Something to note about the CDs of the original version of Riven: while the main four islands were on discs 1-4, the hardest-to-reach areas (the Moiety Age, Gehn's 233rd Age, and of course the fifth island) were all on disc 5. I think that was intentional-- needing to insert disc 5 symbolized that you'd reached a very important location. Of course, a version of Riven without disc-switching certainly sounds convenient, but it does lose some minor 5 symbolism, so I felt like pointing this out.
Thanks so much. It's fairly clear once you get it but it's really tough to wrap one's brain around. It really helped me I had a class in college where I had to practice using number systems that weren't base 10 numbers (2, 5, etc) to help us understand how challenging it can be for kids to understand the base 10 system.
I started playing my favorite series again and as a kid I never got through riven. This is just me being lazy watching a walkthrough cause I could understand the puzzle but mustve got something mixed up in my notes :D thanks!
The biggest in-game hint how to fully crack the D'ni number system are the relation- ships between "1 -> 5" and "2 -> 10" we directly get from the hangman game. Notice 1 -> 5: rotate the symbol for 1 by 90° counter-clockwise to get the symbol for 5 2 -> 10: rotate the symbol for 2 by 90° counter-clockwise to get the symbol for 10 For numbers "5 ... 9" we may write them as "1 * 5 + r". Notice the corresponding D'ni symbol for those numbers is the symbol for "5" overlaid with the symbol for the respective remainder! It stands to reason this system holds for all elementary D'ni digits 1...4, i.e. rotation by 90° counter-clockwise multiplies its value by 5. Thus any combined D'ni digits has the form "5*a + b" with "a; b in {0; ...; 4}". To make that system work for the elementary D'ni digits 1...4 we already know, the D'ni symbol for zero must be the empty block. This sounds awfully similar to a base-5 number system -- exactly what it turns out to be: Every D'ni symbol represents a two-digit number in base-5.
Thanks for all the good help. I opened domes before seeing their color symbol, but I found that if you click the top button on the nearby dome viewers the domes will close again and start spinning with the yellow color symbol visible again.
Hooray! I hope my long explanations shed some light on those things. I believe in the original full entry, Gehn said it was a code for his dome (or something to that effect). Also, since we knew the first number already, I figured it was a reasonable assumption that they were all numbers.
I do definitely hate the notion of "girl games" cuz often times, I don't like them. I not only like these type of games, I also like many types of video games and have gamed all my life. :)
SPINNING THE DOMES AGAIN: push the button atop the viewer to start it spinning, again. Then, you simply do the same thing you did the first time to stop it, and see the color symbol.
Exactly! I wouldn't have been able to finish this puzzle back when I first played the game without restarting the domes, because I learned how to stop them long before I learned about the color coding and how important it was.
It's nice to know there are females out there who enjoy these kinds of games. Ever noticed how many arcade game sites have a section called "girl games" which are basic dress up or makeover programs?
I had noticed in previous episodes that you kept mentioning the numbers in Genn's journal, but I couldn't figure out how you were deriving those numbers from the symbols. Eureka moments!
Oh man, I was so stuck on this puzzle, didn't know what I was getting wrong at all. So I looked up this video and found the piece I was missing... ... That white dot in the switch was a button you had to press? : 3c
Ok, I am trying to put my code in, and I have checked the code many times, to make sure that I have the code correct, but I can't get the dome to take the code! I have tried many many times! Do they have a glitch in the game? I read some forums where they are having the same issue that I am. I just wondered if you ever had any issues, or If i'm doing something wrong. I have counted where I put the pegs and everything!
This sounds like the code from Catherine's diary (which is the combination to the telescope near the starting point, not the gold dome password). The code you need is the one from (I believe) Gehn's diary, which is a different password (and will not have any repeat numbers).
You're the best! The solution to the most annoying puzzle in the game is presented all together in a single and concise video.

You can close a spinning dome again by clicking once on the button that you opened the spinning dome with.

Yeah, sadly I found that out after filming! It's good that they had it but I just overlooked it somehow.
Thx a lot for this, u have twitch?

I've tried this so many times and it just doesn't work for me. i must be doing something wrong. wanna get on with the game, but im about to give up.
:/ stuck on that same puzzle. everything is in the right place i hit the white button. still nothing.
Mine didn’t work!!!!!
my numbers are 2,3,4,1,2. Not working

@@ChrisPlaysGamesCPG Thanks, but I figured it out the next day.
