in the book he says this list is stuff to carry on you. At all times, in pockets, on a lanyard around your neck, or on a belt. This is not the list, for the stuff you put in a coffee can. Or a fanny pack. In the book he states, that a fanny pack can be left behind, but pockets never are. Pages 19, 20, and 21of the book.

    • @juandemarko8348
      @juandemarko8348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes carry all small items in pockets or belts pouches and keep your coffee can to carry hot coals and boil water.

    • @RevanJJ
      @RevanJJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have it in my hands right now and it’s like he reversed the instructions or something. He definitely got personal and compete confused.

    I drink alot of coffee and I can tell you that's not a 5lb coffee can. Good video and great advise. Self reliance store and 4 dog stove company both have pots that are inspired by Mors Kochanski. I'm sure Les would approve.

      i have a couple of old hills bros 5 lb coffee cans filled with misc junk so i checked and my 4" dia nesting cup fits fine. having said that it wouldn't be my first choice as a survival kit container. in the old days though coffee cans had a variety of uses, including baking bread in, 100% steel, food safe, downside being eventual rust. with regards to the can pa used it has a peculiar looking lip, maybe that was the problem? don't know anything about les stroud, but if nothing else i'll purchase his book. thanks for the vid bro!

    I read both the SAS Handbook and Les Stroud's "Survive"- the checklist is what I based my personal survival kit on. I highly recommend getting his book. It's practical and tested. Stroud also recommends to build your own and not get the store bought type. The answer to the cup issue is to buy a steel cup that the 5 pound coffee can fits into. One can also wrap a high quality duct tape around the can as well as paracord, or my favorite- number 12 bank line. Once the kit is exercised a lot of the stuff can go into pockets and redistributed . . . you'll need to anyway if you're going to boil up water in the coffee can. I also punched two small holes at the top of the container and put in a small length of wire to serve as a handle. The system can be waterproofed by wrapping electrical tape around the lid onto the can. It keeps the lid on, and because of the holes I punched at the top, waterproofed.

    • @margaretadler6162
      @margaretadler6162 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you wrap duct tape around the coffee can you'll have to peel it off to use the can as vessel for boiling water or for cooking! Its better to just carry a 1in. Wide roll of gorilla tape in your pocket or a few feet wrapped around an old credit card or around a bic light (s)

    That looks like a two pound coffee tin instead of five pound like you recommended at the beginning of the video. Maybe that's why you couldn't get everything into it. A five pound tin would be too big anyway.

      Nah, I tried. My piggy bank is in a similar can and I just tried to put it into my old GSI camp cup but it wouldn't fit. No way, no how. Possibly if you shaved the inner lip off of the coffee can you 'may' be able to fit the cup but 1) thats a lot of annoying work, 2) if you mess it up the lid won't seal anymore & 3) if something like that was necessary I think it would have been mentioned in the book anyway.

    Not a 5 lb. can you have there I think . It may seem like a large container for a personal kit but I think it's maybe intended for more of a trekking / woodsman type of deal , much like Mors Kochankis' (spll?) recommended personal kit that he puts in a bushpot that is similar to a 5lb.can size . Good video ! Thanks !

    Your can is like a razor blade. Use a can opener to open your can. Starfrit makes one that cuts right around the edge leaving it smooth. Plus your available opening would be the same as the can.

    I think you said 5 lb. coffee can a couple of times. Unless I am mistaken the can you show is a one pound can. These are difficult to find in the stores in my area. Most coffee companies who market in my area have switched to a plastic container and most have gone to a size which is smaller than one full pound. with my average sized hands I need two hands to pick up a five pounder.

    • @Adventuresonabudget67
      @Adventuresonabudget67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Les suggests a coffee can and has said on his show that it is what he first used. Basically the can/pot/whatever is so you can boil water. He actually suggests stashing most things on you (pockets, etc) in case you get separated from your pack.
      The book and Les himself (his YT video on survival kits is great) suggests carrying what you are able on your person and adapting to your needs.

    You can cut that ring out of the can with a standard can opener. But the Ozark cup handles still prevent it from fitting. However you should cut the ring out anyway for full use of the opening and for sanitation reasons. Another cheap use for the can is to empty it and put an old Gatoraid liter jug in it, slide a freebee plastic spoon down the side. Store the plastic lid on the bottom and shove it all in the leg of your girls old pantie hose. All fits together nicely. Now you can filter water, boil water and store water as well as cook and eat food out of it. A cheap canteen/cook kit.

    Well, I'm coming back to this one well after I initially watched it. I like to revisit older videos, and to explain why I'll start with an old joke. A has dropped his son off at school after spring break and sees his old economics professor. He comes up to him and says, hey I my son took the same test you have me 20 years ago! Why are you still using the same test? The professor says, yes the questions are the same but the answers are all different now! That's kind of the way I try to look at skills. The questions we deal with in survival are the same as they were decades or even thousands of years ago, but some of the answers are different.
    Skills are lighter than gear or so I'm told. But as I learn more it seems like I carry more gear! Partly it's because I may not be an expert but I can see how little I used to know. So many of the kit videos on youtube are young fellas with the Altoids tins saying, this covers this C, this covers that one, etc. But I have had to use my kit and I would say anyone who ever has can think of lots of things they wish they'd have had that didn't fit in a little kit! I came through it with a pretty decent kit afterward I tossed some stuff all the "experts" suggest and add things that experience showed me I needed.
    Good stuff, PAoutdoors! I have been subbed for years, love the content.

    You might want a redundant fire starting source if you want more than one fire, same with lights, do you read at night at all or anything? The space blanket's for warmth, altho I did see Les use one as part of a shelter once. Of course an orange garbage bag can get you found by air rescue. I wonder if it's assumed your wearing at least a backpack if your going camping or hiking, for carrying some food, water and oh, maybe.. a survival kit.

      Les Stroud has publicly admitted that he does indeed live and film himself without any outside help from anyone.
      While this is 100% accurate and true he also has a panic button that will reach a base camp that is approximately 5 miles from him that have survival experts and Navy SEALS that will come and rescue him should his life be in danger.
      He is still a GREAT Survivalist but these TV Shows have to have insurance policies , Like these rescue teams, to be able to allow the airing of the Show.

    As a starter kit, I can see where it might be of value. Once you begin to practice you natural find out what works and what doesn't. Someone who already has bushcraft skills probably would have better equipment. And naturally it gets more expensive too. Aside frome the Leatherman this while kit, is what, under $20.

    Les's list is a good one, but it's a general generic kit that needs tweaking according to wherever you expect to use it.

    A number #10 can would be more appropriate. It would then fit all those item mentioned with room to spare.

    That magnesium bar if it is the same one that walmart sells is a dud, I even drilled it to make mag dust and there is something wrong with it. Since I had problems with it I am going to get a regular ferro rod from amazon hopefully I dont get duped on it too.

      @PAoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Criminal Justice It is a walmart one and I agree the are not good. The only one I've found that work well is made by the Doan company. As far as Ferro rods get one from 4 Directions Bushcraft or Bayite. The both work great! Thanks for watching.

    The can is supposed to go in your bag, not your pocket.
    If your smart, you duplicate the knife, lighter, matches, ziploc, 550 cord, trash bag and some puritabs and put them in your pockets.

      I’m reading the book right now and it’s like he skipped it or mixed it up or misrepresented it on purpose. He clearly says the can is for a pack and to personalize things to your liking and for your area and plans. I’m right on that page now. The kit guide is more ideas than a “you must have this by this brand” Etc guide. Not sure how he got this so wrong when this boom is so plainly laid out.

    I Have been a camper for years and I have watched a lot shows, read books, heard a lot advice and I think les is cool af. All his advice isn't bad advice in fact I would say all the survival advice I have heard from him is true. yeah he might believe in bigfoot, but who cares. After reading his book he is one of the few people who really got me interested in camping. It does need a fishing kit though.

    First its not a 5 lb can that's a 2 lb can and that's why you didn't have room for some of his recommendations.
    Also why do a Les Stroud survival kit when you change things just because you made a video without bothering to get what was recommended. If you are going to do something do it right

  • @robbabcock_
    @robbabcock_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Les is assuming that you've studied/have some skills. Your kit doesn't look great but you 'cheated' and some of the items fall short of his recommendations. Still, as you say, even the kit shown would be good in a pinch.

    Hi, I see that this video is an old one. Do you have an update? Here's some hints for your futur update. !st - The Carry- Where do you usually carry your cup? You can carry it in your backpack, Havresack, Mail bag, purse, grocery bag, etc. 2nd - Items - The items can be added inside a 750ml GSI Glacier cup (or Similar size), or a 900ml pot. the items can be distributed everywhere on your person. Altoid tin are to small. It will give you a 6 hr to 24 hr survival worth of gears. And, even a worst scenario, the tin might fall off from your.pocket. It happened to me. I was only left with my Primitive skills. Once you have it on your person, it's very difficult to lose all your gears at once. I hope that it helped to clear-up your lack of knowledge. Thank you.

    Definitely not a 5 pound coffee tin. That looks like a 2 pound container. I prefer Mors Kochanski's idea of using the percolator coffee pot. More functional, and just as waterproof as this if you seal it with some good tape.

    Get your ferro rods & magnesium rods at firesteel.com, I am just a customer and not tied in with them. Add some braided fish line 20 to 100#, sew with it, fish with it, cordage, light & small, it will fit into what you have, add a needle or two.

    At the end of the day, it will make zero difference on who recommends what if a person does not actually try it out and practice. The old adage applies here the more you know the less you need. Better have some knowledge if this kit is going to keep ones bacon out of the fire.
