Shinee got that old school R&B feel which i love
Here are some fun facts about SHINee's "1 of 1" MV: "1 of 1" came out in 2016 and it is the title track on SHINee's 5th full length Korean album. SHINee debuted on May 25, 2008, (5/25). In this MV there were 25 girls. So, 5 members + 25 girls = 5/25. All the girls in this MV are models, so that is why they don't really dance, and if you notice, most of the girls are taller than the SHINee members LOL -- but that's OK because it fits the theme of the MV well. As you can see, this album has a retro '90s theme. If you remember, in the '90s often the girls that were featured in the MVs were well known models and actresses, not backup dancers. The MV was supposed to have that slightly awkward, unpolished look and feel to it because it was part of the retro aesthetic. Also, I can't remember which it was, but either the time stamp on the MV or the time stamp on the song is exactly 5:25 as well.
As someone who was a teenager in the '90s, I can attest to the fact that this whole project is the perfect example of the '90s. Everything, from the look of the set with the all white background to the clothes everyone wore, to their dance moves, to the video editing and the sound of the song, was all '90s. They even released some of their albums on cassette tape as part of a limited collector's edition to further celebrate the '90s theme.
It's amazing how every song SHINee releases is very unique and unlike any other, and yet, every time, no matter what, it always has that very SHINee feel.
Onew is the one in red, Taemin is in yellow, Jonghyun is the one in blue, Minho is the one in black and Key is the on in brown. Just so you know, the order you see the members of SHINee standing in at the end, is the order that they always sit or stand in since debut days. They will always stand with Onew on the left, Taemin next to him, Jonghyun in the middle, Minho next and Key on the right. Even their starting positions in their choreography will often have them standing in this order. You almost never see them in interviews or in press photos, not in that order.
Thank Key for all the fashion in this MV. As SM Entertainment's director of fashion, Key was the one who picked out the outfits and styled everyone for this MV. And he pulled together the perfect '90s looks. :D (He spent some time in middle school -- before becoming a trainee with SM at around age 14 -- studying in Australia and the U.S. And he says his grandma had an English tutor when he was growing up. Which is why he is fluent in English and is so into western culture.)
What you saw was Taemin's signature spin. Over the years it has become one of his most recognized moves and he will do it in almost every dance he does. It's become so natural for him that he doesn't even think about it anymore.
And if you like Minho's look, take note of his blond/gray hair. There has only been a handful of times in the past 14 years that Minho has ever dyed his hair any other color besides brown or auburn. And when he has, it doesn't stay that color for more than a few weeks. :D As you may know, Minho is a lead actor in a lot of K-dramas and movies. So, one of the reasons why I think he doesn't dye his hair as often as other idols, is because of his acting roles. The majority of the roles that he plays are boy next door-type characters or historical dramas, etc. so he needs to look as average as he can. (Or, at least as average as a guy who was born with model good looks can anyway. LOL) When not working with SHINee he is almost always working on his next drama or movie.
And as others may have mentioned, Onew sprained his ankle in concert right before they started promoting for this album and he was unable to dance. That is why you saw him sitting down the whole time in the MV and why there are only 4 of them in the dance breaks. It was several weeks into promotions for this song before Onew was able to participate in the choreography. If you want to see all 5 of them dancing you will have to check out one of their last live comeback stage performances or their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul stage.
Check out their entire discography and solo work. By the time you do you won't regret ever becoming a shinee fan.
with shinee you gotta pay attention to everything... detailed dance, vocals, everything.
"1 of 1" (including the "1 and 1" repackage album) is easily in my top 3 fav SHINee albums. The whole album and the repackage are retro 80s and 90s influenced with some true BANGERS including songs like "Shift", "Prism", "Lipstick", "Feel Good" and of course the title track from the repackage "Tell Me What to Do". Just hit after hit on that album.
The roll out for the album was also spectacular. They did promos fully in the 90s style with grainy film quality and cheesy voiceover announcements. Plus the release schedule was modeled after old-school radio show track listings. You could even buy the album on cassette tapes for a limited run! Just overall a fun release.

This song always make me sooooooo sad because i loved it so much but Jonghyun was unhappy. A year later he commits suicide. Shinee played a big role in making me a fan of Kpop and Jonghyun voice would ring in my ears. That Babyyyyyyyyyy from Ring Ding Dong. It was crazy and heartbreaking to wake up to the news that he was gone. I don't think i will ever get over it. I don't think he knew how much he was loved and respected. RIP Jonghyun.
hey, comments like these can be really triggering for some people, its important to be mindful. id also like to say that songs like these should not have to be sad. jonghyun did have depression but he still loved to make music and he loved his group so songs and moments like these were filled with happiness and joy. i understand heartache but lets let these joyful things continue to stay joyful! I still remember when SHINee was a guest on 2PM's Idol Army and how excited the crew were and rookie group 2pm was acting fake jealous. This was when Jay Park was still apart of the group. It looked like they all had so much fun filming that episode. I don't take kindly to anyone telling me how to feel or react. but something tells me you understand that.
