I so needed to hear this today. I will soon turn 70, and my children and grandchildren are not interested in my dolls. I have packed them up with the intention of selling them. I am going to take my favorites back out and enjoy them now. Thank you for helping me feel excited about my dolls again!

This touches my heart. I will be 67 in 5 months and I can't tell you how many times I've been down in the dumps and picked up one of my dolls to hug or groom. Sometimes I just sit and look at them. I'm glad you are taking your favorite friends out to enjoy.

I'm only 22 but I already have a plan for my dolls. When I get older I plan on physically giving my dolls to people I believe will cherish them. I will definitely figure something else out for the rest as I get older. My sister's and family know that my dolls are valuable and that I care about them.

That's a beautiful and thoughtful plan for your dolls! It's admirable how you're already thinking about ensuring your cherished collection finds a loving home in the future. Your approach shows a deep appreciation for the sentimental and intrinsic value of each doll. It's great that your family understands how much your dolls mean to you. Keep nurturing your passion for doll collecting, and I'm sure you'll find the perfect caretakers for your dolls when the time comes. Your forward-thinking and caring attitude is truly inspiring! Thank you for a wonderful presentation. I have a dear friend who will be 85 years old in early March of this year. She has many beautiful dolls. She made porcelain dolls from molds, cloth dolls some of which she made from Elinor Peace Bailey patterns, some vintage dolls, and some dolls that are probably considered antiques now that belonged to her mother and her grandmother. She has been concerned about leaving all of her dolls to her children to deal with after she passes away. She has given away a few dolls, of which I have been blessed to receive some of them. I have been discussing her concern with her and asking her if she still enjoys her dolls. She has answered in the affirmative. She has had a discussion with her children, and they support her decision to keep her dolls and they will lovingly take care of them in some way after she passes away. She is beginning to feel more at ease now. It's wonderful to have doll friends.

Totally agree with the splurging!! I used to be really over cautious when I started out, to the point I'd have to justify it to myself and then miss out on sales, despite knowing I could've afforded it. One day I saw a doll for sale at a show that I just went for. I felt DREADFUL at first spending that money but she has since become my favorite, she now has more clothes than me and travels all over! I adore her. Treat yourself sometimes, you only live once!

I've always been fortunate that I learned not to care about other people's snap judgements of me pretty early in life. I have always loved dolls, and long ago when my friends and I were getting into our teens, they all started feeling self-conscious about loving dolls, so they stopped playing with dolls and enjoying dolls. But I never did. I transitioned from a kid playing with dolls to an adult collector without missing a beat. I never got rid of my childhood dolls, but a lot of them didn't survive my early 'restoration' and 'customization' attempts. I did sell a lot of my dolls and donated a lot more in the late 90s, but I didn't part with the dolls that were truly special to me. I let go of some great dolls, but I have great dolls again, so it's fine.
I think it's terribly sad when someone puts aside something they really love because they're worried that other people will make fun of them. Those people are not worth caring about. Life is too short to waste a minute of it thinking you have to please other people by denying yourself something you love and enjoy. Especially something as harmless as dolls and toys. Take the joy you can from life, and leave the bitter people to stew in their own sour juice.
I really don't know what my holy grail doll would be at this point. I don't have a #1 Barbie, or a Hawaiian SuperStar Barbie, or a Free Moving Cara, or a Talking Busy Steffie, but that's fine. Something to look forward to. But I'm just as happy to find yet another Golden Dream Barbie with her original jewelry, even though I have more than ten of her. There's always something cool to collect, and sometimes it's good just to enjoy what we already have.

It's truly wonderful that you've held onto your love for dolls and embraced it throughout your life, and your perspective on not letting others' judgments dictate your passion is inspiring. Keep enjoying the dolls you love, and there's always excitement in discovering new collectibles while cherishing what you already have.

Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. Thank you for being so open and honest. I love my dolls. They mean the world to me and I’m so glad that I found the virtual doll convention. I’m so happy I found you. I love my dolls they mean the world to me. My children are more to me than anything I could buy or own. Sometimes they make me feel sad because they don’t understand. I lost my oldest son to Covid in 2020. He was my buddy. He would go to swap meets and flea markets, and bring me dolls he thought I would like. Now that he’s gone those dolls are so precious to me. He could bring me weird Barbie, and I was delighted. Thank you for helping me to understand this is OK. I will enjoy every moment of it from now on. I wish you all the best in the new year. 💝

Hi Rachel. I'm in! Always have been and always will be.
I'm eclectic in my taste with a very wide range of age, material and style of dolls and have never felt bad about it. Perhaps it is easier for me to be that way because I have never lived anywhere where there are doll clubs so there are no people to tell me I'm doing the wrong thing. I just have a little time each day to spend with any doll who calls for my atention, my doll books or looking at/watching doll things on line.
My doll friends, apart from my little grandson, are all online and my friend dolls are here, on their way here or somewhere out there waiting for me to send for them to come here. I'm lucky enough to have been learning about, playing with and enjoying dolls for almost 70 decades.

Thank you Rachel. This was a great video. Loved all the tips. I started collecting fashion dolls in 1995 with Gene Marshall because my husband spotted her in my Barbie Bazaar magazine and thought I might like her. I have never taken some of my dolls out of their mailers, even to look at them. I was waiting for my retirement. Now that I’m in retirement well, you know what I’ve been going through. The death of my mom in 2022 and my husband being diagnosed with cancer in early 2023. We have high hopes for 2024 to build my doll room and unpack hundreds of beautiful fashion dolls. I love you and the VDC so much. You got me back into dolls when my doll light was all but extinguished. Beautiful Grace Marie Fitzpatrick!! I am 60 years old and the Barbie movie actually motivated me to get out my old Barbies and started me collecting. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 10 and died when I was 16. I remember being shamed by my girlfriend for still playing with dolls when I was about 12. I continued to play with my dolls in secret until about 16 and then put them away. I didn’t know it but they were my therapy then and they’re my therapy now. Still, I’m the only doll collector I know and still get rolling eyes and looks. But this time I’m older and don’t give a damn😄! I’m blessed to have a husband on board AND to have people like YOU who get it and bring joy to the doll world! Thank you!!!🥰

Me too, I really needed to hear this even if I've been collecting for a long time. I print photos of my dolls (stock photos where possible) and write details on the back of the picture. A great idea to pin notes under the dolls clothing. I keep all the boxes so could put the photos in the empty boxes. Also loved the reaction on criticism, I have more of a problem with indifference to my collection. Thank you!

Girl you were so precious hugged up with the Raggedy Ann doll! I agree! There are certain dolls that are part of a small lot, and the company's defunct, and the condition is great-I dont play games if its a grail, I get it. #2 hit home. I started making historical costumes for 12” dolls and bought at least 50 in boxes from Goodwill online. Then I saw Grace and realized how much easier it would be to sew for 16” dolls. During the pandemic I spent thousands on Tonner dolls and accessories. Then the Barbie movie came out and I started yearning for them again. Frankly my ADHD brain got all frazzled with guilt for “betraying” one or the other. So at the moment all of them are in storage

Your journey with doll collecting and creating historical costumes sounds wonderfully rich and diverse. Remember, your passion for dolls, whether they're 12" or 16", Tonner or Barbie, is all part of your creative journey. There's no betrayal in exploring different interests or shifting your focus - it's all about what inspires you at the moment. Don't let guilt overshadow your joy in this amazing hobby. Each doll and each costume you've created is a testament to your talent and enthusiasm. When you're ready, those dolls in storage will be there, waiting for new adventures and creations.

Rachel, I so enjoyed all your essential tips for Doll Collecting😃😃💖💖💖💖💖!! And it would be nice in the future if you could do a video on Doll Doctor's Association that repairs rag dolls and vintage plastic as well as vintage vinyl dolls. I have a Eegee Doll that is around 18 inches and she was made in 1967, before I was born and she is a very pretty doll. However, after I gave her a gentle bath with soap and a shampooing with only Tresemme Conditioner that I use on my own hair, there was a hole in her head and I noticed she could use a restringing in one of her arms. So far, I just put a silk scarf around her head to hide the hole and I just can not give her away because I just really love her. And my Raggedy Andy from Childhood is way too loved with a head injury and I think he could use a cleaning, but like you said you could ruin rag dolls if you clean them and I am a terrible sewer so I wish there was someone who could sew him up too. And I am so happy that you found a Schoenhut Restoration group that helped you fix those molded dolls!!!! That Schoenhut Restoration Group looks so talented that they looked as if they got divine intervention or a miracle was created to go from badly black mold to beautiful collectable dolls that looked brand new is really awesome😃😃💖💖💖💖💖!!!! And I know what you mean about sunlight. When my Late Grandfather bought for me an Eefanbee Doll for Christmas at age 14, even though I did not want to collect dolls at that age any more, I did display her in my room, but I stupidly put her on my shelves, not realizing how much sunlight she received. Well, this Eefanbee's reproduction of a late Victorian dress and hat went from being green with white polka dots to a permanent purple with white polka dots. And I so agree with you that the best way to buy and sell Dolls is zero pressure and straight from the heart with common sense. And it would be nice if you did a video on local and national auctions or other groups that would take dolls and teddy bears. My Boyfriend's Dad does not collect Teddy Bears, but he had a Rudi Bear which was a John Wawanmaker Christmas exclusive in the 1980s that my Boyfriend's Late Mom bought, but my Boyfriend's Dad will be 92 on Jan. 17th and he wanted me to keep Rudi because he knows I love Teddy Bears and he was afraid that someday it could wind up in the trash, if he did nothing. So, I am holding Rudi and if my Boyfriend's Dad wants him back during Christmas, Rudi can return, but my Boyfriend's Dad just wants me to keep it in the worst way. Thank you so much Rachel for this video😃😃💖💖💖💖💖!! You make Doll Collecting more fun and you make me feel as if it is cool to collect Dolls even if I am not a kid any more, just like I think my Late Grandfather wanted too😃😃💯💯👍👍💖💖💖💖💖!!!

I have always loved Mod Barbie, but have been too scared to take that leap. But this year I decided to go for it, got my love, Francie, who I've wanted since I was 10 and seeing her in one of Janine Fennick's books. Spent this video repairing a really beat up Yellow Mellow dress that was bundled with her. That dress is now on the only vintage Barbie I had, and it feels right. I still love my Bratz, My Scene, Monster High, etc, but I am loving this new direction.

I’d love to come see your Dolls in person at some point in my life but if they’re all in boxes/behind glass, I probably won’t be able to also, what do you think the best way to keep my Dolls in good shape/clean is when I can’t see them on my shelves? 15:54 .

Thank you so much for reaching out and for your interest in our store. We absolutely welcome you to visit, and rest assured, we have many dolls that you can touch and experience firsthand. Our store is designed to be accessible, and we'd be more than happy to assist you in exploring our collection.
Regarding keeping your dolls clean and in good shape, here are a few tips that might help:
Dusting Regularly: Using a soft, dry cloth or a small, soft-bristled brush, gently dust your dolls regularly. This will help keep them clean without the need for visual inspection.
Safe Handling: When handling your dolls, make sure your hands are clean and dry to avoid transferring any dirt or oils.
Proper Storage: Store your dolls in a cool, dry place. If you're using cases or shelves, lining them with acid-free tissue paper can provide an extra layer of protection.
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Even if you can't see them, try to ensure your dolls are not exposed to direct sunlight, as this can cause fading over time.
Regular Check-ups: Perhaps a friend or family member could help with occasional detailed check-ups to ensure everything is in order.
We'd be thrilled to have you visit our store. Please let us know if there's anything specific you'd like to experience or learn more about during your visit. We are here to ensure you have a wonderful and inclusive experience.
Looking forward to welcoming you soon!
