    If you pay attention during the "violin" section you will see that he is not picking the strings but just controlling the volume knob and fingering on the neck... absolutely amazing!!!

      It is the technically most impressive part. Imagine being 1/10 of a second of with the knob, that would add up in time and destroy every thing within seconds.

    Ah yes, once again watching Kel who is classically trained listening to Mr. Edward Van Halen play Eruption. Her facial reaction's with her left eyebrow being raised is just price less. It show's that no matter the style of music if it is done correctly can really be appreciated by everyone. From the rocker's all the way to those who were classically trained. That is the wonderful thing about music, it is all the same language.

    • @iambecomepaul
      @iambecomepaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ll go a step further. Kel might be one of the few who can ACTUALLY appreciate this level of musicianship. I watched HER… not the video… because I wanted to SEE her put the puzzle together. Her face betrays. A classically trained person notices when she’s intrigued: she can’t hide it. EVH was a freak of nature. I sincerely think he was born out of his time. He could have given Mozart a run for his money. EVH was a classically trained pianist who brought that artistry to the guitar and along with Hendrix, changed the way we THINK about the guitar as an instrument. There have been hundreds of great guitarists… but EVH and Hendrix “changed it.”

      Had it, too. Always thought that the end of Cathedral in this solo, Eddie looked like Arnold Swarzenegger.. Watching that video was where I learned that Eddie played the finale of Eruption on the B string. I always played it on the G, but I have small hands, so it fit me better so I never changed. Same notes, so, WTF. I also have used the "pluck the vibrato bar springs from the back to induce feedback and enhance it by tapping the neck" thing to create the wind effect on my cover of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs." I'm a guitar nerd that way.

    I saw an interview with Eddie back in the eighties where he said all he cared about was playing guitar. While his friends and all the other school kids would be at(and throwing)parties, he would find an empty room or bathroom and lock himself in it with his guitar, and practice while everyone else was partying. During the times he would be in the toilet, people would be pounding on the door trying to get in to take a leak....
    Kind of shows is devotion to it, even back then. Not to mention it pretty much gives a hint as to how he got so great at playing....great story

      @Rob T - Fake news... Ed and Al both took piano lessons when Ed was 9-10 yrs old. They competed in the local Piano contests in the Pasadena area. Ed won several of these. Then his teacher realized that Ed could not read music and was playing by ear and by watching his teacher. Eddie was a child prodigy who developed into the best ears, composer, player, inventor and influencer, and Rock guitar Virtuoso/Guitar god. He was not playing concerts or an expert in music theory at 12. He is an excellent pianist/keyboardist now.

    It starts with "3:16" named for Wolfgang Van Halen's birthdate, then "Eruption," then "Cathedral," then the intro to "Mean Street", and ends with the ending of "Spanish Fly."
    Source: Watched this video when it came out in 1987, learned the whole thing on the guitar, can still play most of it. I can't play "Cathedral" with the volume swells, but with the right digital delay, isn't to hard with your fingers. So there's that.

He said ask me to play anything, and I said Eruption. He kind of laughed and played it flawlessly like it was nothing. It sounded like I had 1984 cranked up on the stereo, but he was never going to make a living out of it. He played some recording sessions, none with any bands you ever heard of, and that was it.

    When you look at the complete scope of things I really feel EVH is the greatest GUITAR GOD of all time. It takes more than great playing to be a superstar. How original are they.Before EVH who sounded like EVH.??? Who played like EVH.??? In 1978 Guitar player Magazine got an advanced copy of VH 1. They called everyone into THE LISTENING ROOM where they played Eruption over and over trying to figure out what was going on. Was it overdubs or a guitar running through a synth. This is Guitar Player magazine folks and they had no idea He made or modified his own equipment ,and countless people copied his ideas . In the early 80s one pickup guitars were the hot thing in rock because EVH had only one pickup in his homemade guitar. It only had one pickup because he didn't know how to wire in the second one. Big named guitar plyers were copying his mistakes. He is a unbelievable song writer and then there is his stage presence. well look at the video. Put all together I think he is the greatest

    • @pfrancis7483
      @pfrancis7483 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said. There's good. There's great. And there's the greatest. The greatest would know every inch of his tools or instrument, every sound it makes leaning against the wall, to being thrown through the air. The greatest would also know what that tool does and interacts with in everything and all around it, from its own cord receiving power, to its other tools in the bag. Eddie was a genius mostly because he wasn't afraid to try. It's trying the "good" and "greats" failed at. And a classical education didn't hurt. LoL

    I saw this concert on t.v. back when I was like 6 and and by the age of 10 I got my parents to buy me a guitar. He was a big influence on so many guitarist including me. I remember practicing tapping when I was getting better because of him and Randy Road's I heard classical music before I ever heard classical music. It was like reversed from what Kel explained I heard the amplified version of classically influenced music then later got into classical music! I was like oh, this sounds like Megadeth in a way just a few more notes here and there lol! Anyway, great reaction as always!

    Thanks guys for this reaction to King Edward Van Halen! No one person has been more influential or the catalyst for more people picking up the guitar than Eddie, period!! Often imitated, but never duplicated. Kel should know that Eddie was a classically trained pianist that routinely won myriad piano competitions as a child with thousands of competitors. He was truly a child prodigy on piano at a young age before he transitioned to guitar. Keep up the great work and reactions!! More VH would be mucho appreciated!!

    His leads and solos were what people often talk about. But he wrote VH's music and was an amazing in-the-pocket rhythm player. His riffs energized their songs and drew people to VH, along with a new sounding rock back in the late 70's early 80's. He inspired so many guitar players, including me. What young, teenage kid who just picked up a guitar in the early 80's didn't want to be EVH?
