  • 5/7/24: I had the honor to tour the FDNY Mechanics shop at the FDNY Bell Club meeting. Some new pieces of apparatus were on display such as Tiller 169, Ladder 8, Ladder 124 and Engine 292 as well as other apparatus in for routine maintenance. More photos can be found on our website.

4:18 Ladder 44 is using the oldest rig in the fleet right now, a 1999 Seagrave that responded on 9/11 and was partially destroyed and rebuilt as a 2001. Historic rig that should be saved imo.

Fun fact … that’s just fire apparatus. And just 1 of 3 facilities for maintenance and repairs on fire apparatus. EMS and the command vehicles have an entirely separate facility

What an incredible overall number and variety of rigs the FDNY has. SEAGRAVE, FERRARA, KME. An awesome fleet.

Yes but I remember when seagraves was the only engine provider and logistically it was easier. If something breaks then there’s only one manufacturer that you have to know the specs on. Now every manufacturer has their own systems and the parts are not interchangeable. I understand why you go to the different makers especially when cost is a major factor but still the old days were awesome!
I still think seagraves and American la France made the best apparatus ever!!!!

FDNY has 5 shops in total, with this being the largest. 2 handle ambulances, 1 handles ambulances, cars and light trucks/SUV’s and one at the fire academy handles apparatus during the day and ambulances at night. KME pretty much went bankrupt on the city contract. Its parent company closed its manufacturing plant. They couldn’t keep up with the warranty work associated with the FDNY
