Hey, there's RTS game called Beyond All Reason and it's probably most quality made open-source game i ever seen. It's in alpha stage, but it's development team make it better and in some many aspects (i'm not a developer, but i did ton of bug reports for speedup making this game better).

I will always remember 0 A.D. as the first package in every package manager.

Mindustry definitely deserves to be put on the list. Personally I would put it at the top. If you haven't checked it out, it's a mix between Factorio, Bloons and StarCraft and it's incredibly polished

I think you should take a closer look at OG SuperTux in the near future. There's a huge update coming out that features new mechanics and overhauled graphics that make the game super beautiful.

Shoutout for Battle for wesnoth ! I spent hours on this game, definitly one of the best turn based strategy games !
Nexuiz/Xonotic surely as changed over the decade, I'm glad they were able to maintain development/community
Unlike warsow (which is sad : I loved warsow ! )

I had no idea Veloren even existed. Thank you for putting this video together!

thanks for this list! on my channel I also played Valyria Tear (a JRPG) and Ardentryst (a cool mix between RPG and platform). I'll definitely try Veloren and the two strategy games you mentioned

Watching this video makes me want to pick up Wesnoth again. I forgot how fun it is to play that game.

I captured hours of footage of gameplay... possibly because I just kept playing and forgot I was recording 😅

Honestly, Red Eclipse is also a really good open source game. It has good graphics, gameplay mechanics, and it even made it on Steam.
There's also Endless Sky (Also on Steam), and it's kinda like Eve Online but with a god camera.

  • @diligentcircle
    @diligentcircle ปีที่แล้ว +3

You might wanna take a look at Endless Sky. It's a clone, but it's really well designed. I look to it as a great example for one of my own gamedev projects.
Would also highly recommend Flare. I've played through it a couple times, it's a well-designed game.
Project: Starfighter is a classic open source game that, while flawed, I loved enough to start maintaining it. Seeing someone else's take on both Project: Starfighter's classic experience (which my current maintained version retains as an optional "difficulty" setting) and the modernized experience I developed would be interesting.
I of course also rather like the games I develop (ReTux and Naikari), but I'm of course biased on that front.

I enjoy all of those except for Veloren which I'd never heard of. I haven't played 0ad since 2015 or so. Apparently it's still in alpha even now.

While it's nice to play Steam games on Linux, there's always this certain charm on FOSS games that always gets me to want to play them, even if they're not technically as impressive as popular Steam games.

If you install minetest, one of the games that runs on it (in it??) is called "Exile". It is a stone-age survival game, and disturbingly difficult. Or just disturbing, because most of the time, you die on the first day. For people who like a challenge.
It doesn't have many hostile mobs, like Minecraft has its creepers, skeletons and zombies. The only hostile mob I've seen is a kind of bird. But it is o so difficult to play.

Tremulous is great, great level design, but it's only for multiplayer.

Been playing STK and 0.a.d. for years. Fantastic games.
Also, OpenArena is under active development again, with recent Android and ChromeOS releases

Haha, I still remember the first time I tried it : I crashed running at low speed (taking a left turn) on the taxiway 🙃
Simulation sure is towards the most dedicated players !
And for what I understand, flightGear is one of the best one

Man... I'm trying to remember a game I played in roughly 2007. I remember it being a "top down" style 3d adventure game. I'm pretty sure you played as Tux and had a sword or lightsaber... You often were defeated by robots for some reason.
I have no idea what it was called or if I'm even remembering the game correctly. I must have played on Puppy Linux or Arch...

Meh. I've already heard of all these games before, including the ones you only showed footage of.
You should've made this a longer list or provide more commentary for why these games are good.
