- Epic day surfing Huntington Beach?
I'm not sure if this has happened to you but the entire time I was filming that day I thought it was one of the best days I've ever seen at Huntington. I had to second guess myself after going through the clips.
Yes, it was a good day but was it epic?

I surfed NS on Wednesday, the second day of the swell and it was as good as it gets. I saw Teddy Navarro get one of the best barrels I've ever seen at the pier. It was indeed an epic day!!!

Good combination of wave height, calm winds. A tad more west in the swell and warmer water and it would be epic.

having surfed here for 45 plus year. That is an Epic day at HB. There have been many, but that qualifies.

Its epic because the locals at this condos sport are such groms, but think they are so cool.. and you filmed them

So at the start of the tape I was speaking in the voice of 'Comic Book Guy' - "BEST Huntington Beach,... EVER."... And then you brought it back down to reality... But let's be real... If that were the conditions they got for the US Open, they'd be beside themselves with joy at their good fortune. Which is to say that much of the mediocre performance and wipeout issues - can be chalked up to "rider error". Those are just 'average joes' doing their best in above average waves, at a decent spot, on the best day of the year. Kanoa Igarashi and Brett Simpson would be tied at 20 points - and counting-back, on several of their back-ups, to break the tie.
I think the secret for those top waves we see - aside from the level of the riding - is the law of superposition. On a combo swell where the wave trains line up the best, you get a super peaky A-frame, with added size, power and hollowness... On a bunch of the lesser waves, you've just got typical HB, on a SSW, or a WNW. Serviceable and solid, and shapely enough to rip... But it's not Pipeline.
You might want to check out the video from RJ's and the other points south of there, from that day. Beefs and Brent Weldon both got some gems from the hollower and longer lines of HB's sister-city. NB was having a pretty classic day, too... Maybe not enough PURE South energy to make driving all the way down the peninsula worth while... But still pretty sweet.

I grew up in HB in the 70's into early 90's and those are above average waves for sure. I would be more than happy out there! Besides the phrase G.O.A.T. being applied too much, "Legend" is another. Any Joe Blow these days calls themselves or their friends that. I just laugh when I hear that. Only a handful of True Legends out there and by throwing this term around to anybody that can put a leash on the correct foot, it weakens the true meaning for those who truly are. Just saying.... Thanks Brad, really enjoyed viewing and the tunes.
I lived in HB in 1975, worked at El Don's liquor, and enjoyed watching Mike Purpus (in one of his trademark multi-colored wetsuits) surf along with David Nuuhiwa. Super great vibe to the city until the riot at the pier in '76. Luckily my boss, Vince, was working that night and I caught all the action from an apartment above PCH from a safe distance.

Like you said Brad, Epic is way overused. But, looked like some guys got epic rides on a great Socal day at Huntington. Absolutely loved the closeouts, unmakeable, and collision waves. Truly showed the side of surfing that makes us keep searching for that "Epic wave!".

Well about 10 years ago maybe not quite that long I pulled up to get coffee there at that joint across the street from where you're filming there were a few spiritual maladies in that parking lot that were giving me the vibe I didn't even have my surfboard I was moving some crab gear from Redondo Beach area to Laguna now I think about it was longer than 10 years ago but the waves that I saw there that morning at that sandbar on the north side we're about 25 ft faces or bigger perfect A-frames I've been around up there surfed the pier back when the theater was there at night, back in the late '70s when most everybody got along but that's another story, the waves I saw that morning it might as well have been pipeline when those A-frame piece when the lip hit the water it snapped and made like this huge sound it was just awesome one guy in the water and the rest were standing on the beach I was in the middle of my work game but it was the best HB I've ever seen,. Probably some of the best waves in California I've ever seen I'm going to put it up there in the top 10 but that morning it was just incredible perfect A-frames no closeouts no unmakeable waves just perfect giant thick barrels and spitting like nobody's business this is about halfway to what that morning was I'll never forget it over and out and thank you again for your nice footage

A couple weeks before this there was another combo that was really good, I think it was even better then the day in the vid. The tide was too high, and then the wind picked up quick.

Cool surf video but you totally ruined it by adding a soundtrack. It's best to include the natural sounds of the ocean in surf videos. Mother nature beats man made noise every time.
