Dorothy Kilgallan also guessed it was Tallulah Bankhead when she appeared later on a second show.
Tallulah Bankhead was about as gracious and charming as any Mystery Guest ever on "What's My Line". A shame she was not on longer as her very presence always gave dignity and elegance to any situation.
Martin Gabel is just the best... just love his subtle form of humour... "John... John! Before you make a mistake, it's MRS Kelly"

John Daly was expertly stretching the game to fill the time after the mystery guest was guessed so quickly. Some comments say that he speaks too much but in fact he is steering the live show towards an orderly ending without seeming to be under pressure. That's his skill as a news anchor - if you've ever chaired a debate or even a small meeting, you'll know how stressful it can be to cover the business in the given time.
…. You give a gallant defense of John Daly‘s answering and answering and answering for Mrs. Kelley. I had to fast forward so I wouldn’t have to listen to Daly’s extraneous and tangled answers. I just wish he would let the guests speak; otherwise why have Mrs. Kelley on at all!
Indeed, after the Tallulah Bankhead segment, he looked a little bothered when checking the time...

@@Jasper7182009 I agree. There have been times when John interfed with a contestants answer and it turned out he had no idea what he was talking about. I remember
one guy who came on the show that raised hogs. After the game was over, one of the panelists ask about certain breeds of hogs and instead of letting the contestant
answer, John tried to answer for him. I have been around hogs all my life and the answer John gave was not even close to being right. So, yes, although he was a
great moderator, there were times when he changed answers when he should have just let well enough alone.
Never seen anyone say a thing about it. We all know how television worked.
I love how Arlene changes her question when it looks like she might get a no.
In 1950, in an effort to cut into the ratings of the Jack Benny and Charlie McCarthy radio shows, NBC did a radio series with Tallulah Bankhead called "The Big Show." A frequent guest star - a co-star in all but name - was Fred Allen. In one famous sketch, Fred and Tallulah did a parody of "one of those morning radio shows hosted by a husband and wife." One part was the show as it aired with a happy couple promoting several products. The other was the couple fighting like cats and dogs and hating the products they promoted. Dorothy had been doing one of "those morning radio shows" with her husband Dick Kolmar since 1945.
A fantastic sketch-- which originally aired on Fred's own radio series. It was so popular, they revived it on his own series, again on "The Big Show" and AGAIN in expanded form in the movie "We're Not Married" with Ginger Rogers playing Tallulah's role.
One night f.a. had Mr and Mrs James Mason doing the routine on his show.
Dorothy getting Tallulah correct with only two clues is impressive, she was a force to be reckon with for sure. I also love how when she mentions Tallulah's parrot how sad Tallulah sounds in her response as she knows she's been guessed. And Arlene's wit in the last round had me in stitches! The comment about the all night Turkish bath and asking Mrs. Kelly if she was open all night was hilarious. This was such a fun episode all around!
Tallulah was not an ordinary Alabamian. She was the daughter of William Bankhead, who was Speaker of the US House of Representatives. She was already a well known actress when he died in office. Bankead was one of several House speakers who died during the Hoover/Roosevelt period along with Garner, who resigned, later to his great regret, to become Vice President. The turnover stopped when Bankhead's successor, Sam Rayburn, became the longest serving House speaker in history.
One of my favorite Tallulah stories, coming not so long after this appearance, and connected with her drinking, was the man who saw her on the street and asked her if she was Tallulah Bankead. Her reply: " I used to be."
@@preppysocks209 a couple of my favorite Tallulah sayings: "I'm as pure as the driven slush." and when asked about her alleged drug use and bisexualism: "My daddy warned me about men and booze. He didn't say anything about women and cocaine."
Although from Alabama she was named after a place in Georgia...Tallulah Gorge...
Great show! I appreciate the upgrade! I love Arlene's expression around the 5:35 mark when she thinks she knows the first guest. A 'light bulb' moment if there ever was one.....and even funnier when she was wrong! Truly gracious throughout the show!

Tallulah Bankhead had a lot of grace
Both Dorothy and Arlene were on the right track with saddles but they asked their questions in such a way that the answer had to be no.
Tallulah Bankhead was from my home town, Huntsville, Alabama. She was born in a building directly across from where the beauty shop my mom worked at was located.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful crown jewels of American television. A Classic show from an era when dignity, class, style, and clean humor were a perfect match to the unique personalities who delivered all of the above on a weekly basis.

Arlene is so smart, as is Dorothy.
Tallulah was larger than life. A huge hit on Broadway with "The Little Foxes" and "Private Lives," she was absolutely wonderful as one of several survivors Hitchcock's " Lifeboat" and absolutely delicious as a religious wacko in the grand guignol horror "Die! Die! My Darling!" where she torments poor, beautiful Stefanie Powers. This was her last film, dying of pneumonia the following year in 1968.

I love dorothy killgallen and arlene francis. This is my comfort watch on a sunday nite before i have to work on monday. I love these old shows. Im 60 and its fun to get lost in a better time and place. Im back in the early 60s
I only remember Tallulah as an older woman with the voice she featured on this episode of WML. I was stunned when I read that she was considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara.
She did test for it. Someone asked Katherine Hepburn if she had tested for the role. "No", she replied. "But I hear that Tallulah tested. I can't see her as Scarlett. But Aunt Pittipat, maybe!" When Tallulah heard that remark, her reply was unprintable!

Tallulah never screen tested. Selznick did ask if she was willing to do a photographic test just to see how she would appear in period costume. She was never seriously considered for Scarlett despite her determined campaign for the role (she got her Uncle to read a motion into the Congressional Record endorsing her casting). However, she was approached about playing Belle Watling.
Nice to have Dorothy back after surprising everyone the previous week.
Once again, Arlene with the best line of the night......"I just want to know if Miss Kelly is open all night." LOL
Arelene's wit was underappreciated, imo.
Not by WML fans. :) And actually, when she was at the height of her popularity, she did get a lot of positive comment in the press about her wit-- fully deserved!

Seems to me that Bennett was generally considered to be the funniest panelist. Nothing against Bennett, but his puns and corny one-liners were no match for Arlene s quick-witted humor. She was my favorite panelist by far.
WATCHMAN 117 Yes, I think she was fully appreciated for her wit and intelligence in her time-- that's why she was such a pioneer in terms of women in broadcasting, having hosted shows on radio going back as early as 1938. She was a brilliant hostess, always gracious, always charming, always funny.

I love that Janet Kelly's job even used to exist. So pure, innocent, noble, squeaky-clean.

Mrs. Sniffen was a very distinguished looking lady. And she had lots of teeth, too!
First game. There were a number of women who served in the U S Senate from 1922 to 1960 for short periods -- some were the wives of late male senators [notably Mrs Huey Long] She is the third woman who served for a longer period of time. First Hattie Caraway. Second Margaret Chase Smith. Then her from 1960 to 1967. She and her husband were the first husband-wife legislative team.
They're called public servants. Ha. Ha. They do their own thing without any regards for the people back home!

Arlene Francis was very good at that game.
Tallulah's play Midgie Purvis only ran for 21 shows. It was directed by Burgess Meredith and had a young Pia Zadora in it. It's amazing and very sad how many plays close so quickly. Considering all of the work, talent and money that goes into getting one off the ground.
Even Martin Gabel's Big Fish, Little Fish only lasted a bit less than 3 months and slightly more than 100 performances. It starred Jason Robards, Jr., Hume Cronyn and George Grizzard as well as Gabel -- certainly a respected and talented group. A later try in London directed by John Gielgud only lasted two weeks.
Perhaps such an early treatment of homosexuality had something to do with it but Tea and Sympathy touched on the same subject about 5 years earlier. Being the author Hugh Wheeler's first play might have been a factor.
Thanks for uploading this upgrade episode. I always enjoy watching these classic shows. This show has more entertainment than most of the present tv series and sitcoms combined.
The mainstays of the show - Cerf, Daly, Francis, Kilgannen - are long gone now, but who brought such class and wit and intelligence during their time. Bless 'em all for still giving us pleasure these many years on. Robert, uk.

Dorothy was highly educated on all things political and I find it hard to imagine she doesn't know one of only two women serving in the Senate.

A little untold history on the Arthur Godfrey family. Arthurs youngest brother was my dad's father. My grandfather was the youngest brother of arthur and was not a good man from what I have been told but their mom loved and would bail out babe no matter what he did. Arthur disowned his young brother but still did pay just enough of the bills/booze habit of his little brother every month so not to hurt his career (possibly). He could of done more to help our poor side if the family since he was a millionaire in my opinion but then again it was a different time and I want to believe Arthur did his best to his ability back then.

+Michael Maloney Yes sir, Also My father said that Arthur is mostly English (not irish like he portrayed) arthur might be 1/4-1/8 scotch I believe too. Arthur did not hate Jews like the media claims, my aunt and dad told me personally.
Here is another good true story. My dad broke both his legs in a real bad mortorcycle accident in the 60s. Doctors said we are going to cut one of your legs off, for we can't save it! My dad's sister (Rip) quickly got in touch with arthur through one of his staff (his lawyer I believe it was). Arthur then ordered a great Jewish surgeon of the time to come and look at my dad's leg. He came, examined his leg and said we can save this leg and did just that!
When Arthur passed away in the 80s he gave all his fortune to his immediate family but still did not forget to put his brothers kids in the will. My dad and his 6or7 bothers/sisters got 10 grand each from Arthur. Arthur had a good heart I believe to some extent and these true untold stories good or bad need to be heard. If you have any questions about Arthur I will asked my dad for you, He might have a good answer.
Excellent. Thanks for setting the record straight. He, unfortunately, seems to be best known for firing Julius LaRosa than anything else. Personally, I like him as Doris Day's father in The Glass Bottom Boat.

It blows my mind that it used to be the case that a US Senator would not have been recognized on sight by a well-educated, well-cultured panel such as the one usually assembled by this program. Particularly a US Senator who was cutting new historical turf.
think about how many freshman senators you would recognize by sight and out of context even today. In those days a West Coast senator's visage would not be shown very often in NY newspapers or the three national networks, again, especially one so recently elected. It is highly unlikely that Sen. Neuberger had even given her maiden Senate speech at this tie. Had her name been given, or a reference to Oregon made, the situation would have been entirely different, which is why they didn't do it.

@@preppysocks209 There was not nearly the political news coverage on TV then as there is now. Remember that this was in the era when the evening news was only 15 minutes, not 30, and the only other news programs that dealt in national politics were on Sunday morning.

Imagine there are only two women in the senate and a whole panel of people with some in the news industry have no idea what they look like or can't identify them by sight. A very different world it was.
How I am loving these. I would have been turning one year old in about five weeks from when this originally aired, so of course I don't remember it, but that said, I do remember growing up in this black and white era on television before color sprang up mid decade in many homes (not ours; my mother was prematurely widowed); there was something cozy and warm about this time, unique, well mannered, dressed, behaved, spoken etc. Even panel shows were accessible yet intellectual and educational for the average viewer.
It helps to have educated, knowledgeable, well brought-up and cultured people like John Daly and his panelists. Unlike most entertainment shows today

Oh I'm sitting here in western oregon university the senators alma mater freaking out because it's dead week and I am screwed but interesting to see states former senator on a game show

I was curious about Dorothy and her work and on Sparticus it mentioned she was hospitalized with a broken shoulder which is why John would have mentioned the pain she was suffering. In the Spring of 1963 she was hospitalized with anemia. Reading a cruel description she wrote of Mrs. Khrushchev's appearance and wardrobe while visiting the U.S. made me think she wasn't a particularly nice person. But can anyone who earns a living being a gossip columnist be "nice".

There have been other mystery guests besides Tallulah that there is NO WAY they can disguise their voices and get away with it. Jimmy Durante is one of them.
Another one would be Buddy Hacket and there are others.

This will sound strange, but Art Linkletter just gives me the creeps. His daughter jumped out of the fifth floor terrace in a condo in Hollywood. The remarks he made about her death were incredibly unkind. Google it and make your own determination. His daughter’s name was Diane.
There's evidence that she was murdered. The man was also implicated in the death of actress Carol Wayne.

From what I have read about Dorothy, she had a dependency problem(drugs and alcohol.
I really enjoyed her giggle, just like a little girl.
That's right, her addition finally killed her in 1965, overdose, sad.
They said a few shows before she had a very sore shoulder so make of that what you will.
Stuart Harris yes. John let’s everyone know that Dorothy was in hospital due to a shoulder problem. I think he also says, “Poor Dorothy. She’s really having a rough time of it.” That aired in April of 1965 and she died in November of 1965.

I suppose she had strong religious background so she alwyas did that. But she had strong sense of right and wrong; so she stood for an old shop detective but not for a senator.
I would have cringed at someone kissing Sheen’s ring! He was no more than a regular man.
Her deep voice was due to her heavy smoking habits. Up to more than 3 packs per day.

Oh God John. ..the long winded answer when the telephone wake up lady was on. He did this deliberately but frankly I found it annoying.
He always did that deliberately but in the case of final contestants it annoyed me very much. He did not gave time to the panelists and talked most of the time.

tallulah bankhead, one of the great personalities, i saw art linkletter late in his life, he was in his 80's and had lost a lot of his chops, he kept wandering off his usual anecdotal stories and getting real political, he was old fashioned conservative and openly telling people to vote for george w. bush or we were doomed... it was a little like what happened to charlton heston, life had passed them by and they were desparately clinging to what they once were, but it was painful to watch, i got up and walked out, he had turned into an angry and confused old man.

Art had a daughter who died from a fall incurred while she was under the influence of drugs. It is impossible to overstate the level of grief that arises from that. Sometimes bitterness too. Life can change people.
Bankhead looking a complete wreck....which is no surprise given her lifestyle.
I think Arlene knew the first guest immediately (Congresswoman, Mrs Neuberger) but decided to fudge her question first time around, then pounced the 2nd time.

@@FlockOfHawks Dear FoH, 100F is indeed hot! No wonder you have no need for warm furs! But up here, minus-25F temperatures are quite average, and at night even the summers are cold! The fur trappers in the community are fine indigenous people, First Peoples, who tend to refer to anti-fur meddlers as "racists" and "deranged settlers" for trying to exterminate the culture they've followed for a thousand years. I'd recommend you don't travel north of the 49th Parallel, as you probably wouldn't understand how things work outside of your own stifling hot metropolis, and you might cause hard feelings. BTW - Baby seal meat is delicious! You must try some!
