In the original play, basically everyone dies. There’s no Kaiju plant scenes, but it is implied Twoie takes over the world. In the original cut of the movie, they made the tragic ending bigger and flashier, which didn’t sit well with test audiences, so they caved in and made a happy ending that feels kinda weird and unsatisfying. Fun fact: mean green mother from outer space is a film original song, and god, it is a banger. It manages to capture the spirit of the musical so well.
Mean Green Mother was also written by Howard Ashman and composed by Alan Menken, the same writer and composer of the stage show! That's why it fits so seamlessly
Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy and recalled the ending being way more depressing than the final they went with lol. I'd like to think Audrey and Seymour still died and that was their "happy ending"; dead but together.
They may offer you fortune and fame, a fancy mansion in Beverly hills. But whatever they offer you, DON'T FEED THE PLANT! Da da da dun dun da da dun dun
One of my theories on why it didn't test well is that at least in the stage musical Seymour willingly through himself at the plant to try and fight it. I love mean green mother but it's also several minutes of bullying Seymour with a really slow drawn out death
You should see the director's cut of the movie (you watched the theatrical release). The ending is completely different. Audrey II eats Audrey and Seymour and an evil company gets the rights to breed Audrey II, causing his plant kind take over the world.
So they actually made the og ending where she died and and he fed her ro the plant, then they take over the world. But ppl didn't really like it so when it came out in theaters they gave it a happy ending (she gets her house somewhere that's green 😢) but because they spent so much time and money in the cool ass ending where everyone died, I'm pretty sure they put that one on DvDs So most ppl know the sad ending.
@@tygerchickchibi yeah 😭 and it breaks my heart even more bc in the happy ending they gave her the life she always dreamed of instead of dying before her wedding
Fun fact. This movie was directed by Frank Oz (the voice/puppeteer of Yoda and Bert) and the music is written by Howard Ashman who wrote all the bangers of 90s disney. Little mermaid, aladdin , beauty and the beast
We're doing this show in October, and I play the third Audrey pod as puppeteer. TOUGH job. But I love it. Also doubling as the customer. Loved this musical a long time, thrilled to do it in stage form. It's a real cult classic film.
The actress that plays Audrey is in a show called "Pushing Daises" which actually has the occasional song and is a really sweet and funny show. Although the humor is very dry and witty
Was never expecting to see this at all i did this in my highschool theatyand this movie is honestly just great they got two separate endings i never knew about
Mean Green was nominated for best original song. It was the first one to contain profanity and was performed at the Oscars by the late great Levi Stubbs. He wore a purple suit and an Audrey II was swaying in the background. If you haven’t seen it yet, please react to the musical Sweeney Todd.
Ellen Greene is the only one from the stage show to be in the movie. They just couldn’t get someone better to play Audrey than the one who originated the role!
Yeah, the dentist is a sadist who doesn't want a masochist. It defeats his purpose. Steve Martin is now the guy from _Only Murders in the Building,_ I think. :)
I was a Ronette a few years ago in a highschool production! It's such a good musical and the ronettes are based on a real girl group with the same name, they were the OG girl group in the 60's!!!
They're actually just referred to as the Urchins in the script. Each one is named after a 60s girl group though, The Crystals, The Ronettes and The Chiffons. Although when I co-directed it at college we also referred to them as The Ronettes and from what I've heard, this seems to be the most common name for them in regional/school productions
Lmao this was my first horror film! For some reason, my mom thought this was appropriate to show me when I was 7. Nearly 21 now & I still know all the songs.
Yes! I was there LAST Tuseday (live on Twitch), when Scoot reacted to it! Didn't expect he'd upload it that quickly! Imo the bad ending is my favorite! FEED US SCOOT! FEED US! 🌱
I watched this as a kid in the 80s and I loved it. I never saw the original, or the alternate ending until like 30 years later. It's the only musical I'd watch.
Oh man. Love this film. My favorite song line is the dude who kicks a fence he is in front of before belting out hard "DOWN ON SKID!" I've heard he is supposedly the actor for Audrey 2 but I couldn't find any confirmation on that.
This was a great reaction! Love this movie so much! One of the first musicals I ever saw/heard as a when I was a tween and still one of my top favourites. I know all the songs by heart
Love your reaction! If you want more horror musicals I recommend the Hatchetfield musicals by Starkid Productions! There are three stage musicals and two seasons of shorter plays done over Zoom, it’s all a series set in the same town, and it’s all free to watch on their TH-cam channel. First in the series is The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. They’ve been doing comedy musicals for 10+ years and there’s not much reaction content of their stuff so if you decide to react to them you’ll likely get swarmed by fans lmao. I’m excited to check out the rest of your channel, I’m glad I found this video!
When I saw this as a child I didn't understand the scene with the secretary. When I was an adult I realized the secretary must have had a visit from aunt flo. 😮
They call that one the happy ending, but with even one Audrey II bud surviving, I think it’s ultimately just a matter of time until the original ending might happen anyway. Well, at least, they do get some happiness before the Twoies make the world their banquet.
It's interesting to see the younger generation see this one But the original ending is so much better 😂 I feel bad they went for the happier ending, which was fine but the original ending had a LOT of special effects
i love this movie so much but ive only seen the good ending all my life so once i got older and unknowingly watched the version with the bad ending i was so shocked
One of my favorite movies as a kid in the 80s. Though one of my persistent questions is why didn't customers just go to the Chinaman who sold him the plant to begin with? ;-)
Scoot, there's one anime that is so worth of your attention - "oshi no ko" or "Idol's children/my star" is its title. it's soooo goodddddd. but you can react to the song first from this anime "Idol" by Yoasobi and see for yourself if it intrigues you 🙈
Steve Martin & Bill Murray's scene in this movie is so good, lmao. On one side you have Steve's Orin Scrivello, a str8-up sadist, deriving his pleasure from inflicting great pain on to others.. And then he meets his match in the form of Arthur Denton, a masochist who enjoys pain & suffering, almost to sexual gratification it appears at certain times during his exam.. And Orin literally can't stand it bc everyone else up until now he works on has been scared but here's Arthur, laughing, happy groping him, enjoying the experience.. It's definitely one of my favorite parts of the movie, just to see Orin completely thrown tf off his game. Lmao.. And then Seymour comes it, ALSO throws him off & he accidentally kills himself on nitrous oxide in the process..🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Smfh.. Keep killin it, my brotha..✌🏻
I promise you, tv dinners in the ‘60s and ‘70s really sucked. Looking back, they tasted more like cardboard than food. Audrey’s dreams for simple normality are very sweet, though.
Ayo! 👀 Love Moulin Rouge as a movie musical even though Sweeney Todd on stage is my favorite. There is the Tim Burton film of ST you could also watch, but I recommend totally of “Moulin Rouge!”.

“That thing needs to eat. Animals or something.” DEFINITELY the something

@@quinn9667 it looked like a TH-cam rental so I'm not surprised
Technically TWO of the three girls are from Martin! Tisha Campbell, who was Gina, Martin's Girlfriend, and Tichina Arnold was her best friend Pam!

You're playing Audrey just as much as the person voicing it.
STOP this is literally one of my favorite musicals 🙏🙏
The fact that you recognized Tichina from Everybody Hates Chris and not also Martin is crazy 🤣...Glad you enjoyed this it's one of my favorites
The actress that plays Audrey is in a show called "Pushing Daises" which actually has the occasional song and is a really sweet and funny show. Although the humor is very dry and witty

i love that your still reacting to musicals, PLEASE watch Heathers the Musical it’s so good

I think it'd be impossible to find someone else with both the speaking and singing voice!
@@J.MahargJust The film studio had considered Cyndi Lauper.
Yeah, if you can get Ellen Greene for the role, then that’s exactly what you do.
Yeah, the dentist is a sadist who doesn't want a masochist. It defeats his purpose. Steve Martin is now the guy from _Only Murders in the Building,_ I think. :)
The fact that he doesn't want a masochist proves he's NOT a sadist, just a psycho.
@@legionairebThanks for the clarification.
OH SNAP! One of my all time favorite movies. This movie was a big part of my childhood.
Still laughing at the dentist song all these years later 😂😂😂

Seymour is more complicit in the play. He has a whole song about his inaaction with thr dentist, and he sets a trap for Mushnik
I watched this as a kid in the 80s and I loved it. I never saw the original, or the alternate ending until like 30 years later. It's the only musical I'd watch.
This was the 80s peak consumerism and this movie was all about it.
A fun detail, he feeds Orin to Audree 2 and it makes him laugh like crazy because of all the laughing gas
I WASN'T READY FOR THIS. I JUST OPENED THE APP AND MY FAVORITE REACTOR IS WATCHING MY FAVORITE MOVIE?!?!?!?

Bill Murray's cameo was hilarious!!!!! OMG!!!

He's not an NPC (first customer). He is Christopher Guest, who was in This Is Spinal Tap.

For a future musical you should totally check out Ride the Cyclone! It's a bloody banger musical and has a great story.
