Hey guys I am a French cinema fan and the Parasite poster was a joke the french producers did online :) But it wasn't the main poster ! It came out a couple of weeks later

I have a conspiracy theory that the redesign fiasco was a publicity stunt. The cringey, nightmare fuel first trailer did attract a LOT of attention, and then promising to "redesign" Sonic getting a lot of goodwill.
It's a kids film, one person interested equals 2 tickets sold, compared to an R-rated movie whose main character appeals mostly to teenagers, you can kinda see it
It's not just for kids, it is also currently the only new kid-friendly movie out. If you decide to go to the cinema with your family this weekend, you either watch jumanji or, if you have already seen it (which is likely at this point) Sonic is it.
Sonic has a muuuuch bigger audience that can actually go to see it. Plus, being aimed at kids more, it means you don't just have 'the person (child) wanting to see the film' but also at least one adult or older sibling etc accompanying them so the ticket sales are going to be higher than a film where older teens, say, can go on their own. Plus adults going to see the film first to check it is suitable and then taking their family.
On this week’s episode of Charting with Dan: Was ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ able to *DASH* its way to #1? Is ‘Birds of Prey’ still not taking *FLIGHT* towards box office success? Did ’The Photograph’ take a *SNAPSHOT* of box office success this weekend? Is ‘Bad Boys for Life’ still *BLOWING UP* the box offce? Hi, I’m Dan Murrell and I’m Lon Harris. and this is ‘Charting with Dan’ on Fandom Entertainment!
The real question about BoP: what's the real cost (marketting included)? Apparently, it's about $220,000. If that's true, the movie may not break even.
I'm guessing that whoever is running Exhibitor Relations' Twitter account has a personal ax to grind. I can't imagine that being signed off by a higher-up. And when I hear "since 1974" for a company whose business model doesn't rely on marketing itself to the general public, I don't see a company that really cares about social media.
This is the reason I come here. While he sometimes lays little passive aggressive nuggets on movies he doesn't like, his numbers, charts and sources are solid. Top respect for Dan.
Just wanna let you know about two things you guys got wrong: - « Portrait » was released in 22 theatres (making its per theatre average much more impressive) - The poster for Parasite is indeed a French poster but it is absolutely not the one used to promote the film. That poster wasn’t used to market the film, nor was it present in any French movie theatre. It was a stunt poster, basically a joke, aimed at making the film look like a typical feel-good studio French comedy. If you compare this poster to those of Nicky Larson, Welcome to the Sticks, Inséparables etc, you can see the influence. Clearly you found the humour of the poster, but now you know that it was intentional down to the cheesy tagline.
That "sexism" tweet was so misguided. Any DC movie would have had way more anticipation than Ford v Ferrari, so of course more was expected out of BoP. And that weekend drop was incredibly dishonest.
They also didn't seem to realize that despite all the mocking it gets, Sonic does have a passionate and dedicated fanbase. While Sonic might not be the most relevant currently, it has a sizeable consistent following.
@@incognito6033 Oh for sure! I'm not denying the power of the redesign (That's the main reason I went to see it). I don't recall seeing much advertising for the power ranger movie, which probably didn't help it, while the original design of Sonic kept it in the public light for months. That said, I did get 5 friends to come with me to see the movie because they grew up Sonic fans, not necessarily because they cared about the redesign. Combine that with the Cartoon Network show and a annual/bi-annual game, there's a constant revolving door of new and old fans. Honestly, the Sonic movie had the perfect storm to get people in the seats.
Loved the after-class/extra credit on BoP. I think there needs to be more analysis on quasi-sequels following critically panned films. The reaction to SS did no favors for BoP. Ala, X3 and X-Men Origins Wolverine did no favors for First Class and The Wolverine
This is the video I have been waiting for all day. I want to hear about the Sonic box office and also hear about how Jumanji: The Next Level didnt drop but actually had a boost.
THE RHYTHM SECTION went from 3049 theatres to 94, and it still only averaged $49 per theatre on Monday. Surely it's setting all kinds of wrong records now?
This is one of those rare times in which I'm incredibly proud to be a Sonic fan. He's been through rough tides but hopefully he'll return to true prominence and leave Mario in the dust.
Dan picked the Japanese poster for Sonic for the International Chart, clearly showing the March 27th opening date here in Japan. Rubbing a little salt in the wound of Japanese Sonic fans who have to wait another month for the movie... :)
Well Witcher doing well on Netflix but maybe in another way- can't see Netflix numbers but Witcher 3 Wild Hunt has gone up 542% in sales since release of series.
But it was presidents day... not really a huge day for the box office. Besides Black Panther there haven't been any blockbusters released on presidents day. Plus, February has been known for being a slow month for cinema (not as bad as January, but still).
Sonic Mania along with DLC came out not THAT long ago. Its a fantastic Sonic game. In fact is on sale on Steam right now thanks to Sonic coming out. You should pick it up.
@@marcusdriskell the best part, "Friends" the intro from Mania is the track that plays during the opening sequence. It is marvelous 😍🎼 and the movie is fantastic
I think the cartoon on Sonic really helped push the movie. The show on CW was pretty solid as far as children's cartoons go. It got dark at times too allot of friends I know kinda got introduced to anime through Sonic.
I cant speak for everyone but I think the goodwill from Sonic's redesign had to have helped it. Me and my son went out and saw it Thursday for its opening showing and part of the reason I wanted to make a point to get out and support it was because of the extra effort/money they put into fixing Sonic.
That's a similar reason to why I bought tickets. These properties wouldn't even make it to the big screen w/o the fans supporting it from the start so the fact that they listened to the fans feedback convinced me to buy tickets to support their choice. Glad there's so much love for the movie and seeing the cast's + director thanking the fans for their support is super wholesome.
had been thinking that this will be a new marketing technique wherein the studios release a trailer with some sort of built in controversial element that gets people riled up, they hear about it, "correct" it. then collect the good will of the public at the BO.
I was one of the people who saw Birds of Prey this past weekend exactly because word of mouth. Very much enjoyed it! Definitely one of the better offerings from DC.
Come on guys, Sonic is a very relevant character today...just look at Sonic Mania. Released over 2017-2018, sold multiple millions of copies, and scored 9/10’s from basically every outlet. *not a furry.
brent house yeah but to the average consumer Sonic just isn't that big of an Ip, Gamers and kids dragging their parents to the theater is the reason for its success. The kiddos loved it and it was just ok to me, I'm just gald a video game movie is actually doing well so we can get some of these major games movies made
I saw BOP today & really liked it. I think it was mismarketed but a good movie nonetheless. I think it’s gonna be close but I do believe it’ll end up being a profitable film
Also Ford v Ferrari and Birds of Prey were made for VERY different reasons. Ford v Ferrari was meant to be an awards player and while it didn't go the way they probably wanted it, it got some nominations and wins. Birds of Prey is a studio franchise that is not going for any big awards, it might get some craft/technical categories but that's not why it was made - it was made to make the studio money and it dissapointed
I have missed one or two episodes over the past month of SJU, but I don't think I've heard any commentary on "Weathering with You". I know you've mentioned before that Anime isn't your target audience, nor something you have a lot of experience in discussing. But it would but nice to hear mention if any of the cast has seen the film? I assume Danielle might have or Joe? Love you guys, just feel that Shinkai's last work, "Your Name" had more discussion.
Wayne yeah but that was because Your Name ended up being the most successful anime movie of all time even surpassing classics like the top Studio Ghibli movies! With Weathering With You there hasn‘t been such a buzz around it and I think less of a hype? Just the fact that anime movies get released over a year later in the west than in Japan and other Asian countries is also part of the „problem“ I think..
Yeah, Weathering simply didn't have the same word-of-mouth. It has made more money domestically than Your Name, but the buzz around it wasn't simply big enough to get mentioned. It opened on the Jan 17 weekend so it didn't even have the highest per-theater average because of Bad Boys. It's a shame, because it did break records for its distributor, and is already the highest non-franchise non-Ghibli anime movie. (As for has anyone in the cast seen it, Dan did include YN in his 2010s movie supercut so I'd assume that he's at least aware of Weathering.)
I was bummed out because I was going to have to wait until Tuesday to get my Charting, but I knew it would be worth it. Dan and Lon did not disappoint with their balanced presentation of the numbers and call for all of us to do our research and analyze context in every situation! I'm glad I waited until tonight to watch it since Tuesday ended up being hectic. Also on the plus side, the next episode is that much closer now!
I legitimately think that the Jim Carrey draw was also a real thing for the Sonic movie. Jim Carrey, at least to me, fell off the map. the marketing for Sonic honestly made me want to see it (I haven’t) simply because Jim Carrey also looked like vintage Jim Carrey and that was a big draw for a 90s kid like I. And that’s what I get for commenting before the video is over.. Lon brings up my point just as I type it.
Patrick Harden Ive never thought about that, I know with matinee prices adults and children tickets are about the same but General admission would be $3.50 more than a child's ticket
@@BeyondVertical101 It came to mind when he was charting the video game movies. Some of those are more kid-friendly than others. I'd expect a higher percentage of kids at Sonic or Detective Pikachu than Tomb Raider or Mortal Combat, for instance.
Patrick Harden - that’s a good question. I hope he answers. More recent films may separate kids seats/tickets and adult seats. But I don’t see (and I may be wrong) that films pre mid-2000s doing that. But would the ticket cost really matter when it comes to actual number of tickets sold? Unless you’re asking about adult tickets and not the ticket cost (for the BITS part only)?
@@Whizkidd2025 It depends on how BITS is being calculated. If they are taking the total BO and dividing it by the "average ticket cost at the time" then a movie with all adults would benefit from that because no kids tickets were sold. On the other hand, a kids movie where there is a 1:3 ratio for adults to kids would not benefit because more of those tickets for that movie were at kid rates, not adults.
Patrick Harden - that’s a valid point. I didn’t think about it like that. I know nowadays tickets sold is the actual number (since the figure matters) but in the past? it could be box office and average ticket price. Let me see if I can find this online.
I imagine one day 60 years from now the "Charting with Dan" company will say something biased in a box office analysis and an indi reporter will point it out.
As someone literally with Analyst in their job title, there's no defense for the shoddiness of that tweet. It's the sort of things proper analysts hate - twisting facts outside of appropriate context to suit a pre-defined decision or message.
Are we going to totally ignore that the BoP box office is about five times smaller than Suicide Squad? The way some people are reporting numbers is weird, but it's not hard to just look at the last movie Harley Quinn was in and see that things are looking extremely grim.
I think you guys aren't aware that a big part of Sonic's current success can be attributed to his constant online presence driven by a great deal of fan-made animation, fan-made video games, etc. and yes, being added to Super Smash Bros. This has helped to keep Sonic in the public conscience and staying relevant.
Sonic is truly an underdog story because I’m with you guys, I was 100% certain this movie was going to just completely bomb. It had just everything going against it. But it defied the odds and made tons of money and people really seem to like it. It’s nice to be pleasantly surprised by how this has turned out! I’m glad I was wrong because paramount and those poor graphic designers needed a fucking win.
I don't get how even a couple of days before opening, people were projecting Birds of Prey that high. I checked several theaters in my area for 9pm Saturday showings and the most I saw was one theater with 14 tickets sold and that was on the Wednesday before opening.
I have a 6 and 7 year old, and their TWO favorite shows right now are Sonic BOOM and Sonic X.. both on Hulu (and maybe elsewhere)... Sonic BOOM is actually quite good, even as an adult. Pretty funny. So, it’s not just the video games. The cartoons are doing rather well too! That’s what is making them go crazy over seeing this movie
Apparently, your choice of international posters for Sonic, which is the Japanese poster, says it doesn't even open until the end of next month in Japan.
28:27 That alternate poster for Parasite gives me Deadpool vibes, framing the vulgar action movie as a romance film you need to see on Valentine's Day vs making the dark, satirical prestige film look like a sitcom.
It's a travesty that Call Of The Wild is a major cinematic release while Togo gets buried on Disney+. If you want to watch an old man with a dog in the snow, watch Togo, if you can. I found old man Lon getting angry about The Babadook both hilarious & very relatable.
I am a fan of Billie Eilish's music, but I am just as irrationally disturbed as Lon was regarding Ms. Eilish's fav movie growing up being The Babadook (2014).
Not bad, I must say I was completely sceptical about the Sonic Movie, but it has proven me wrong. I'm glad Game Movies are doing better than the usual status quo.
I'd agree, "A Savy move for Jim Carrey", but because, as he's said, he did the movie for his (Sonic loving) daughter. And being a good father is always a good (savy) move. As always thank you so very much Dan, Lon, and associates, for the excellent and informative video.

Where can I get one of those "Big Trouble in Little China" t-shirts?
I imagine one day 60 years from now the "Charting with Dan" company will say something biased in a box office analysis and an indi reporter will point it out.
I love this ♡ call out misleading numbers ♡
We love Lon and Dan!
As someone literally with Analyst in their job title, there's no defense for the shoddiness of that tweet. It's the sort of things proper analysts hate - twisting facts outside of appropriate context to suit a pre-defined decision or message.
I love Dan schooling people on their box office reporting
Dan said we're not twisting numbers to fit a predisposed narrative and thats on PERIOD!!!!!!
Are we going to totally ignore that the BoP box office is about five times smaller than Suicide Squad?
The way some people are reporting numbers is weird, but it's not hard to just look at the last movie Harley Quinn was in and see that things are looking extremely grim.
“You know this show, you know me, you know I’m a dork”
We love you, Dan! Never change! #bits #legs
I think you guys aren't aware that a big part of Sonic's current success can be attributed to his constant online presence driven by a great deal of fan-made animation, fan-made video games, etc. and yes, being added to Super Smash Bros. This has helped to keep Sonic in the public conscience and staying relevant.
Is it weird that I think it should be called charting with Dan and Lon?
That Parasite poster is deceiving. Wonderful!
I appreciate your thoroughness Dan!!
"My favourite movie growing up was Avengers Endgame" HAHAHA LON is a king
oh dan, if you're going to correct every single bad report on twitter, you will never stop!
I live for this show and Dan's diplomatic explanations!
Apparently, your choice of international posters for Sonic, which is the Japanese poster, says it doesn't even open until the end of next month in Japan.
I've never forgotten Mortal Kombat...... it's a great movie. That song is iconic. Only the first movie.
I love that they use international posters. That Parasite poster is one of the reasons why.
Thank you Dan! I actually enjoyed The Boy as well. Very interesting twist!

That alternate poster for Parasite gives me Deadpool vibes, framing the vulgar action movie as a romance film you need to see on Valentine's Day vs making the dark, satirical prestige film look like a sitcom.
Fantasy Island may be an awful film, but (I think) that is actually a GREAT poster.
Just saw Sonic tonight! What I loved more than anything was how many dads brought their kids. They were so stoked to pass Sonic on to them.
I saw a couple little kids with Sonic plushies at the showing I went to. Everything about that is so wholesome.
It's a travesty that Call Of The Wild is a major cinematic release while Togo gets buried on Disney+. If you want to watch an old man with a dog in the snow, watch Togo, if you can. I found old man Lon getting angry about The Babadook both hilarious & very relatable.
Dan again doing the lord's work.
6:00: Owen Wilson has entered the chat 🤣🤣🤣
Harrison Ford: “There was money involved”
I am a fan of Billie Eilish's music, but I am just as irrationally disturbed as Lon was regarding Ms. Eilish's fav movie growing up being The Babadook (2014).
We are legion
J Robs If TV show I dropped out early in season 2, if 2010 movie, Paul Bettany was great, if a noun well you have got me there. 😉
Not bad, I must say I was completely sceptical about the Sonic Movie, but it has proven me wrong. I'm glad Game Movies are doing better than the usual status quo.
Black Panther II is moving to the prime May date for Marvel movies in 2022, so I don't know what could ever top the President's Day record.
I'd agree, "A Savy move for Jim Carrey", but because, as he's said, he did the movie for his (Sonic loving) daughter. And being a good father is always a good (savy) move.
As always thank you so very much Dan, Lon, and associates, for the excellent and informative video.
