Great video! I will definately have to get one for my daughter. She is blind and loves coding and loves her Raspberry Pi. She has upgraded her Pi already to Ubuntu 21.04.
Thanks Jay, that was quite thorough, especially covering other distros on it. I said it before and I'll say it again, the elephant in the room is lack of camera & microphone. Hopefully the next version will have these built into the case. Running an SSD of some description would be a bonus - they aren't that much more expensive than an SD card and their performance whoops the arse off an SD power Pi.
This is so cool! I've been wanting a good Raspberry PI laptop for the last couple of years specifically with the plan to just replace the raspberry pi component whenever I need to upgrade the machine to better specs. I think this would be a much better idea than just having to replace the whole laptop because everything else is soldered to it. Hopefully this means we're getting closer to that day!
@@MatrixMaverick1980 Yes but can I upgrade the CPU / GPU in that every year until the heat death of the universe? The idea with the Pi laptop is that you could just remove the pi and put the newest version in. Might just need to get new cables for it to fit
@@camerontgore It is produced in batched, so it's not always available to buy. Only every couple of months. Check pine64.com. "The fan runs all the time." Well, it IS a RPi 4 after all. I was concerned you were sealing it up in a box. I'm surprised the aren't 2 fans. To be able to use a 'touch' version of Linux and of course your glowing review of RetroPi are the biggest plusses I see. Sure, let your kid learn on this. Anything they learn here is fully transferable to any other Linux or Unix-based operating system (which nowadays is everything except Windows). I don't think you mentioned the price, but this seems like an ideal setup for a number of uses. It's the Perfect RPi 4 case!!
There needs to be a raspad 4 using the CM4 and this should make the raspad even thinner and is can be upgraded with an nvme with 250 GB ssd and not worry about the sd card reliability.
I like the practicality (interface ports, internal access, repairability) and the fact that it is running Linux (so you are in full control of your property, unlike Android/iOS tablets). But, for me it should be cheaper and/or higher quality components (e.g. HD screen), and ideally remodelled to use the RPi Compute Module 4 so that the tablet can be better integrated and fit into a much smaller case. If it was no more than 1.5cm thick, using CM4, HD screen and $150 or less, then I'd be keen myself.
@@theblindprogrammer They are a non-profit foundation. That's how they manage to sell the pi4 as low as 35 dollars. It's easy to compete when you aren't trying to make profit.
hi Jay. Thank you for this video. I notice that one usb3 slot is free inside the raspad. Do you think it would be possible to boot on a usb3 stick or a mini ssd. I mean , is there enough space to plug one of these insdie the raspad?
Great video. Well explained. I am with you that having a Linux tablet with those ports would be amazing. But the cost of the case is a non-starter for me. My use case is for ham radio rig control and digital apps that run on the Pi. But maybe I would get a raspad for personal use. For tablets I like the keyboard that connnects directly to my iPad Air3. No Bluetooth or batteries to worry about. Great video and thanks for teaching your son the possibilities with all that tech. All the best!
Aloha ! Goodd video. I like the pros & cons @ the end. The fan would be bothersome to me, however i am using a $10 passive cooling case and i saw my problem solved. The thickness should be a problem and i easily unplug the fan or shut off in Pi config. I like the i/p of RasPad vs iPad/others, you correct, this is my RasPad and the fun / enjoyment connot be replicated on 10 in convertible laptop/ tablets. Mahalo ! Amazon Canada has a $30 reduction on price = $260cdn
You really don't need a stand of you leave auto rotation on. Or enable it in retro pi and then turn your raspad upside down and use the wiDe edge which would normally be the top as the base and allow the raspad to stand up on it. Hook up your controller load RetroPie and play away
@@LearnLinuxTV I hope your enjoying your raspad. i finally got mine after 3 orders. first 2 came up missing in transport. Just opened the box tonight hope to install the pi 4 tomorrow.

Someone should make one of those based off of the Raspberry Pi 400 board. Or anything that's slimmer than a full Pi 4 model B, though those would be less powerful. Thanks for the video! What do you usually use the Pi for? security cams or...
You could technically add it inside the case or attach it to the USB ports on the side
They could make it thinner and look more like a regular tablet if they use the CM4.
Looking at the prices on a new Raspberry Pi I am wondering how long people will be buying them. They were cheap when I bought the two I have.
