You are a natural artist with a clever eye. This is the first time I've watched how you create with "Distress" products they are magic in your hands. I have tried to do what you do and created beautiful mud. Thank you for sharing your ideas I look forward to learning from a great teacher.

Your voice is very soothing, thank you. I like that you like distress inks for a base layer, alcohol markers are so popular, but I'm with you, I prefer the subtlety of distress inks. .

Never seen anyone use the distressed inks like that. gorgeous and the cosmetic q-tips look like they will work without falling apart like the regular q-tips do. Thanks. There may be hope for me yet.

I am watching your up to date videos and also trying to look at your past ones as they are really interesting and so full of ideas. I have never had any of the distress inks and pads so have added these onto my wish list for a future purchase. I love watching your videos as you always use other interesting media and have so many hints and tips, I would recommend your channel to anyone, beginners or more experienced colourists as well as other mixed media artists. I also love that you just enjoy colouring and do not get too hung up on perfection, having said that your work is simply amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

@ZucchiniKitty Karen!! You are the BEST…I love watching you work; everything you do is incredible and so inspiring! (My wallet does not wish to make a comment at this time, however…😂) When The Ink House came out, we were both working on it at the same time; every page you did was flat-out AMAZING and mine…well, what little I completed leaves a LOT to be desired…🤦🏻‍♀️
I have a question for you: After binging a TON of your newer videos (getting to have a FULL ZucchiniKitty day was TOTALLY worth having Covid!) I became captivated by your ink work. I LOVE the effect of the distress inks/oxides in your work, and I really like the idea of using a supply that doesn’t bleed through (like alcohol markers) and is able to create a lovely base coat in a considerably shorter amount of time. I’m trying to make a “keepsake” for one of my Littles (who’s graduating high school in a couple of months 😳), and I want to use lightfast materials so it won’t disappear before her high school reunion! 😝 I know that being in a book will provide less exposure than, say, hung on a wall, but I’ve seen fugitive pigments fade in journals in dark rooms before, so I’m trying to only use things I *know* will be safe.
I researched the inks, and it appears the Distress Oxides are pretty lightfast, but the Distress Inks are similar to any dye-based product. Of course, the Oxides appear to be pretty opaque, and while I’ve seen you use both, it would appear you use the Inks more often. So my question is this: Do you do anything that’s effective against the dyes fading with time…especially when they’re in a background, or other area where they won’t be totally covered by a more stable colored pencil? (I’ve never seen you talk about this; if you have, please feel free to point me to the right video. Or just delete this epic comment and block me… 😶) If you don’t do something to your pages to make them “behave” for a long time, are there any products you’d recommend that are lightfast AND fast? (I used to have some small Ranger Archival inks, but they were dried out when I got them; I should’ve returned but didn’t.) I considered watercolor, but the pages I’m using aren’t super water-friendly. ANY input would be MUCH appreciated…including any ideas for books to use! I’ve been using Worlds of Wonder, Worlds writhin Worlds, and an Oh the Places You’ll Go coloring book…I was thinking I’d pull pages out of all three and create my own “DIY” journal with a personalized “Oh the Places” kind of story. That said, I’m not far in (AT ALL), and would GLADLY give up my hodge-podge idea for a better one, Karen.
So, no pressure, but can you please let me know what book I should use, the supplies I should use in said book, and any other advice/suggestions you have on any part of this project? (Such as, ”Stop writing me epically long messages in my comments thread,” for example…) Actually, could you just DO IT FOR ME? It’d probably take you less time than responding to all of this insanity…😂
Thank you again, Karen, for everything you share here. You truly are one of my favorite people to watch, and I greatly admire your work. While I’d certainly never hold anything you suggested as gospel if something should go wrong, I really would like to know your thoughts. If you don’t want to answer my questions, PLEASE don’t; regardless of anything else, it brings me great joy to see you’ve uploaded a new video. That alone sparks gratitude and thanks, and it’s been a pleasure watching your channel (and art!) grow and branch out! Please keep sharing your beautiful work with the world, and thank you as always for all you do! 🤗💕

If you wish to make a keepsake book for your kids or grandkids, then yes you should change your ink to a lightfast ink or archival ink, Ecoline" or Ph Martin's "Radiant" are liquid watercolor products that are lightfast, but will bleed through pages... You could look into chalk inks for there lightfastness. I would suggest investing in a good quality paper and making copy's of the pages you wish to put into your book/journal... Distress ink will last in books for years (at least mine has, over 9 years with no fading in a closed book, and that long on other projects I have made that sit out on shelves) with no fixative covering them but you could also look into a archival spray to seal in the work... but the distress ink must be dry at least a couple a days before spraying... since it is waterbased and will move when a liquid is applied... hope this helps

@@ZucchiniKitty Thank you so much for your thoughtful and helpful reply! I actually came to coloring from a watercolor background, and while I thought about painting a base with them, it never crossed my mind to use liquid watercolors as a replacement for inks! I really like that idea, especially if using inking applicators that will help control the excessive water. I have the PH Martin’s Hydrus line; my understanding is that their Radiant (and Ecolone, I *think* ) are dye-based and *not* lightfast. It breaks my heart…those BEAUTIFUL little glass bottles are SO tempting…but the Hydrus *are* pigment-based and lightfast.
Thank you again for your insight, and, as always, for your inspirational videos! 💗

Thank you kindly for demonstration of the ink. This is my 1st time ever seeing these. Can I ask a few questions? Why use both ink and pencils? Too me it seems that you could get the same results with just pencils. I could see using these as a fantastic background. I’m thinking of more products to buy as well as storage. Is this just preference?

Hi, I use the distress ink as a base and pencils to shade and define areas. It is a easier way for me to lay down a lot of color with out hurting my wrists. You could just use pencils and get a beautiful look, this is the way I have found that works for me. The distress ink does make wonderful backgrounds and I have used it that way also.

Also could I use a paint brush for the smaller areas? And I heard you say we can use water too like water colors so that is cool!! I have a book I don't like so I'm definitely trying all this to practice

Please practice, using the distress ink as a water color is a fun technique, apply ink to a plastic sheet add a bit of water and paint away... try it out before adding to a fav coloring book.

@@ZucchiniKitty oh trust me I will. I've paid too much for these to ruin them. I like the solid rubbing color on the page and blending for backgrounds. I just need to get better application tools. The ones I have are sort of hard. They rub the color just not the way your tools do
