Franz Peter Schubert was a late Classical era composer and songwriter who laid the groundwork for the Romantic Era. Schubert lived for 31 years from 1797 to 1828 and like Mozart he wrote lots of music during his short life. He was taught music at a young age from his father’s music school and sang in the St. Stephen’s Cathedral Choir in Vienna (Joseph Haydn and his brother also sang in that choir when they were Schubert’s age). His voice was noticed by Mozart’s rival and alleged killer Antonio Salieri who was the court Composer in Vienna and had taught Beethoven recently. Schubert was influenced by the music of his predecessors Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Schubert’s first work was as a piano fantasy in G written in about 1810. He wrote his first symphony in 1813. A symphony that follows the tradition of Haydn, Mozart and early Beethoven. All three of whom would be Schubert’s heroes. Schubert’s music started to change around 1820 and the change started with his leider (German songs) and he saw how Beethoven was changing music into Romanticism. Schubert’s music was never really performed publicly because other compsoers like Beethoven and Rossini hogged the concert programs. Instead Schubert performed his leider in private concerts for friends at his home. Beethoven who saw lots of potential in Schubert even attended one as a guest of honor. Schubert would be a torchbearer at Beethoven’s funeral in 1827 where 20,000 people attended. Schubert requested that his grave be next to his musical idol. Schubert’s music faded into obscurity after his 1828 death until composers like Felix Mendelssohn, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt started championing it. Schubert is known for his over 600 leider including his three song cycles Winterreise, Die Schone Mullerin and Schwanengesang. He is also known for his piano work including his work for four hands, his late sonatas, and impromptus. Schubert also wrote 9 symphonies just like Beethoven. All of these works are considered transitional works between the Classical Period and the Romantic Period like Beethoven’s.
