"A lot of luck went into this as well." So refreshing when successful people who have worked hard for their achievements recognise that luck has also played a significant role. Thank you. 👊🏻
Andy Day people say that but it’s actually persistence, hard work, and bouncing back. People like Warren Buffet, or Bill Gates are not repeatedly lucky for 40 years.
@@Hazard4Tactical Actually, people say that but a lot of the time it's luck. There's science to prove it, too. th-cam.com/video/3LopI4YeC4I/w-d-xo.html
@@Hazard4Tactical I'm not discounting hard work, by the way - they're definitely essential. However, the majority of successful people underestimate how much luck played a role in creating their success.
@@AndyDay Probably life circumstances, parents etc. is the real luck for sure. As long as people 'going for it' don't use bad luck as an excuse. Some of the lucky people seem like it from the outside, until you note that maybe they tried 50 approaches or inventions etc. until one paid off, and another person would have given up after the 1st or 2nd try.
so true mate. I did the same, I minimalize all my costs to absolutely minimum, now I dont have pressure. Easier life make more creativity and less stress.
This was some really good advice. Sometimes I forget that if you want to be an entrepreneur or freelancer you don't always have regular paystubs to use for proof of income since it fluctuates so much.
Acknowledging the decisions you made AND the luck I think is so important. Many people give up before that luck manifests and it’s always nice to see someone as talented as Evan acknowledge that part of it. Dope video brother
These are really good tips. I'd like to note. If you live in Canada and you default on your credit card/ loan/ mortgage payments, you're file will go to a law firm where on top of your arears, you will be owing legal fees which are astronomical. They can also put judgement on your property or car or anything with equity. When you sell that thing, it all goes to the bank. I mention this because I work in the account department of a law firm that works for a major Canadian bank. If you're struggling to make minimum payments, contact your bank asap and make arrangements to reduce your payments. DO NOT avoid making payments. You will make things a lot worse.
This is just good financial advice across the board (regardless of being in a creative field). Liabilities cost you money. Assets make you money. One thing I would add is that there are 2 ways to succeed: Reduce expenses, or increase revenue. Take a look at where you get income from. Are you undercharging? What could you do to cross sell or up sell? Time is money... are you using your time wisely? Money also creates money... how are you investing it?
Makes six figures, says "ok" life hahahahaha just say it man you're living the dream as a photographer, we all love and support you because you're honest and relatable. I work my ASS off(in Sonoma county, CA) for around 30k a year and would kill to hit 6 figures doing what I love and spend 95 percent of my free time doing(taking pictures) you made the right moves with the right talent, you've earned it. Keep crushing it man cuz your videos are dope!
Missed payments don't follow you for the rest of your life, but actually about 7 years. Still a long time, but just wanted to clear that up. Great video and great advice!
Fantastic video man! Too many creatives - and people in general really - are afraid to learn how money works, or think they can’t do certain things or that certain things are beyond their reach. But you have to learn how money works. It’s only going to help you, not hurt you!
Always love when you talk about this side of a creative career, makes it seem more accessible fr (not easy, just accessible.) Also, the podcast yesterday was so good!
Thanks for listening to the podcast, means a lot! As much as I want this channel to entertain, I also want to teach & provide my experience as much as I can!
I am actually doing that very thing....”minimizing my liability”, for the future of my creativity.....currently brainstorming some creative ideas ..... always good to catch yer video’s, and this one spoke to me clearly...
Best business advice: Build a time machine and skip 2020 altogether. Our old 2009 iMac died in the middle of lockdown, so I lost my big screen for photo editing. My old MacBook Air has been undead since 2016 because of a faulty Logic Board - can’t edit on it because it kills drives - and now my old 2009 MacBook Pro is dying and crashing randomly too. Best part: I earned a whopping 67 cents since the Pandemic started and I’m risk group so that’s not changing anytime soon 😒 Ugh, 2020! Came here hoping for a magic bullet, but my liabilities are minimal, I have 0 debt, I never buy things I don’t need and all my money goes back into my business. Man, when 2020 hits you like that, what are you gonna do except cross all your fingers and toes that your second backup machine holds out a little while longer? So, bonus tip: Squirrel away enough money to replace your main gear and never ever touch it.
I could not agree more! I'm trying to be smart about every purchase I make. It's tough though and sometimes I fail. I used to work as a scientific researcher, but switching to a creative field is definately the right path for me, now I just need to get the revenue going. Luckily, my parents were supportive enough to let me and my dog move back home. Minimizing the risk and setting yourself up for success is definately the way to go!
I’m 17 just starting my photography career, I used to have cameras when i was younger but only getting into photography properly now I’ve sold 2 canvases but so much to learn. Also trying to blow up my accessories brand (selling modern wallets and getting into clothing) Love Evans videos such a good role model not just for photography but life in general. Good to luck everyone starting their businesses 👊🏼❤️
Good luck dude! I turned 18 this year and so far I have a camera, two lenses and a camera bag. I need a laptop and other stuff but this was all over the span of two years. It might take a while but keep at it!
I’ve been slowly saving money towards a good camera- still using my original 7d. And work a 10$/hour job... sooooo, it’s taking a while 😫😂...... and about 50k in medical debt...
Don't be afraid to buy used gear (from a reputable seller). You can find cameras that are a generation or two back that still are incredible and are way more affordable than buying new.
Love the channel! Just some random rant: I'll never get that obsession of some people with watches. It shows the time. Is the time different from anything's been shown on any other watch ? I don't get it. On the other hand, I own a Leica. So - guilty of buying overrated stuff just for the pleasure of using it... but, come on... watches ?
Good vid, Evan. Whatever works. Not getting emotional is borderline with ignoring your own emotions, though, which is not good either. If certain item has a strong emotional value it might as well be useful to have no nonsense plan of getting it via delayed gratification route. Instant credit-crushing approach would work destructively and deprive you from finding new income opportunities (it is good to stay a bit hungry).
This is 100% facts!!! Great advice here, these are the types of videos we all really needed 5-7 years ago when we were first starting so im glad its finally being talked about now!
Great video once again! Thank you for that information. Good to know and keep me motivated as I've just quit my job to pursue my photography and TH-cam! 🙏🌍
Yo Evan congrats on "making it". Things seem to be going well with your businesses - I've been following along since the Evan5ps days and it's really cool to see you being able to talk about your journey and that things have worked out🙌🏼🙌🏼
One issue with this. Financially. If something goes to a collection account, NEVER PAY IT OFF. One, Evan said it sticks with you for the rest of your life. False. It's 7 years. So say you have a collection account on your credit report that has been there for 2 years. If you decide to pay it, that means it stays on your credit report 7 years from the point you paid it. Where as if you didn't pay it (and also didn't communicate with the debt collection agency) it would be removed from your credit account in 5 more years. Obviously pay your bills, this is the best financial adive when it comes to debt. But, if for some reason you have a debt that is sold to a debt collection agency, leave it. Don't pay it, don't answer their phone calls, don't communicate with them at all, and just wait out the 7 years. Literally the only thing you can do
Absolutely loved this and appreciate it. Thank you. Probably my favorite form of reaching financial freedom is “House-Hacking” which you kind of touched on by living with your brother. #ThatCreativeLife

Something that's worked for me so far is to analyze what I'm spending and spend most of my investments on equipment that will benefit my business in the end. Purchasing a drone as we speak to bump up the quality and pricing on my video projects :)
