The Tragic Story Of B-52 Stratofortress 'Czar 52' - Fairchild Air Force Base Crash

- The B-52 Stratofortress is a colossal aircraft. When you see one of these planes, you are instantly amazed by the sheer size of it with its huge wingspan. It was used throughout a number of different conflicts by the United States Air Force having been first developed during the Cold War.
The B-52 was a high altitude bombing aircraft that saw service during the Vietnam War and was modified heavily to be able to carry out carpet bombing. It is still in service today and is an extremely impressive plane. However the story of B-52 Stratofortress 'Czar 52' is an extremely sad one.
At the hands of a pilot who had an extremely notorious reputation for being a daredevil and for taking huge risks, the Stratofortress would horrifically crash during a training manoeuvre, killing everyone on board. Today we look at the horrific Fairchild Air Force Base Crash, of Czar 52.

No way in the world would I had been in any bird with him period.
Thou shalt maintain thy airspeed lest the ground rise up and smite thee. Required subject on the first day of flight training.
In a B-52 squadron, you typically don’t have the luxury of being able to choose who you fly with, as the hundreds of officers, NCOs, and airmen that flew with Holland prior to the crash can attest. You follow orders.
@@nordan00 If it was just me i get that, but if i had a family meaning wife and kids to naw. With all the messed up stunts he was pulling he was pulling o would have transferred or quit! Not ended up the way this turned out...
@@diorjones8475 You’ve obviously never been in the military.
When I heard the narrator say 1944 instead of 1994, I was pretty sure he'd just misspoke since he knew everything else about this crash. So, there was no need for me to be the 15th person to correct him. - TH-camrs are like sharks in the water when they hear a mistake. LOL
But he says it TWICE
It's a shame that pilot was still allowed to fly. Imagine how scary it'd be as the co-pilot forced to fly with him.
Just so you know, "Czar" is pronounced "ZAR" not "SUHZAR". Great video!
All the other grammar Nazi's are beating me to it.
Yep and he slaughtered “Yakima” too.
"Suhzar" refers to the salad.
Thought it was somewhere between tsar and czar 🤷♂️
@@relwalretep Also not "CEESAR", but rather like "TSAR"
Sad Strory RIP ..... one thing thou .. Did you get the year wrong? As it really sounds like you said 1944 at time 0.29 .. Should say 1994
I do apologise, when I made this i’d had a really busy day at work! My mind must have been stuck in the Second World War after teaching it! Thanks mate
Yeah I was like...I remember this but I wasn't alive in 1944.

We all make mistakes mate.
I've just found your channel and binge watching. Modern History fascinates me, and being ex RAF, aviation history especially is a passion of mine.
Judging by the likes and comments for this vid nobody is finding fault.
Thanks for bringing us such detailed and interesting content! Have a great Christmas and stay safe!
The real one to blame is the pilot's direct superior who allowed him to continue piloting after he was initially identified as reckless. Simple. An experienced, but reckless fool of a pilot killed my sister, her husband and their 7 months old baby (and himself and his girlfriend), because the thought he knew better than what the aircraft's instruments told him whilst flying in bad weather in 10 meter visibility.
Sorry to hear about your loss, these guys SHOULD NOT GET A SECOND CHANCE.
This crash happened in 1994, not 1944. Terrible narration since you clearly state the crash happened before the B-52 was even in the design phase.
Mcgeehan ejected clear of the plane but was burned to death from the huge fireball.
No, he never made it out.
Man, had a couple of thousand hours in G’s and H’s back in the day, some under fire. But this is always particularly brutal to watch. If you slow the video down, you can see that the copilot tried to eject as his hatch blows just before impact. Brutal!
That's like, 4 Colonels down in one go?
Someone fill me in on this, wasn't the Colonel flying as co-pilot because he wanted to keep a close eye on Lt. Colonel Holland?
And I can hazard a guess as to why that other pilot didn't show up.
He didn't want to die.
You are correct. I knew Bob Wolfe and Ken Huston when the three of us were Captains at Grand Forks AFB, and I recall several B-52 crew dogs who did not want to fly with Bob Holland.
@@markaustin643wow, higher ups should be charged.
@@rogerbrandt6678 A couple of O-6's were disciplined over this incident.
I had a second story office with west-facing windows 30 miles away and saw the smoke that afternoon. At the time I thought, wow, black smoke means something big is on fire. Not too long after that I heard about the crash. Bad day at Fairchild for sure.
The crash was caused by a reckless pilot who was reported for dangerous maneuvers mulitples times but was never disciplined in a meaningful way.
You keep stating the crash occurred in 1944..... it’s was 1994.
Apologies, when I made this i’d had an extremely busy day at work! Mind must have been stuck in the Second World War!
@@TheUntoldPast Yeah mate, im reading the wikipedia page on my other monitor and youre LITERALLY just reading straight off of it
0:28 "1944" 2:51 "1944" You should have double checked this video before you uploaded it. To clarify it was 1994 not 1944, your out by 50 years. Furthermore you're using old black and white video at 2:51 as well which will confuse people even more as to when this happened. You also go onto show a black and white picture of Bud Holland, I don't know why the hell you did that, there are many colour photographs of him. Also later you mention the report was released in "1995" which is true but then theres a 51 year time difference from what you said earlier. You should have caught that.
At 0:25, it did not occur in 1944 but "On Friday, 24 June 1994,"
I’m guessing the reasons this has 24k views and only 291 views are - mispronunciation of Czar, “Nuculur” instead of “new-clear”, getting the year wrong, but by far the most irritating is the way the narrator speaks, putting unnecessary emphasis on random words and on the last word of every. single. sentence. It makes it very hard to listen to. For example 5.39, you drag out the word “flight” yet seconds later say it normally. 7.50 you pronounce manoeuvre as manoovuuuh. 8.24 danger becomes daynguuh, 9.17 future as fuuhtaah etc. It’s a very weird, affected way of speaking and off-putting.
It's AI. These are getting really annoying
How in the hell is the pilot that was supposed to fly the mission guilty of anything? If anything he is lucky
He was a hotdogger treating the B-52s as if they were fighters. He maneuvered one so tightly that gas came out of the gas tanks. He ignored minimum safety clearances at one time he was supposed to fly one 52 low over a mountain for a photo shoot, but not lower than a certain height. He went lower, so low the photographers thought he was going to crash and jumped to the ground. No other pilot wanted to fly with him. Lucky? How? He was stupid.
@@LuisRamos-ou8zb No I’m talking about the guy they mentioned in the video that was originally scheduled to fly the mission but didn’t end up doing it. They said he was guilty of bailing out on the mission.
@@LuisRamos-ou8zb As with Space Shuttle Challenger, the luck eventually ran out.

I was in the air force when this happened (91' to '95) I was an aircraft electrician on C-141's stationed on the east coast, this happened in washington. Funny, i don't remember hearing anything about this crash.
I guess the Airforce wanted to keep it hush hush.
It’s not a good look to admit the Air Force promotes imbeciles to pilots…
Holland may have been alot of things but certainly not an imbecile. Imbeciles don't graduate from the air force academy and become B-52 pilots. Granted his actions were foolish but he was not a fool.
@@mikem3875 You just made my point.
I was 2 years old when that happened my dad was in the building that the plane nearly hit so I heard a lot about it growing up. But the Fairchild shooting didn’t know that happened until my early adult years.
Keep in mind this occured four days after the hospital shooting.
Those poor kids experienced something of a living nightmare how could they not be scarred, as for their father Col. McGeehan: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
You lost me at 1944
Bad management. Martin Heneghan style management
I'm confused the crash in June 1944 it says was that supposed to be this one ? That the video is about ? It was Just an error it happened in June of 94. Great video!
Hes said 1944 instead of 1994 in error.
It was NOT 1944!!
Time to edit this video!!
nice copy and paste from wikipedia mate.
The narrator is terrible
1944 ?
What a goof.
Arrogant incompetence .
Crashed in 1944 did it?
I can't stand the AI voice.
Me either
That’s not an ai voice 😭
Wish voice cockpit recorder was in the plane. Would like to know what was said between the 2 pilots before the plane crashed.
It's on the Flight Channel on YT
@@vermontbred If it is, it's a fake. B-52's don't have CVR's
1994 not 1944
1994, not 1944
1994
tell us all about vulcan crash at G.N.A.S.(not a pilot error?).
That is not an aerobatic plane , the pilot flies extremely recklessly
7:01 for some reason the film is reversed in this section of the video. Also that's a generic early shiny aluminum B-52 with the pointy tail; not the crash aircraft, which had the later flat-top tail and was camouflaged. compare 0:52.
Lust nit-picking....
Flying it like he stole it, R.I.P all.
It always made me sad hearing the story behind this and how this guy who was in charge of his airmen crew where set to be in this flight but said no I'm going you all will stay here I don't trust him and then the main piolot get everyone in the plane killed out of his arrogance and pride and saw he couldn't stop it and got everyone killed. Sad.....
First here!! The content is just getting better and better!!
Sad story
Thanks mate! :)
Sounds like the narrator said 1994
One fucking guy....
Thank God for volume control! The Narrator's voice is a big pain in the ass!
BS aircraft
1944?
1944?
That's damned good quality video for 1944
I thought they were money pits requiring crazy maintenance especially their engines
