Hello Ms. Maha Maven, thank you for taking the time out to make this very informative video. It is really encouraging to see a black woman giving advice about the process. I wish you the best throughout your law school journey ❤️🇳🇬🤗
Do a video for young high school students that want to attend law school. What’s the path high school students should take in order to exceed in law school?
I’m still an undergrad but I’ve been doing HELLA research on this stuff. One thing I would DEFINITELY say is try to get some leadership experience and be dedicated to at least one school organization or club. That’s something I really wish I did in high school. Also, please PLEASE take your grades seriously, I also wish I did that, too. In college, I would highly suggest NOT majoring in pre-law. That really doesn’t help you that much for law school. Your major doesn’t matter TOO much (unless you wanna be a patent lawyer, in which case a STEM major is pretty recommended) but you need to make sure you take classes that have a lot of writing involved, like philosophy and writing classes, for example. Make sure you take classes that teach you logic, as well. Mostly, at least for me, the thing I wish I would’ve done in high school to prepare me better for the law school application process is just make sure you stay dedicated to school and try to be as involved as you can!!
Thank you for posting this. I have been stuck on my personal statement essay for awhile and listening to your video helped me understand how to better lay out and explain the continuity of my life experiences. Again, many thanks! Side note: you are a wonderfully articulate public speaker!
Hi there, I'm attending law school in Canada (I had to take the LSAT too)! People study for the LSAT in all kinds of ways, there are courses you can take in person or online or you can buy books and self-study. I took an in person course which I found helpful, but I did that because I knew that's how I learn best. Khan Academy has a free course you can take and many people have very successfully studied on their own. There are some really popular books that keep coming up as suggestions; PowerScore Bibles are always topping lists. At the end of the day it depends on how you learn best. The absolute most important thing about studying for the LSAT is practice. The hard thing about the test is how short it is - you only have 35 minutes a section. The only way to improve your speed without compromising accuracy is getting practice. Good luck and I hope this was helpful!
Yes, I agree, try the Khan Academy FREE LSAT course online as well as other LSAT prep videos you can find on youtube for free. Take as many previously administered LSATs as possible. Good luck if you're still planning to take it!

Hi, I have some questions. Hopefully, I'll be attending law school in 2020. I'm about to begin preparing for it but I wasn't sure where to start. I don't know if you have a video on this or not. If so please point me in the direction. But in the meantime, can you explain more about the grading on a curve and did you take any prep courses for the LSAT? I'm seriously considering taking Kaplan but I'm not sure if I should or not.. Help please!!!
Hi! This is late and you've probably already applied and I'm a random law student from Canada but just in case here's some answers to your questions if you still need some guidance! (US law schools and Canadian law schools both grade on a B curve and require the LSAT - my answers might be a bit different from the American experience but it should apply.) The curve means that every course's average must be a B. At my school, a B is between 74-76%. The course average cannot be 73.9 or 76.1. This is very strictly adhered to. What this really comes down to is that you're not being graded on the objective quality of your work as much as you are being graded as compared to your classmates. The most useful way I've heard it put is this: if a professor really wants to give someone an A, someone else has to get a C. It's harsh and it's hard to beat the curve, but it's not impossible. Regarding prepping for the LSAT, I took a Princeton Review course. I found it helpful and a good way to keep me disciplined but personally I'm not sure I'd take the same course again, I'd probably go with a different company. That being said, whether or not to take a course depends a lot on how you learn and your needs. Do you need a flexible course? Something online or self-study with books might be best. Do you like the structure of a classroom environment? Go for an in person class. Financial considerations should be taken into account too - you're not only potentially paying for a course, but you'll have to pay for books, registering for the LSAT, application fees, and eventually tuition. Ultimately the most important thing is to get a ton of practice. I downloaded the 7sage app and used the proctor to run practice tests as often as possible; if I didn't have time for a full test, I'd do some timed sections instead. The only way to improve your score is practice. Good luck and I hope this was helpful! And if you've already submitted your application wishing you all the success!

I’ve been reading that going to law school and becoming a lawyer in America today is the worthless because the job market is over saturated and most people with law degrees are struggling and begging to find any work they can. Law school was my goal and exactly what I wanted to do but idk what to do anymore...
@@chloemorrison8861 you study the LSAT itself. Previous LSATs get released and you can buy them online. I think 1-2 previous exams were available for free on the LSAT website when I was studying for it. There are also in-person and online courses. And some TH-cam vids that can help. For example, they will break down questions from previous analytical reasoning sections and show how to get the correct answer. But the best way to study is by taking practice tests over and over and over again.
If you can get the good grades, go to medical school instead. I just made a video about how my former brother in law chose law over medical school, and wound up in prison.

There are so many components to the application. It just takes up a lot of time and thought. And that test--the LSAT is no joke. It's hard. I'm filing out applications now. So hard.
Polished Professionals Yes! I got my apps in for the Feb deadlines. My first choices. But I went to a law fair and decided to apply to one more school, so I'm writing a "Why X ?" statement. Also the waiting. This in between time. It's really hard.
A lot of people don’t have access to their recommendation letters, as you have to sign saying you haven’t read them. As for resumes and personal statements, they tend to be really specific to the person so I’m not sure how that would be helpful. However, there are templates online that are helpful for formatting. I have also linked a book of successful Harvard law essays.
I’ve been watching a BUNCH of these videos, and I had yet to feel as if I had learned anything new until I saw your video. Specifically when you talked about the personal statements, I felt as if someone had given me the steps I needed to figure that out! Thank you so much, girl.
I'm really curious to as what books and last schedules you would recommend? Methods? I've asked around there are very different recommendations all around
I just got into my first year of university majoring in International Development and Globalization at the University of Ottawa (Canada). And I am already stressing about the LSAT
Not much at all. Some say it may give a bump if you’re below the lower end of median, but i think the more important thing is to put your best foot forward. There are people from all over at the top law schools.
When did you start studying for the lsat and how long before applying? First generation college student here and very clueless lol thank you so much for this video
Hi! I am currently a rising junior in college. I was wondering if you review essays. Or like an overview of what could be done better. This video was really helpful though, thank you so much.
What law school do you go to? What test prep company or websites did you use? What type of law do you want to practice? How is your experience as a black women ?
dude same, im 9th, i have like 3.5 years easily before i can legally give the exam, and atleast 1 year before i should start preparing, but here i am, hanging onto every word of hers
Will schools really be able to see your bad score? The first time I ever took the LSAT I did poorly but I'm working my butt off and studying a year in advance so that I actually have a high score when I take it a second time. The thought of the two scores being averaged is terrifying.
Hi I go to high school in the UK 🇬🇧 but I’m thinking about going to law school in the US. I’m really confused because in the UK after we do our A levels (which our like your SAT’s) we go into uni and learn law. But in the US you need a degree before law school 🥴please could someone explain

There are so many components to the application. It just takes up a lot of time and thought. And that test--the LSAT is no joke. It's hard. I'm filing out applications now. So hard.
Are you finding the application process exhausting?
Polished Professionals Yes! I got my apps in for the Feb deadlines. My first choices. But I went to a law fair and decided to apply to one more school, so I'm writing a "Why X ?" statement. Also the waiting. This in between time. It's really hard.
Ellen Henderson what are the extracurriculars you picked??
I really wish people could upload their letter of recommendations or CV or personal statements to give the best examples and guidance
Med schools do have prerequisite such as taking bio and chem but you can still major in what you want
excellent lecture
I'm really curious to as what books and last schedules you would recommend? Methods? I've asked around there are very different recommendations all around
Will cover this in a future video
I’m taking a class called critical thinking which is preparing me for LSAT
It's sad that they have to teach a class in critical thinking but they do.
@@THE-id1by what’s your thoughts about ppl taking the course? You think it’s a bright idea
@@THE-id1by no response? okay then shut the fuck up and stop trying to sound smart lol dumbass
I just got into my first year of university majoring in International Development and Globalization at the University of Ottawa (Canada). And I am already stressing about the LSAT
so what is recommended is to go to an undergrad school (that lasts 4 years? not sure) and then to work in a law firm for 1-2 years?
Does going to a State University as opposed to a UC affect the chances of being accepted to an Ivy League?
Not much at all. Some say it may give a bump if you’re below the lower end of median, but i think the more important thing is to put your best foot forward. There are people from all over at the top law schools.
I think it does not make a difference just make sure you stand out.
When did you start studying for the lsat and how long before applying? First generation college student here and very clueless lol thank you so much for this video
Pretty and smart ! You rock
Make up tips please!! 😍
Hi! I am currently a rising junior in college. I was wondering if you review essays. Or like an overview of what could be done better. This video was really helpful though, thank you so much.
I don’t but working on a course, will be out soon
You're so pretty!
What law school do you go to? What test prep company or websites did you use? What type of law do you want to practice? How is your experience as a black women ?
will answer these questions in a later video. I go to Penn Law
Thanks for your video
Thank you for this
This video help but I’m in 7th going to 8th and I think I’m a lil early 😂
I think i matters in highschool you need to do all this in highschool have good grades and gpa in there
dude same, im 9th, i have like 3.5 years easily before i can legally give the exam, and atleast 1 year before i should start preparing, but here i am, hanging onto every word of hers
Will schools really be able to see your bad score? The first time I ever took the LSAT I did poorly but I'm working my butt off and studying a year in advance so that I actually have a high score when I take it a second time. The thought of the two scores being averaged is terrifying.
They can see all your scores but they only consider the highest. That’s what I’ve heard
Maha Maven thank you!
Hi I go to high school in the UK 🇬🇧 but I’m thinking about going to law school in the US. I’m really confused because in the UK after we do our A levels (which our like your SAT’s) we go into uni and learn law. But in the US you need a degree before law school 🥴please could someone explain
