Remember arriving in Tjäktja in hard wind, snow and rain. There was no available beds but mattresses were brought out for everyone so no one had to sleep outside. Everyone helped out, bringing in firewood and water, sharing meals, keeping the fire going. I have slept in many mountain huts since then but it's still one of my favorite memories.
Hey thanks for telling me! That makes me so happy because its one of my best memories from there too. Everyone was so kind and was really appreciating four walls and a roof. It seems like a lot of people thought it was a unusual but still very nice experience, me included!
At a different hut I ended up sleeping in the sauna, after it had cooled down a little bit. It was nice sleeping on top of my sleeping bag for the first half of that early September night. The hut warden made it very clear that no matter what she would find somewhere to put down a mattress and sleep for everyone.
This network of huts and the organization that owns them, and especially the people like yourself who actually physically maintain the property are an extremely worthwhile pursuit, as are all things where humans respectfully interact with nature and wilderness. It is certainly the result of incalculable work and youthful enthusiasm and I for one applaud you and your colleagues. Cheers.

Looking at this my first thought was "freedom". Its easy to romantize such an area but the work to keep it up never ends. We should appreciate the work our ancestors did to have the lives we have now.
Damn, I wanna girl who is/has been a Hut Warden. That outdoorsy-ness, the business sense, the feeling that shes domestic while also being wild. Im sold.
I have visited Sweden a number of times in the past but always in the south. I have aso travelled in Norway as far north as Trondheim and I was always struck by the beauty of both these countries. I passed by the hut in late August 2016. The days before, it had been around 18 degrees C in Kiruna, but when climbing up the pass, I was greated by a short blizzard. I took shelter in the hut on the top of the pass, and was joined by another traveller going in the opposite direction who also didn't consider it safe to continue. But after about 20 minutes, the blizzard was gone again and the valley opened up. It was an amazing experience! Thank you STF for maintaining these facilities!
In Summer 2021 I hiked Kungsleden and slept at this exact hut, washed my hair by the waterfall...there was heavy rain that day, so we were very happy to spend the night
Hey! I'm happy to hear that! Then you know all about the experience. When the weather is really bad thats when you appreciate four walls and a roof the most. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers Emma

I was at Tjäktja 2021 with a friend on our Kungsleden hike. It was a wonderful stop, and as always the hut wardens were fantastic. The weather was great, so we enjoyed a beer from the hut, spoke to the hut wardens and then continued on our way. A wonderful stop on a wonderful hike.
Sounds like a really nice memory and it seems like you were lucky since tjäktja is one of the huts which usually dosent have a shop or beer :) Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers Emma
Beautiful, reminds me of visiting that very cabin some years ago, in early summer. Completely snowed in, in fact getting there was quite hard. Yes I was happy to stay inside for the night, and for a fire in the woodstove! Even heard an avalanche the day after when going over the pass.
Hey Emma, it's really nice to see the result of your adventure and getting flashbacks of the hike thanks to those beautiful shots! It was great meeting you (as a group) at the night train and having a really warm and welcoming time. I'm sure that every single one that got to "your" hut was happy and lucky to have such hut wardens. Best, Friedrich
What scenery - absolutely amazing. You are so fortunate to do this as "work" !! My daughter lives in Helsingborg and the photos she sends me of that area are just magical. Sweden looks like an amazingly lovely country .. .. .. .. .. if you can handle the cold !! ha ha ha ha ha ha. Enjoy.
I feel very privileged! Sweden is beautiful, north to south! I'm actually from the South of sweden as well, an hour from helsingborg, and I wouldn't say its very cold down there, but I guess it depends on what you're comparing with! Thanks for watching 😁
Looks a lot like areas of Alaska I've backpacked in east of Denali park in the Talkeetna Mountains. I live in Fairbanks where we are well into winter and I was surprised when you said you had started this residency in September. Up here that is the start of winter.
Wow that sounds like a great experience as well! Yeah well beginning of september is autumn and end of september is beginning of winter kind of. I've never been in the mountains this late on the season but I will definitely come back this time because it was great! Colors on their peak, not a lot of people and wildlife everywhere!
Hey thank you so much! Yeah I feel like that is what I and we need to do more. Hope to inspire to get out and explore nature more! Really appreciate your comment! Thanks again!
Fabulous…keep up the brilliant work…I wish more of the planet was remote and devoid of human development and urbanisation….as well as all the trash and discarded plastics that go with the ever increasing population.
I wish the same! That's why this feels so meaningful for me. It has such a big impact on everyone visiting so losing more of those remote places will be bad for all of us
@@EmmaaNilss the sad fact is there are too many people on this planet making too many demands on nature and the environment and this will only get worse….celebrating the birth of the 9th billion child on earth is not something we should be proud of….it’s a recipe for disaster sadly….but what you are doing is a wonderful thing and we can’t give up hope that equilibrium in nature will prevail.
I volunteered once at a hostel in the Tatras, not this remote at all but still super close to the national park, so plenty of hiking available. We arranged it in a way we worked our 24 hours a week in 2 days so we had 5 days off to explore the mountains. It was amazing. This looks even more interesting, being quite far from civilization for an extended period of time must be really soothing.
Absolutely stunning…makes me want to be there right now. But you share the spirit of the place perfectly so I almost feel for a moment I am there. I am curious what brand of pants she’s wearing…look like a good product for hiking!
Was in tjaktja in March 2017 on a ski tour. Good to see it in summer conditions, and want to get back to trek and hill climb around there. But fetching water in winter was a real ‘chore’, going up past the bridge to the ‘famous’ deep waterhole! Hard work! But a fantastic place.
Great stuff! I had huge pangs of nostalgia for the times in the 1980s when we lived off the grid in a hut off the road, 15 miles from town, in southeastern Minnesota's Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood Forest. We carried water from the spring, not just for ourselves but also for our growing herds and flocks of livestock. (Thankfully, we eventually had access to a river for the larger stock, swine, cattle, and Norwegian Fjord Horses. Sheep in that climate do not need a whole lot of water. Poultry ditto, although ducks and geese we found were a bit wasteful of the water I carried for them.) Somehow I managed to warp the cast iron baffle in our magnificent Jøtul "Little Giant" burning hop hornbeam with the draft open. I was a newbie, but quickly understood the benefits of squatting over a double vault composting toilet, and segregating urine for compost addition. This. is. Sweden! (Although to me it looks a lot like Norway.) Swedes ought to keep Sweden, if they can. Just my opinion.
Hey im very happy to read your story! It sounds like a really cool and challenging experience! This is sweden although Norway is just around the corner so up here I totally get its looks similar. We even walked up a mountain where we could see over to Norway!
Hi Emma, what a lovely video. My partner and I camped at Tjäktja on the 4th of September this year and had a brief chat with you about your time as a hut warden. Watching the video makes me miss the hike and scenery more than I already was. Cheers from Scotland.
Hi! That makes me so happy! I miss that place too, it's really something different! Thanks for watching and might see you out there again, it's a small world after all 😋
I've read and heard a lot about the wilderness in Norway and Finland but very little about Sweden. So nice to get a chance to see your beautiful countryside. We don't have many huts with wardens here in Scotland but it makes me appreciate their work.
We do not own the hut, STF does, we just work there. We dont really go shopping, im working on a second piece covering the topic food but short answer we get to sent our food out in advance during wintertime.
I had never heard of a hut warden. my background is Swedish and Norwegian. My hubby's dna is Swedish -- but he grew up in Groningen The Netherlands. This is remote and beautiful. Do you ever see Polar Bears? This is so beautiful -- and so very quiet.
Hi! Well now you have! No, there is no polar beers here, you need to go further to the pole to be able to see them! Would be cool though. It is very beautiful and if you ever get the chace I would really recomend you to go here! Its like nothing else on this planet. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Emma
@@EmmaaNilss My memory has every other hut along the trail with sauna. And I met lots of "in between" stugvärdar som besökte de andra veckovis för att duscha och prata med andra värdar.
Great video and nice revisiting with Tjäktja and you two. I met you when I visited the cabin this autumn. Due to bad weather, many had sought shelter there, perhaps 20 more than the capacity of the cabin. Even though it was crowded and chaotic, you and Cornelius were absolutely wonderful with everyone. Best experience of all the cabins I visited 👍
Thank you for all the kind words! Im happy to hear you had a nice time in the cabin, we did too 😁 Thanks for taking your time commenting, this made my day, cheers!
I have a very special relation to this very hut. In 2020 my wife and I were hiking the Kungsleden. It was our first long hike (~450 km). We started in Hemavan and began going north towards Abisko. A few days before our goal, after we've been hiking for 4 weeks, we reached the highest point of Kungsleden. A few minutes after my wife falls and dislocate/break one of her fingers. We had no signal on our phones but we had a Garmin inReach mini (satellite communicator that can text but not call). However we could see on the map that Tjäktja was only about 1 km away, so we went there for starters to see if we could find a good solution to our problem. Maybe there were a doctor, a phone or something else that could help us out? When we got there we sadly didn't find any professionally trained medical "person". However the hut warden was there. An older gentleman. At first he freaked out a little. I think he felt a lot of responsibility was all of a sudden weighing on his shoulders. However he managed to call a nurse for us on what I think was a land line phone??? (I'm not sure how that's even possible but he had a phone and it worked which is all that matters). The nurse told us *not* to pull the finger back in place ourselves (thank god!!). We would probably just make it worse she said. However she told us to go to the hospital in Kiruna. If you don't know, that's not exactly around the corner. As mentioned in the video, the closest road (Abisko) is like 50 km away and then you go for a little more than an hour by car to get to Kiruna. So we were like "uhhh... f*ck". Thankfully the hut warden called a helicopter taxi for us (which I didn't really know was a thing but apparently it is) and asked them to come pick us up. We had to wait for like 3-4 hours if I remember correctly and why wife started to get in more and more pain. I tried to help her out but couldn't really do much. However the warden had managed to bake some cookies so he kept bringing them to my wife along with red "lemonade". That gesture really changed the wipe of the situation. When the helicopter finally came he was standing outside in the rain making sure we got safely on it and waved us goodbye. That was August 30. The doctor fixed my wife's finger the same evening and the next day we flew back to Tjäktja to finish what we had started (it was all my wife's decision. I told her it was okay to go back home, but she's a badass! A clumsy one though, lol). The hut warden was all excited to see us again and greeted us welcome. We thanked him for his help but I really regret we didn't bring him any gift. He deserved that! I can't even remember his name. A few days later we completed the hike and made a dream come true, thanks to the hut warden and STF. I spoke to quite many of hut wardens along the Kungsleden. To my understanding a lot of the wardens see it as a pleasure but also as a duty. It's something you do at least ones in your life to help out others and to preserve a culture. Wardens do get paid but in Scandinavian terms you can barely call it a salary. Much love and respect to all the hut wardens out there from Denmark
Hi Stefan! This is a crazy story and I'm happy you shared it with me! I understand that you then have a special relation to this specific hut (just as I do now) which makes me very happy. When I read that you and your wife flew back and continued your adventure I got even happier! You both are badasses, there is few people that would have done the same in your situation I think! Its very kind of you both to support those organisations, they need it! And its when you end up in a situation like you did you really appreciate that they are there! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your story! It really made my day! Lots of love from Sweden, Cheers, Emma

What a wonderful place and a great video. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it very much. Hope to see more from your channel again. Have a great day.
Thank you so much, it makes me happy that you enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing your opinion! Have a great day
I trekked the Kungsleden a few years back. What a quiet marvel that is.
Couldn't have said it better myself! I'm happy you've been here! Its stunning!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Cheers Emma
Had no idea such things exist! Great idea though, and I've no doubt that they do save lives. Enjoy the tranquility!
Hey! Thank you very much. I agree with you, its a great idea to have thise huts and I appreciate it a lot!
You are literally living my dream. Enjoy and savor every moment
Really! Then I hope for you to live your dream as well one day! Thank you very much. Savor is really the word. I have to say I did my best!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it a lot.
A beautiful video and interesting story. I'm an older person in my 60s but I would still love to visit a place like this!
I think you should sir. We had many visitors the same age as you and they were all very happy about being out exploring!
Stunning landcape!
What an incredible place to wake up to everyday!
Yes, it definitely was! It's weird how you adapt as well because after a while you get used to it and don't realise until your home how fantastic it was! With that said I actively tried to appreciate that place as much as possible while being there
Looking at this my first thought was "freedom". Its easy to romantize such an area but the work to keep it up never ends. We should appreciate the work our ancestors did to have the lives we have now.
I think you are right! And I'm really trying to do that more than I've done before it's too easy to take for granted
Rather well put together. Thank you.
And thank you for watching and commenting!
Damn, I wanna girl who is/has been a Hut Warden. That outdoorsy-ness, the business sense, the feeling that shes domestic while also being wild. Im sold.
"It's also a place where you live the weather". Beautifully put! I want to go there. Thank you for the video
I think you should go there! Thanks for watching and taking your time commenting! ☀️
I did Nikkaluokta to Abisko in summer 2020. This video is a timely reminder that I must redo the hike!
Yeah its a wonderful place, there is even a lot of less know trails you can do if you get over here again!
Stunningly beautiful, what a Place to walk.
Oh yeah! Highly recomed
Sweden is a beautiful country, with beautiful people and beautiful landscapes, thank you for showing us all Emma😀
Thanks for watching and commenting Steve! Have a good one, cheers ❤️
I have visited Sweden a number of times in the past but always in the south. I have aso travelled in Norway as far north as Trondheim and I was always struck by the beauty of both these countries. Your vlog is stunning and very moving and my respect to you and Cornelius for taking up this role for 7 weeks. What an awesome premeval place!
Thank you very much! I've heard the West Coast of Norway is supposed to be beautiful but I've never been. Its definitely on my list! Thank you very much, from both of us!
not only a beautiful landscape, but a caring warden too, nice to see a strong woman that doesnt have to be half naked in a thumbnail to be successful making wilderness related content
I haven't even thought about that! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is a lovely video Emma! Looks like a very rejuvenating and peaceful lifestyle. Stunning shots - I'd love to visit Sweden!
Thanks you Josh! I really appreciate your opinion! It was a peaceful experience. I had a lot of time to think about how I live and what I priorities. You should definitely come over here one day, and when you do let me know, cause then you've got yourself a private guide:)
@@EmmaaNilss Sounds great, now I have to come! Congratulations on your video and channel's success, you deserve it! It's a very nice video. We'll all be expecting more now :P
Wow! I hadn’t seen anything about the people who maintain places like these. Thank you!! The scenery was beautiful!
Thanks, I'm happy to hear that!
I'm now on a workation (if that's already an official word) on canarian islands and stumbled upon your's and Cornelius' video. You made me instantly wanna leave here and go there... Job wel done... I'll be looking forward to more video's while making plans to go there in the hopefully not too far away future...
Hey! That does not sound to bad either to be honest! With that said you should definitely come here one day, its really worth exploring! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I'm actually working on the next one right now so won't be too far away! I hope you'll enjoy it too!
Incredible landscape, so beautiful!
I can nothing but agree with you!
Its so funny because I had almost the same experience at the same place in beginning of September 2021. I agree with you, thank you stf!
Cheers Emma
Hej,
Det var en mycket intressant redogörelse.
Tack så mycket.
Hälsningar.
Tack själv!
Good afternoon Emma. Once again, another stunning and excellent video with superb production values. Thanks for sharing another tour of your life living in the great outdoors as a strong, self-sufficient independent offgrid woman. Have a wonderful week and of course a Happy Thanksgiving 😍😍😎😎🌹🌼🌼
Hey Richard!
Thank you so much for those beautiful words! They really mean a lot to me!
I'm working on next episode at the moment so it won't be too far away! I hope you will enjoy it as well :)
Happy thanksgiving (a bit too late) and have a beautiful week!
Cheers, Emma
@@EmmaaNilss You're quite welcome Emma.
Not sure but I think I just found your other video with Cornelius, forgive me if I'm wrong but where you are sure radiates with me , love that wide open,no one around feel, hardly get that here in New Zealand, bit small getting over populated,5million people now 😮 Anywho a fantastic video, right up my alley, love from New Zealand
Hey! I'm happy you found the video and that you enjoyed it! I were in nz 5 years ago and believe it or not that was where I found my love for outdoor life! I totally get what you mean with the wide open valleys and no people around which is iconic for sweden. With that said I love the nature you've got over there as well. It's not the same, it's different but still very very lovely! Cheers from the other side of the globe
Simply wow 🤩 thanks for making this!

Absolutely perfect lifestyle and location, perfect. Hello from highlands of Scotland 👍
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers from sweden
Absolutely wonderful! Makes me want to go see it in person. Mountains! ❤ from Wyoming USA
I think you should one day! Although you got pretty stunning landscapes over in the usa as well!
Hey Emma, I have visited your lovely hut back in february 2020. I have experienced the harsh conditions brutal weather. Love to stay in the STF Huts soon again. Greetings.
Hey that makes me happy, then you know what its about! Cheers Emma
What a beautiful country! Thanks for sharing what you do! Love the drone shots and music, really adds to the story. 💗

Thank you so much for letting me know! I really appreciate it!
Sounds like a really nice memory and it seems like you were lucky since tjäktja is one of the huts which usually dosent have a shop or beer :)
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Cheers Emma
Me too!
That is some seriously gorgeous country up there. This video made me add Sweden to my bucket list!
That makes me very happy! Sweden is definitely worth a visit!
Beautiful, reminds me of visiting that very cabin some years ago, in early summer. Completely snowed in, in fact getting there was quite hard. Yes I was happy to stay inside for the night, and for a fire in the woodstove! Even heard an avalanche the day after when going over the pass.
Wow! So fun that you've been here! And yeah, exposed is really the word to describe it! Thanks for taking your time watching and commenting 💕
thank you so much for this video...very beautiful
Thanks you for taking your time both watching and commenting! It makes me very happy :)
Beautiful, it was amazing to see Tjaktja, I stayed there back in 2008, ,
Nice, then you know exactly how it is out there! Thanks for watching 💕
Hey Emma,
it's really nice to see the result of your adventure and getting flashbacks of the hike thanks to those beautiful shots! It was great meeting you (as a group) at the night train and having a really warm and welcoming time. I'm sure that every single one that got to "your" hut was happy and lucky to have such hut wardens.
Best,
Friedrich
Hey Friedrich!
Aw thank you very much! I hope you had a great adeventur as well! thanks for watching and commenting! 💕
Beautiful video.
Hello from Turin; Italy 🇮🇹
Hey thanks for commenting and watching! 💕
Loved the video thanks Emma, from Tom & karen Missouri,USA
Thank you Tom and Karen for watching and commenting! 💕
This was beautiful! What a stunning area :) It was fascinating to watch. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Thanks for watching 💕 i appreciate it !
I love these documentaries that shows people connecting with nature is what we should be. Awesome!
Great drone shots as well - new sub!
Hey thank you so much! Yeah I feel like that is what I and we need to do more. Hope to inspire to get out and explore nature more!
Really appreciate your comment! Thanks again!
To be fair, we can’t all be hut wardens. They need the infrastructure we all help maintain as well.
Hej fra Tyskland, what a wonderfull documentation and good footage from this beautifull landscape. Thanks for this one...hälsningar Michael
Thanks to you for watching!
Great video, loved it! Being alone up there looks like heaven to me, in this crazy world.
Yes I can nothing but agree. Although it also came with its own challenges, I'm thinking of doing a video about that as well, would it be interesting?
Thank you for a wonderful video!
Thank you for watching and commenting. It makes me very happy :) Cheers!
the kind of simple living i love
Same, it's very calming to the soul
I love to see more about your life there! Keep it coming.. 😊 I am jealous!
Thanks! Got one video soon ready to be uploaded
Yes it sure is! Sounds like you had a nice adventure as well
Absolutely stunning…makes me want to be there right now. But you share the spirit of the place perfectly so I almost feel for a moment I am there. I am curious what brand of pants she’s wearing…look like a good product for hiking!
Hey! Thank you so much. I really did my best with that video.
My pants are from Swedemount and I love them!
Great video! Really makes you long for the Swedish mountains 😍
Thanks a lot! That was what I was hoping for! ❤️
Hey, its funny you say that because I've heard so much about that waterhole!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow. Such a great and worthwhile venture
Yes it really was! Thanks for watching and taking you time commenting. It makes me very happy ❤️

It was nice meeting you at the tsjaktja hut. Had a great time there seeing the northern lights there, and having a warm bed for us 2 and our doggy!
Nice im happy to hear that! Yeah I remember those northen lights, they were just great!
Wow such a wonderful place and relax time,This is literally amazing and beautiful worth seeing natural landscape😊💞💞💞
Yes I highly recomed the North of sweden to all who wants to see natural beauty
Hej Emma! We stayed at Tjakta when you where there! What a coincidence that I saw this video. We had a lovely stay at tjakta, very peaceful.
Hi! Really thats funny! Well then I hope you enjoyed your time on the trail and thanks for watching! 😁
Thanks for watching and might see you out there again, it's a small world after all 😋
@@EmmaaNilss It really is a magical place. Haha it really is a small world, so I hope to bump into you again some time. Cheers :)
I've read and heard a lot about the wilderness in Norway and Finland but very little about Sweden. So nice to get a chance to see your beautiful countryside. We don't have many huts with wardens here in Scotland but it makes me appreciate their work.
That makes me very happy! We actually got quite a lot of mountain huts in Sweden and that im so thankful for!!
Do you own the hut? and how do you get shopping?
We do not own the hut, STF does, we just work there. We dont really go shopping, im working on a second piece covering the topic food but short answer we get to sent our food out in advance during wintertime.
@@EmmaaNilss Oh cool...well it looks like a nice life there.
Also it makes sense that you get food sent to you.
Great video 👍
Love the video. Subscribed from New York City!
Thanks you very much! Appreciate it a lot!
Such an amazing experience
Yes, I'm very greatful for it!
I hiked from Kvikkjokk to Abisko 4 years ago. The trail and those huts were AMAZING. I've never enjoyed a bastu as much as on the trail.
Nice! Yeah unfortunately tjäktja doesnt have one but of course we walked the 12km to the closest hut just to get a sauna and chocolate 😁
@@EmmaaNilss My memory has every other hut along the trail with sauna. And I met lots of "in between" stugvärdar som besökte de andra veckovis för att duscha och prata med andra värdar.
so beautiful!
Thanks you so much!
Nice to see this and you made a nice edit work.
Now we look forward to your next video.
🙂

Hey! Thanks a lot! Thanks for watching and taking your time and commenting! I'm working on the next video right now actually 😁
Cheers Emma
Great video and nice revisiting with Tjäktja and you two. I met you when I visited the cabin this autumn. Due to bad weather, many had sought shelter there, perhaps 20 more than the capacity of the cabin. Even though it was crowded and chaotic, you and Cornelius were absolutely wonderful with everyone. Best experience of all the cabins I visited 👍
Thank you for all the kind words! Im happy to hear you had a nice time in the cabin, we did too 😁 Thanks for taking your time commenting, this made my day, cheers!
thank´s for upload 👌💛 fantastic nature 🧡

Lots of love from Sweden,
Cheers, Emma
Wow, so beautiful place!
Really, it's magical 😍
