The marble mortar and pestle is the bomb. Granite has the advantages of rough surfaces, which helps with grinding, but I feel like they’re much harder to clean. The big Mexican standard one, the mocajete, is granite, and it is much loved, so who knows? But I’m with you, Berta, I love my marble one.

Hi Berta! mortar and pestle is such a good idea. I’ve read that whole herbs and seeds keep longer than ground, like flax seed and cumin. I love the smell of fresh herbs. Rosemary and basil being my favorites. Potato mashers are also good for making refried beans. Thanks for another informative video! ~ Maggie 😎

It's always soooo good to see you, Berta Jay. I bought my marble mortar and pestle on Amazon in July of last year for $11.02. The very same one is now $19.03. I also have the very same tongs you have and use them a LOT. I love the lock and pop feature of them. Lastly, I have the old style wire potato masher though I rarely use it these days. My son uses a ricer and he makes the best garlic mashed potatoes for the holidays.

I had a client that taught me to use a potato masher to make egg salad. She didn’t like the chunks of egg so she mashed it up. Worked great. Thank you for another great video.

Hi 👋 Berta Jay I am new to your channel as of today.
I own 3 mortar and pestle. 1 wood, 1 ceramic and 1 marble. The marble is strongest of them all. ❤❤❤

I want to brag! I have all three of these essentials, and I even have the very kind you're recommending. I would feel really proud, except that right now my mortar & pestle is filled with little "this 'n that" stuff (small screws of unknown origin, paper clips, & the like that I find around when cleaning & don't just want to throw away.) Will try to do better. On another matter, that yellow shirt you're wearing is a gorgeous shade! Would you mind sharing the brand? It's a beautiful color to wear for spring - even if I'm only dressing to walk around the block with my dog. There WILL come a time when we're able to expand our activities. In the meantime, I hope this find you & all you hold dear in a very safe & healthy mode. Big hugs & thanks to you, Elyse

Hi Berta Jay! I enjoyed this video; thank you! I currently have the zig zag masher that I don't use much because there's too much space in between the "zags"! 😀 I need the kind you have! I hope you and yours are all doing well! 🌷🌸🌺

Thanks so much for your comment, June. I know exactly what you mean about your masher. The one I have costs a bit more, but I think it is well worth it because I do use it quite often. 🥰

Hey Hey Berta Jay...I have never used a mortar and pestle but shall purchase on as your right while using herbs it would bring out the flavour better than just putting them into your dish. I do have the same thongs and I have the curly potato masher but find its doesn't mash the potatoes thorough as the one you have would...Thanks Berta....from one of your troupers....

It's so nice to have one. I used rosemary because before I learned about using a mortar & pestle, years ago, I stopped using rosemary though I liked it's taste in my cooking. 🤨 But now I use it whenever I want to. It's a nice "essential" to have in your kitchen. I appreciate hearing from you, Barbara ❤️

@@jameswitte5167 Thanks so much, James. I'll have to try it though I must admit I might just stir them together to make a pb spread. What do you think of that?
I think your potato chip thing is funny.😄
I will stay safe and you do the same. Thanks, again, James. 👍🏾

Good info, Berta. As usual. I have those same tongs in my kitchen - Oxo I think - and I love mine too. As you said, very versatile. I wish I had bought the longer version of them though. Mine are 9 inches I think, and they also make an 11 or 12 inch model. I think those would have been even more versatile. I do use mine a lot - and because of the coated tips, I can even pull hot toast out of the toaster oven with them. That's when I do wish mine were a little longer though. But they still work well. I use my masher a lot too, for all the reasons you stated. Another multitasker, as Alton Brown would say. One tool that can serve many purposes. Hope you & your family are well & staying safe & healthy. Take care & see you next week! ❤️👍😷🥕❤️

Thank you so much, Jane. We surely do think alike. My tongs the 12 inch ones are by OXO. I have had them for quite a while and I still love them. You look at Alton Brown, too. I used to when we had cable. I liked him. Thanks so much for your support. I always enjoy hearing from you. 😊 ❤️

Hey, Hey Berta Jay! Sorry I haven't been around in so long. I sure wish I would have seen this video about two months ago. I got a mortar and pestle, thought I was getting a small one as that is what the reviews said. But it is larger than I really wanted. I didn't know what kind of material to get, knew I didn't want the wooden ones as I thought the same thing, it would hold the scents and such. So ended up with a granite one. Wish I would have gotten a marble one. Like the look better. But that is ok. It will still come in good use. Yep, I have tongs like that and love them. I really want a potato masher, have for a long time, just never got one. Great things to have in the kitchen for sure! Stay safe and healthy Berta!!! Hugs, Brenda

Thanks Mrs. Berta! Good information. I have all three of those . I do have a ceramic mortar and pestle too, but I like my marble one the best. You said you use non stick pans. Which brand (s) do you recommend. I know the McDougals like the the scan pan . It's pricey though! : (

Berta, I found all your information very helpful, but I have a problem with the silver and black tongs. I have them and they are only good to use on cold or warm foods. My tongs melted just a little on the tip. I now use only for salads. I really like the way they close.

    • @bertajay
      @bertajay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hadassah, the tongs I showed in the video are from OXO. I have had them for 10+ years and have not has a single problem with them melting. I have even used them once to pull a tray of roasted veggies out of the oven because I couldn't get my hand on a potholder at the time. They performed beautifully. So, I say all of that to say, check the maker. If it's OXO, you should email them and let them know. If it's another brand I really cannot vouch for them. I am so sorry. I should have mentioned the brand in the video. 🙁
      Thanks for sharing. 😊
