Usually for corn the rule to remember is there needs to be at least 3 rows. 1 row per foot and corn 6-12 inches apart depending on variety. The three rows is essential for pollination as well as support… you may find better luck planting this way. In home gardens its also recommended to block plant corn with the smallest block being 3x3 feet. Some places ive read is 4 by 4 ft.

We live about 45 minutes from Baker Creek after having moved to Missouri 3 months ago. We visited them last weekend during one of their summer festivals. We enjoyed their tours and bought a lot of seed packages for next year. The most exciting thing was to get their seed catalog!

The garden is looking great. One thing that we do whith our squash, zucchini and okra is bread it like you are going to fry it . Then lay it out on a cookie sheet and put it in the freezer till it gets frozen then you can put it in freezer bags. It stays good for a long time. When you go to fry it make the oil hot and throw it it still frozen. It works great for us

On that cabbage...my mom would be out there picking up all those dark leaves you left behind...she ✂️ cuts and trims out the tuff veins on the dark leaves and cooks them in with the cabbage head...she says the dark leaves are where the nutrition is.👍✌🥬

If you plant your corn in blocks instead of single row they pollinate better. And if you have a local bee keeper that you can reach out to about a hive on your property that will not only help your orchard but also your garden. Plus you get fresh honey out of the deal.

They say that because of the way corn is wind pollenated, a "square" or rectangle is better than a row, because no matter which way the wind blows pollen can drift to the female parts. I'm trying corn first time this year, 90 plants so far uneven germination per hole (2 seeds per hole), went back with more seed as well for the empty spots.

I have found that shade cloth can really help keep broccoli from bolting in hot weather. It's easier when you plant all of your brassicas together in a double row or block, so you can cover it all with the cloth. I also use insect netting to keep the bugs off. Insect netting on as soon as you plant them out, the add the shade cloth right on top of the insect net!

Thank you!! Your garden is looking good 👍 I have heard that if you plant your corn in more like a square configuration you will get better pollination. Like 4 X 4 or 6 X 6...you get the idea. Also,.potatoes hate the heat so even if they are determinate potatoes, they need to be hilled or protected from the heat 😁 Thanks for listening and getting us a garden tour. Now it's time for ALL of the animals 😂 Billy goats included

I had a lot of trouble with birds pulling the corn shoots to get the kernel on the bottom. Solved the problem by buying 36" rolls of chicken wire and used a hacksaw to cut it in half into 18" rolls. After planting the corn, I rolled out the chicken wire over the rows and stanked each end to keep it from rolling up. No more bird problem. I concluded the birds did not want to walk on the chicken wire for fear of getting their feet entangled.

I freeze my corn on the cob but I do it by first bringing the water to a boil first and then picking and shucking the corn, blanch for 6 minutes, into ice water for 6 minutes, vacuum sealing 4 ears to a bag, and then freezing. Comes out like just picked when heated in microwave to al dente.

Nice garden, I like the raised beds they look great where you have put down the plastic and where you have mulched. For your corn you might try planting in squares, so it is easier to pollinate themselves and stagger the time you plant so the corn ripens later in the summer for each square for fresh corn all summer long. The way we did it we also planted squash or watermelon in the center, their leaves are huge and reduce weeds in your corn patches. I have never seen the hornet nests you put up before what a great idea. At the end of summer, you can use them for Chinese lanterns.

I'd skip the pond irrigation and harvest rainwater from your animal barn roof for the pasture and animals. Then for your orchard and garden your house and new pole barn roofs because it will be definitely cleaner than pond water.

    • @CountryViewAcres

That would be a lot of water to store.
I run the garden sprinkler 2 hours a day when it is dry. 4 gallons a minute. 480 gallons a day 3360 gallons a week. So when it doesn't rain for 2 weeks. I would have to have 6720 gallons of rain water stored just for the garden. A 5000 gallon water tank is $4400 at tank depot. The pond will be the more cost effective method.

    • @jonhoskins5596

@@CountryViewAcres Obviously you can do what you want. It was just with past issues with pond scum, run off from your converted hayfield from years of fertilizer/pesticide use. I wouldn't even consider using it for animals or vegetable gardens. Many things can be used for holding tanks- like IBC totes etc.
