Memories of the best South Philly-based stringbands coming down "2 Street", right by my junior high school - Furness. They were great years for this 78 year old.
the best, this is the way it should be! how i miss it. hate the new crap with the damn theatrics, awful. go guys, strut your stuff!!! great music, great marching.
GREAT music! VERY GOOD Marching! BUT ridiculous costumes!! My wife majored in Textiles & Clothing at a major university. She has some marvelous ideas for "updating" those incredibly gaudy outfits! (e.g. two basic, complementary colors with a third "flair" color as trim, etc. Problem: Wherever could the old costumes ever be sold? Some thrift shops in Third World economies? Ha!
No, they are at the Mummers Museum, and to be honest, I miss the old uniforms with the huge back pieces with feathers, sequins, and mirrors. You take care and come and see them in person on New Year's Day in Philadelphia!
@kenwielk1799 it's true, and it's a shame that the clubs can't do it like they used it because of money, members, lack of interest, etc. I wore a back piece once, and boy, it was heavy. I can understand why some guys died of heart attacks marching up Broad Street. But they were so beautiful in those days. You take care 🙂
This is a great form of entertainment! Wish I could see them live. Fantastic!
Come to Philadelphia on New Year's Day, and you can! We've been strutting up and down Broad Street since 1901! It's a great time!
Love the silliness of it. Great fun!
This piece of surreal joy needs wider appreciation.
Fralinger---It doesn't get better than this!
Brings back great memories of this 80 year old.
Thank you.

Fralinger
where does the word "mummer" come from?
It comes from 18th Century England.
Came in 5th because no one likes clowns! No more clowns
Why are they no females in all bandd
There are bands that have females; Hegeman, Pennsport and Duffy are a few of them.
... And Ferko!
Traditionally, it was a "men's club". Still great
