A foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 solves a problem.
It's a narrow one-handed phone when folded and a wide two-handed iPad Mini-like tablet that runs Android and fits your pocket. It shares the same 4G/5G data connection across both form factors.
Aside from wearing a watch, most people only carry ONE device with them at all times. People have demonstrated that they're willing to pay a premium for CONVENIENCE.
THAT'S what foldable phones with the form factor of the Z Fold 2 provide.
P.s. It also has Samsung Dex which practically makes it like having the functionality of a laptop.

      @RyanOlmstead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@PSYCHOV3N0M I'm not insulting anyone's choice. Simply saying that for ME the current foldable phones do not solve a problem. If and when they get to the point that I can have the screen of say, an S20 Ultra when the device is folded and then a tablet sized device when it's open then I'll be interested. Right now, the front screen is too small for me, and the open device is too cumbersome for when I'm out and about. I also carry a laptop with me everyday so this form factor holds interest for me. The Fold2 looks like an awesome device, it's just not for me

Instead of an 11th finger like on iPad, it becomes a full-on mouse replacement, far superior to the piddly trackpad on this keyboard. Then again the iPad Pro 12'' exists so there is certainly a market for this once the tech becomes cheaper.

Now that Apple has made their own ARM silicon it should force MS to step on the accelerator for their own develop for Windows for ARM/making their own ARM silicon, so in a couple of generations when that path matures as well as hardware costs coming down these things would be a huge deal. Just imagine not having to shop specifically for "backpacks that fits a X inch laptop" anymore with a foldable that has a battery which lasts a full day of usage without plugging in, it will be so much more liberating for people on the move a lot.

That way when folded you have a 13.3 inch screen and useable keyboard, but can use it as a full size external monitor when not folded or even just as a desktop computer when not folded along with a Bluetooth keyboard. When folded up it’s the size of a traditional laptop. That said, even with pricing coming down in years, a regular laptop with a removable screen that becomes a tablet(like we already have) still seems way more practical to me.

Hi Michael, I'm looking forward to your full review of the device!
I understand that Lenovo wanted to make a device that folded to be smaller, but that's not what I want, and I think that a LOT of people would agree that they missed the opportunity to create a "larger than a 17-inch" laptop here.
If they had decided to make this device the size of a 15" laptop then doubling a 15" display (approx 12.8"x9") by folding it would get us a 22" screen (here's the calculation √((9×2)^2+12.8^2) ). Now that would be a great thing to have, and a great device for productivity while out of the office! Even if they kept the footprint to the size of a 14" device it would still yield a 20" unfolded size!
Before people start flaming me for suggesting this, just think a bit. Why do we need to unfold to a size that we can already easily get for 1/3 the price? Why not unfold to a size that wouldn't even be possible without folding?
I was in the camp that was very disappointed that Razar never shipped the Project Valerie laptop (www2.razer.com/project-valerie). It was a laptop that wasn't much thicker than any other 17" device and folded out to have 3x full sized 17" screens! So while I'm impressed by Lenovo's X1 fold, at the same time I see it as a half-scale prototype of the "real" laptop that they should be making. At over $3000, I don't think many people will be buying a 13" laptop, even if they do think it's an elegant design and they love the concept behind the tech.
Hopefully Lenovo is listening and don't drop folding screens before exploring multiple sized devices. They may be right in making a 13" device first, but perhaps I'm right and the market is waiting for a mammoth 22" foldout. The only real way to know would be to make both and see which one sells better. My money says that it would be easier to justify the additional expense for a screen that's MORE than you could get in a traditional laptop.
Perhaps Michael can put up a poll asking what sized folding screens we'd all prefer? Or better yet, which one's we'd dish out $3000 to buy!

I get how foldable will help in some respects of screens/devices. However, I feel like the next step will be be when it's rolled up into the side frame and you can truly collapse the size of a device, not just shift the dimension to a different vector (making something thicker as opposed to wider).

This is like the dream laptop...small enough to fit in a small bookbag or purse. Easily usable in a tight area that is very narrow like a plane or small table. Large screen for serious work.
I've seen a lot of futuristic laptop designs....this is the first that screams practicality. Once the price of these laptops gets to around $1000 or less I don't see how anyone will want anything else.

I wish I could purchase one of these. It looks like a great device to take out of my bag when a Legion Y520 is just too big and bulky. Also, it brings back memories of my middle school days where I used to use an Acer Aspire One 532h-2Ds for almost all of my schoolwork. It handled Windows 7 Starter + Office 2010 Home and Student pretty well for a device with an Intel Atom N450 paired with only 1 gigabyte of DDR2 RAM and a 250 GB hard disk. It also had Gigabit Ethernet for some reason.
