  • While walking through the Spring Festival on Ponce in Atlanta, GA we came across Shibumi Silks, which allows you to create custom silk patterns right there in the tent. Shannon decided to make one.

    That is such a detailed,yet fun & relaxing cool looking process,all the way up to the end. When the piece was getting pulled out of the water I suddenly became super nervous tho,4 fear that it was gonna get smudged,or bleed thru 2 the other material as it was being layed into layers & then twisted up b4 the rinsing bath..Just amazed that it doesn't mess up the design during the last steps,lol! The end result was just absolutely stunning! Awesome job guys..❤ the tye dyes 2!

    this is not oils, it looks like oils but with oils you can not marbleize on silk only on paper or wood, that can adhere to it, I believe she purchased the Marbelizing from Dharma Trading company , with alum.. that's the compondent that holds the color together in the silk. I see she charges 40.00 and up for her scarfs.. I sell mine at 80.00 and up depending what goes into it, if its animals then the price goes up to 110.00 and up to 300.00 for one scarf like dress or blouse. Its a lot of work, so do not cheat yourself charge what it takes the time plus the supplies you use, after that show they have to throw out all that left over paint...

    Can someone explain how's it done? Like colours either oil type, paints?

    • @maricarbo
      @maricarbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jigsss Cupid I can tell you what I know. I made one at a fair and it cost me $30.00 to do it. It was done exactly as depicted. The colors used are acrylic inks, not to be confused with acrylic paint. Acrylic inks are translucent, like regular blue ink that you write with. After I did my scarf I asked the lady what was in the water and she told me. They put something called “carrageenan” in the water to make it slightly heavier than the inks. They also put alum in the water. Alum has a “puckering” effect and might have something to do with the colors adhering to the material instantaneously. Nothing was explained to me. But after my silk scarf was taken out of the vat, she immediately put it in a bucket of clear water. That is to make the colors adhere as well, and to wash off the other chemicals the silk was in. This is all I know. If someone could clarify for me especially the quantities of carrageenan and alum to put in the water I would greatly appreciate it. Also, where to get the materials.

    • @michellebyrom6551
      @michellebyrom6551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maricarbo you need to look up dyeing techniques. Carrageenan is a type of seaweed, used here to thicken the water. Agar agar is another one. Both used in food production instead of gelatine. I believe the alum is a mordant, the bit that fixes the dye to the fibre. Lots of good videos about on different dyes and processes. Look for something that doesn't stink. If you want natural dyes.
      Daler Rowney 3 acrylic range includes mediums to add for textiles and printing. They clean with water too. Cheap enough and reasonable quality.

    Do you know if they made the tray to hold the size? Or did they buy it somewhere? I've seen a bunch of videos of Ebru-marbling, and it seems there are different sizes, shapes, sizes of containers. I'm moving to a south american country soon, and I want to be able to find a try for doing longer scarves....or to have one built for me there. Dunno what I ought to do. A tray that is wide enough and long enough would do for paper or fabric in various sizes, right?

    Good evening from Germany. I watched the video "My First Ebru Marbling Silk Scarves!" Saw it on youtube and was fascinated right away.
    It's just a pity that we don't find out which carrier medium is stirred into the water or whether it's just pure water where the colors are dripped on.
    I'm also interested in what colors you use for marbling? Are the colors mixed with water? Or is there something else for the colors?
    I look forward to hearing from you. Greetings from Germany
