You're due in a week?! Eeek! Little Reis baby is a-comin'! I love how the Harry Potter books have their own story in each segment but that there is still an overall story that is continued on with each book :)
Hi Brooke, I just found your TH-cam channel through this comment - can't wait to work my way through your videos. I was wondering if you would be interested in being a beta reader for my middle grade fantasy novel? It's about Pepper Poppins, a teen outcast whose quest to prove herself ordinary is derailed when she finds herself torn between protecting her town and keeping a dark secret hidden. If you're interested, please email me at lauren.elyse@live.com.au :)
I have a general idea of the next three books in my series, an outline of my current book, and a detailed outline of the next two chapters. 50% each way, I think.
I actually had a lot of ideas that i didn’t think would go together, but i’ve actually found ways to slightly tweak them and get ones that had nothing to do with each other to fit.
I’m like a total pantser. I try to plan my writing, cuz that’s what everyone says to do, but I either give up and don’t do an outline or I do an outline then completely go off of it while I write. This was a problem when we did narrative writing in my writing class because the teacher always wanted me to use a story outline thing, and it was like a triangle that had the beginning, rising action, climax, falling action, and then resolution. It drove me crazy because I couldn’t fit anything in the format and I never truly had a plan plus I could never tell exactly where in my story was the climax. I still don’t know where the climax is, but oh well.
I'm writing a fantasy series. Two trilogies and a prequel. I've been doing insanely detailed plans and outlines - the prequel outline is about 20,000 words and the outlines for the rest are between 45,000 and 65,000 words so far. And I'm glad they have been so detailed, many times I have come up with an idea in book 3 or 4 and had to go back to adjust something in Book 1.
I've been waiting for this video. I'm in the process of planning my series. I'm a plotter, unfortunately. I have to make sure I have everything in place before I begin writing. I have to know all the hows, whys, and whereforarthous of my whole story before starting. My Scrivener binder is all set up and for me that's a huge feat all on its own. Can hardly wait for the "bible" video. Thanks again so much Vivien for all you do for us writers...some of us more hapless than others. One question I have: Is it okay to write the entire story then separate it out into the individual books? #HappyWriter
I am an Uber Plotter and love planning and outlining whole series, and I still learned so much! "Raising the stakes" is something I Def need to work on. And 1 week(ish)! 👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻 Early Congrats 💐💐💐 praying everything will go smoothly ❤️
Definitely needed this, thank you!!!! I’ve mentioned that I am working on a Dark Fantasy series and I definitely need to create a clearer plan for it. I have a brief little outline for each book but I need to beef them up. Thank you so much for another great video!!! #HappyWriter
Eyyyy! Writer here! I'm 13, and yes, writing a series is hard. I started at age 11. ^^. As long as you have the motivation and you have the plot down, you've got this!
Amazing tips. The one about pacing your different novels by looking at the different major shifts particularly helped me out the most. As I have been struggling with how to break up a larger series I’ve been working on. Thank you.
Some of these tips came naturally for me for one of my series ideas, but I can;t see the end of that one too clearly, so it's just hanging for now. I work on it from time to time but it's so frustrating I still can't find the end. And for some reason I'm struggling in general to do full outlines with another 2 series so some of these tips will be super helpful. Adding this to my future reference playlist to rewatch over and over til my brain's not mush. Great vid! Thanks. Goodluck w/upcoming birth! I really hope it goes as smoothly as possible. :D
I left my juvenile/YA book open so that it can be the end and readers can use their imagination to future stories or I can write the next book in any time and any place. My other book is poetry (lyrics and short poems). My next book is at the book designer's now. It's free verse. I hope it will do well. As far as doing series, well, I just don't have the focus. I'm constantly interrupted by things around me. Continuity can be hard to keep up with. I think it's a good idea to have the series written (especially if it's like a trilogy). I began writing a YA gothic recently. I hope I can finish it. It will be a stand-alone though. I do have notes and a basic outline when I write but I mostly just wing it. I guess I mostly a pantser if that's how you say it. I like to take bits from people I know and put them in the characters. I just had a toxic relationship end recently so I'm going to see what bits I can use from that person for this gothic story I hope I finish.
This is so helpful! I’m working on my first novel and I randomly got some ideas of how I could turn it into a trilogy but wasn’t sure if I should! Thanks for sharing some helpful tips!
Pantser, my series is predetermined and I discover more as I go further long the trail. If I plot, I'm derailed and thrown into the curb. 8 books with 40k. Originally the first draft has the objective, but there were too many characters and goals. So I've divided to 5, danger exposes more while the other characters are being understood and introduced with their backstory. Beyond that point, it's real dark real quick.
Gotta watch this late and hope it helps. I got an idea for a series but only got and idea for two of their adventures, having difficulty coming up with ideas to continue further but the pieces are there
Might be too late, but if you still struggling or stuck. Think of it this way one adventure could have more to it. Revealing all those extra details could be in sequels e.g. They go on adventure and are kidnapped. Book 1 could be a all about prepping up for trip, and building up to it. Act book one could be the trip and and 3 book one. Main character gets kidnapped. Book 2 could be everyone related to main character is panicking. Why did it happen? Act 1 book 2 panic and frenzy. Act 2 book 2. Search for answers. Act 3 boom 2. Bigger forces at play here. Book 3 act 1 shock and panic trying to get main character back. Book 3 act 2 not what it seemed at all. Book 3 act 3 you were killed but learn why... In all honesty sometimes it might seem like you have more material for more books but upon closer a ming and inspection. 3 books are the perfect formula but it's all dependent on your story. I like trilogies because they feel just about right and also quintets are always fun
I’m definitely a plotter. It helps me make sure the story flows, I’m outlining right now and my original idea for book 1 works better switched with another.
Don't have a author website, but I have planned out my entire series. I have an overall plot, but I see what you mean about making each book satisfying in itself to read. I have a hard time writing villains, always have so, I kind of don't have one, just a ongoing struggle. But perhaps I can add a little more risk and danger. Thank you, saving this video to watch again.
I found this very useful, but I was happy to say that I was covering most of the bases you mentioned. I'll relate one fun piece of feedback I received from some beta readers that touches on your resolution point. Near the end of the first book I wrap up the first stage of a budding romance, but I also stick in a HUGE piece of foreshadowing. In the feedback the readers didn't even notice the foreshadowing, because for them it was all about the kiss. In fact, since I was focused on the foreshadowing, the feedback was to go back and make it more about the kiss. I called it a win.
#happywriting Great video, thanks, Vivian! I am definitely a plotter, and I will be referring back to this video(and your next one) when I get to finally outlining my seven book series. While I don't know every fantasy book out there, I feel like my format and my structure might differ than the normal. Instead of following one character throughout the series, several books will follow a different character on their adventure, then book 6 will bring them all together, a la Avengers style.
This is definitely the video I've been reading right now, thank you! I'm currently writing a novel but I feel like I need to create a deeper plan for the rest of the series. Thanks for the tips! #HappyWriter

One way to leave room for character development is to make sure their past is not happy go lucky. It needs to be sordid so you have something to refer to when a character must face certain minor obstacles that will lead to their growth. The sordid details of their past will cause them to trip and stumble or freeze in their tracks as they now face something that reminds them of a time when they first encountered the thing. Perhaps they have outstanding debt that they neglected to pay. Now, they have the opportunity to make a big purchase but signs seem to be telling them to make the responsible choice and pay off their debt. Let the reader know that there are nagging things lingering in your character's head. #happywriter
I learned alot of this video and Will surtenly use all the tips! I only had one question what if your story (overarcing the serie) is not about the same characters but the same world or (big) element in the novel, would it be fun for the readers if the novels (exept the first one) aren't in order, so they could piece it together by elements in the background of these different characters stories? Or would that be to disorianting for the reader?

Huh. I'm currently writing book 4 and haven't outlined the series. I know how it ends, I just work my way there with each book. I didn't even outline the first two books. Maybe I'll get on that after I finish this book. #HappyWriter
That's so cool! How long did it take you to write the 4 books? I just started writing myself, just for fun and my own amusement, but already it feels like it's just growing and sort of taking on a life of it's own. Granted, very early days, but it's great fun! :D
Great video. I would like to point out that The Half-Blood Prince is a setup book and it's still compelling. So you *can* do a setup book, if you do it well. But when you look at the movie adaptation, clearly the filmmakers couldn't tell what was important, and they put the focus on the wrong things, cutting out important elements; and I think that was because it was a steup book with a weird structure and no real main plot.
Personally, I've seen writers do this with the "sneak peek" section AFTER the satisfying ending of the first book. It's sorta like, "are you sure you wanna know about the next book? are you prepared to sit on this question/cliffhanger for the next few days (or months) until you can get your hands on the next book? Yes!? Well okay you asked for it--" then BOOM continuation right where you left off into that cliffhanger you wanted!! That's my suggestion. Rather than disturbing the reader who just wanted to have a satisfying ending, this way now you've placed the cliffhanger in their own hands and it keeps the reader from feeling cheated out of that satisfying ending they wanted. Remember, books are an investment for your reader, not only of their time, but of their emotions as well. #Happywriter I've been plotting a huge series since I was very young but I have never committed to writing for a variety of reasons. Fear of losing my phone/book which has happened before both times plus I felt my writing was repetitive I just started watching your channel and hope I can be helped by you

Hi Vivien! I have a question? What if my first book ends with a super cliffhanger? I mean, it NEEDS to be a second book.... can I do that? Thanks!
I generally choose to not outline my book, although with the series idea I'm working on I'm definitely outlining so I don't cause a huge plothole later in the story
Can I make the first draft of book one then PLAN BOOKS 2 and 3
I have a book idea and wondering if it'll work as a series. Now, if my computer will quit buffering so I can listen .....
I'm a plancer and find it good to make general outlines for my novels and series #Happywriter

I've been plotting a huge series since I was very young but I have never committed to writing for a variety of reasons. Fear of losing my phone/book which has happened before both times plus I felt my writing was repetitive
I just started watching your channel and hope I can be helped by you
I'm a huge plotter, so I've outlined all 6 books before writing any! xD #happywriter
I plan on plotting about 10 children’s picture books this month so I can get at least 3-5 written during NaNoWriMo.
Love this video! Thanks for making it! #happywriter

I can’t write a novel without adding a series! I just don’t like when things just end at one book.
