I got a Speeding fine in 2001 driving from Edinburgh to Glasgow, I hit temporary speed restrictions at the spot where the showcase cinema is from 60 mph to 40mph (no warning signs),I had to attend Cumbernauld council offices to pay the £50 fine , I got so lost finding the place because it is a concrete jungle , I do not normally rubbish where people live but Cumbernauld then was a complete dump its looked so tired and rundown and the people all looked grey too. Never been back since but it appears it has never changed and I guess it never will. Thank SNP they don't care about little back water towns like this they only care about Edinburgh because that's where the 1st minister lives.
It was a bold, adventurous archictectural and social experiment when built in the - early 60s? Strikingly different to anything else that existed in appearance. Unfortunately,it's an experiment that didn't work,as - not helped by the economic devastation that came along in the late 70s and 80s - it eventually became so plagued by all manner of social problems and fell into such disrepair that half of the shopping, etc. centre was demolished well over 20 years ago. Judging by this,it appears the other half may prove to beyond salvation too!
Just a typical Scottish Town...this is just one of many ..the town I love in is a s**t hole also its been left to ruin by the council ..all most councils cats about is trying as hard as they can to give you a parking ticket
The whole of central Scotland is a bleeding dump, look at the state of traffic signs, bus stops, drainage blocked and mud, gravel and grass which has accumulated over the years you can't see where the foot path ends and where the road starts. Places have over grown and covering signage too. Geeez and the state of the roads too, all the grass edges have accumulated rubbish over the years. Yeah welcome to bonny Scotland.
Cumbernauld is an eyesore. Years ago I had a chance to wander around it before I got the bus back to Fife...it's as bad as some of the worse bits of Fife too. Kirkcaldy isnae much better over in the east. Leven's bad....Glenrothes is about our version of it here. Oh and when I worked with The Scottish wildlife Trust team...we got hopelessly lost going around roundabouts and wee side roads...took us ages to get to where we were supposed to be going!. It's worse when the weather's bad...ultra depressing...
Horrible experience at the bus waiting areas last week travelling from Airdrie to kirkintilloch. Had to wait in freezing waiting area unsafe and no security to help me. This was the weekend of the riots in Cumbernauld. I complained to the council who were unhelpful. I'm pursuing it. Never ever again will I get off the bus at Cumbernauld ! It's too dangerous! The council should be ashamed!!!
In 1967 celebrating the introduction of satellite TV each country was to provide two contributions to show around the world. In the UK we had The Beatles with 'All you need is love'........and a hearty look at Cumbernauld.
That type of shopping is becoming history everywhere, thanks to supermarkets and retail parks, online shopping etc etc. Only that and the shoppers to blame for their decline. It, like many others will be demolished and not replaced.
What needs to be done?get rid of the bloody council for a start. They obviously don’t care.

Costa Coffee seem to have the right idea about the place - Drive Thru
CUMBERNAULD IS NOT MUCH DIFFERENT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE IN SCOTLAND/BRITAIN.
Most towns In Scotland have a history

Need massive tax incentives for companies to invest and rebuild.

Glasgow got some rough areas, Fife, Falkirk and the rest of the cities have their slums but nothing comes close to Cumbernauld

It's got a Wetherspoons- so not all bad....
What else do you expect in a colony - utterly exploited by its neighbour?
< NEWSFLASH> move to another area if you don't like it..... don't expect a town to revolve around your expectations ....
Greenock and Paisley are more deprived areas than Cumbernauld.
I was going to kirkintilloch from Airdrie last week and had to wait i
A hell hole; modernist town planners building crap which they themselves wouldn’t live in.
No surprise that people stoating about in the middle of the day, and who are willing to engage with The Sun, are not the most enlightened folk.
Good comment from the last guy , ardrossan is the worst place
With SNP failings across the board many other towns will also be contenders. Potholes - Litter - Weeds and empty shops, etc
Stupid comment !
This is the town that won the honor Pluke on the Plinth.
Still nicer than Preston.
All these Newtowns are horrible, eastern bloc grey misery
What's it called...
"A plook on the plinth" is what one Scottish commenter called it.
Vote for Scottish independence!
