I love the new button you use to detach the joy cons. You now have to push them in the direction you’re taking it out from, which looks like it’ll be really intuitive.
15:09 i was geeking about this yesterday to a friend but! if you look at the bottom of the wrist strap, where it touches the "table", there are small black pads under it, like the ones on a mouse to help it glide and not scuff things, which is such a nice touch honestly

It's not interactable, though, but I guess you can make the browser full screen and record the desktop if you want it in better quality. That said, just like with the C-Button being greyed out, it's possible the IR sensor at the bottom is also being hidden until the April Direct.
The interesting thought when it comes to orienting the joy cons with magnetic polarity is that if you (for some reason) decided to attach the controller to the wrong side of the device then you will either be able to attach it backwards or upside-down depending on whether the magnets had the same polarity on each side of the device. It's going to be pretty obvious when you're doing it wrong but someone is going to do it! :D
@@zeefacterfafter3 I have to disagree with you there. I only say that because if you go to 7:02, it's quite a deep hole with a shape that resembles most on-device microphones, whereas an LED would sit nearly flush with the frame.
Glad I'm not the only person who spotted the microphone! It's much clearer in some of the shots on the Nintendo Switch 2 webpage. It just seems like it's in a slightly odd position at the top of the console? I would have expected it to face towards the player a little more, and for it to be on a Joy-Con so that it can be used in docked mode too.
Alex's microphone placement is the most Alex thing I've ever seen ;-). Love the coverage guys, how will me make it through the next two months? Hopefully the rumours of a February direct are true...
Doesn't look like a microphone. There's cap right next to it. It's likely a micro SD slot that opens up with a pin much like how phones do it (though honestly I think it is an antiquated mechanism by now).
@@thenonexistingheroI'm not sure why they would do that, and the microphone looks like that on every other handheld that Nintendo has released that has a microphone.
12:00 to me it seems like those wrap around the entire body of the joycon, you can see as much from other angles. so I’m of the opinion that they removed the IR. this would also be apart why certain switch games won’t be fully supported even if they’re backwards comparable, like 1 2 Switch and Labo (the dimensions of the system would conflict with Labo as well.)
I just love the sound of Alex's voice, including the accent. It's friendly and welcoming. Thanks for a great breakdown. I also looked at it in slow-mo yesterday and figured out where the SD card slot must be. There's a leak that indicates it may use microSD express cards with much faster read/write speeds.
18:19 that idea with the magnetic poles would prevent a joycon from mounting upside down but depending on how they do it you could still put it on backwards
I also noticed the Ir camera shaped line, so I started to look more closely and seemengly thats just 2 line continuing the entire outside of the joycon to the bumpers.
To add to the point of the direction of the new joycon also, fundamentally the pins would be upside down so it just wont work because they'll be facing the wrong direction.
5:43 At a first glance, the design of the seriously fancy hinge (as you put it) looks pretty much the same as the design of the hinge on the Switch OLED's stand, including multiple moving parts getting close together.
Pretty sure there is a little lip on the bottom of the joycon rails. That's why you only see the joycons rock into the switch starting from the bottom of the rail. Which means they are keyed and can't be put in wrong. Which also means the attachment mechanism could be purely fit and lock with no magnets.
I think it's basically 100% there are magnets at this point. It was even incorporated into some of the mockup units used by case manufacturers at CES, and they got basically every single detail 100% right.
You could be right. But so far almost all the leaks mention magnets, and as weve seen most of those leaks were correct in pretty much all the information we know so far.
Something you missed, the joycon grip had the same colour accents in the connector as the screen, also while it looks quite sharp there is a fair amount of rounding up to the edges
the shoulder buttons also extend much further down the sides of the joy-cons, which would make them a lot more comfortable to click when holding one like a mouse
10:22 “The C is missing and we don’t know why” Yes we do… C is present on the leaked retail unit. It’s blanked out till the direct when they explain what it does.
To be fair, that's speculation, we don't know for sure. I do think you are correct though and I believe that is a safe assumption, especially if the button is linked to some community function as has been leaked/rumored. They're likely saving that information for the April direct and having the C on there would have people speculating about what the C stands for (which a lot of us are already.)
18:26 I think they only put one magnet per Joycon, on the bottom section, and the thing preventing you from going upside down will be the mechanical joint (the O thingy on the top of the joycon), which will obviously not click in unless it's where it should be. But I might also be very wrong on this. Edit: to clarify, the reason I think there is not magnet on top, is how close it would be to the microphone holes you mentioned. Try taking a magnet and holding it about 1cm (that's my guess-timate) away from your mic and record a little bit of yourself talking, you'll see.
The effect you mentioned is true, but not unavoidable. Samsung foldable phones have strong magnets all around them as well as microphones and they work fine.
@@HandledToaster2 strong magnets? I have a Fold. Do you mean the EMR layer on the inner screen that enables the s pen? I wouldn't call that a strong magnet. I know that because I can just put a coin next to my phone and it doesn't sick. EDIT: Okay I was dumb, I think you mean the ones on the dies that let the screen turn off when it's shut. @@cubemage3336 yeah I meant the closing magnets lol if you watch any Fold videos from MKBHD he likes to put a special sheet on top of the foldables to show just how many magnets there actually are, and they're reasonably strong.
The main thing I see most people gloss over is the connection shown on the joycon grip. Which means the grip will either have the ability to store charge for the joycons, or provide passthrough power(or both).
a lot of people, including me, have a hard time opening the card slot on the current Switch, especially the OLED. So it opening from the curved back side is a tremendous positive change.
You’re spot on regarding the magnetic pole orientation of the joy con connection. I have designed 3D printed tiles that auto-align using embedded magnets. I achieved this by placing alternating north and south poles on mating surfaces. The parts auto-align in only one orientation.
I believe you missed that the skate like strap has a plus AND a minus on each side, which means that you can use it with both joycons and mix the colors 😉 (no video has covered this yet)
One more thing missed was a small but appreciated detail on the new Joycon Grips. The center of them, where the mouse optics are, is slightly raised so it doesn’t slide around and pick up random stuff on your desk.
20:23 I swear Alarmo was a test run for this! Alarmo style clock/features and more weird fun QOL experiences!! Or as like a health bar in Metroid or tank meter in splatoon! Even showing how far a song or video you are or seeing updates from some much bigger more interconnected miiverse style thing. Honestly I can imagine them integrating alarmo into these kind of things as well!! If they only do the battery charging thing again, they’re just actively messing with us lol.
I havent seen anyone mention this. But the L and R buttons are way longer along the joycons than the original joycons. Almost double in length. Making them much easier to press when held as a mouse.
I'm guessing there will only be magnets at the top on each side. The notch on the joycons most likely slides over a hook of some kind on the bottom of each inner rail (not seen in video). The video always shows the bottom of the joycons connecting 1st.
So I doubt those are actually ir sensor’s because on some other angles you can see that the lines come up the sides of the joycon, so either that has some form of new feature to them or its just design.
The speakers and air intakes are separate. You can see the left speaker at 17:21 and the right one at 18:12, it'll be a similar configuration to the switch OLED with two stereo speakers I believe.
I think the ir scannar is just the design of the controller and not an actual sensor. If you look at 19:52 when the switch flips over you can see the seem go all the way around to the top connecting the shoulder buttons. Could be wrong but if those seems go to the top probably more for design/structure than anything else.
That optical sensor isn't just on an optical sensor. There is a second device next to it. The removed C is likely a camera button for the camera next to the sensor. The button is on the other joycon likely, so you can stand back and take a photo. I think they are going to make a sort of mario paint with the mouse feature and my hope is they combine mario paint and mario maker together. The camera next to the sensor will allow it to do things like trace images as well.
I can imagine, there are only magnets in the top part of the joycon and the bottom part hooks into the console with the little cutout on the bottom. I think that's the reason, why the joycons need to get attached bottom first as visable in every image. That'd also make it asymmetrical to solve the issue of possibly putting the joycons on wrong.
I believe for the Joy-Con straps, the main detach trigger will still be used. The button on the peripheral seems more likely to be a lock like we saw on the previous iteration of Joy-Con.
At 21:38 you missed that you can see how much raised up the console is in the dock! I.e. the dock has more real estate underneath the connection portion. Possible more computing going on down there?
The flat grips on the joycon controller attachment I have little doubt will be comfortable due to the fact that they look no different from a design standpoint than Satisfy's grips, which are easily among the most comfy grips available.
16:39 there is no connector but there is an additional dowel looking thing between SL and SR and maybe another microphone hole? Also does the HOME button loose the light ring?
10:41 well the Home Button also doesn't have the Home on it, so either they just simplified the design, like how they removed the arrow engravings from the D-Pad, or they forgot to render it. Edit: the latter seems to be more true, since if you look at 11:35 you can clearly see the Home engraving on the Home Button. Edit 2: and also at 12:14 you see the formerly missing arrows on the D-Pad. So yeah, they just forgot to render it.
With the JoyCon size increase, we will have a bit more difficulty reaching the face buttons and thumb stick while using individual JoyCon horizontally. They are very centered while used horizontally and look very uncomfortable.
17:40 I would love if you can put the controllers in upside down and then it just flips the image on the screen like an iPhone would. Oh but that actually wouldn’t work because then the pin connectors wouldn’t be aligned.
Great video as always. And as always with a comedy twist. 🤣 Magnets have the N (north) and the S (south) poles, not plus and minus (that’s for electric charge). 😉
I don't think either side has an IR camera, and that is why some Switch 1 games aren't compatible. You can see in another shot that the panel on the side of the joycon that rounds off like the IR camera actually goes right round and up the side of the joycon - I also spotted this in an early prototype leak photo. My guess would be that it's a slightly gripper textured or rubberised part of the joycon to help grip. Or it may have just been designed that way to enable future colourways in keeping with the new ‘grown up’ aesthetic - so you could get mostly black joycon but with all sorts of colours in a cool stripe going down the side and wrapping around the edges of the joycon.
To further prove the “mouse theory” when the Joy-Cons fly up after skating you can see the holder that connects the straps… you’ll notice is that it’s hollow. The strap accessory is a ring that goes around the extrusion of the Joy-Con… why is it a ring? Well for the optical sensor of course
The magnet is on the bottom of the Joy-Con and at the top is a circular locking mechanism the stick out when you press the button on the side to lock the controller to the console. I wonder if the Joy-Cons has the same motion control technology as the Wii did and the small dock is allowing the sensor to exposed at the top of the console to be detected by the controllers.
18:21 i believe that if you look at the bottom of the joycon there is a little indentation, i think you have to angle them in before the magnetic attachment to help it stay extra secure. Note they always angle in from the bottom in the video
WAIT What if the blue and red/orange joycons have opposite magnet attration so you would technically not even need the joycon grip accessory to use it as a regular controller
Exactly. The wrist straps look like actual mice tails too. So in the video part it looks like two actual mice skating around. If that's not a huge hint, I don't know what is.
I know it won't happen but makes me imagine if it was a cast mirror +or dual screen mode button! You could get the next Splatoon 4 game with an optional dual screen mode like the awesome one in the original! Or a sequel to the highly underknown gem game that was Nintendo Land on the Wii U (playing ghost Luigi Mansion/tag/Metroid/Zelda mini games and stuff). Playing Virtual Console DS games on TV like the Wii U did and Wii U/3DS games. They would have to put a short range radio in the console though and a receiver in the dock though I doubt they would set aside such a large part of the budget to do something that cool, rather than put that money towards better performance though, which tbf probably is the wise decision keeping the console more affordable at $400-$450 rather than $500-$550 whatever it'd cost
You have a point, usually it has more plugged in. But since it is a showcase.. hm maybe in later advertising, they might display the system in a real world setting/ instead of simulated?
20:31 If the C button is a chat button, I could see the exposed screen being for chat notifications previews like on your phone. Walk by your Switch 2, see you got a notification.
I’d love if they used the sliver of screen above the dock to show when friends come online. It would he huge if I could see someone coming online and know to jump in the game with them.
As well as the drift, i hope they make the SL SR ribbon cables stronger. If you opened the old joycons to fix drift, there was a 70% chance you broke it
The speakers and air intakes are separate, the vents they said are air intakes are indeed that. You can see the left speaker at 17:21 and the right one at 18:12, it'll be a similar configuration to the switch OLED with two stereo speakers I believe.
The split hinge is so if you bend it too far, which many kids will do, it will pop off instead of breaking off. It’s a safety feature.

Im not sure if having the intakes on the bottom of the console would be a great idea... I think the air intakes are to the left of the top USB C port
No ir cameras on the bottom, you can see the seem running along the whole side of the joycon 🤷🏻♂️
notice as well that the shoulder buttons on the joycons are much larger, and follow along down the side of the controller far more than they used to
16:39 there is no connector but there is an additional dowel looking thing between SL and SR and maybe another microphone hole? Also does the HOME button loose the light ring?
10:41 well the Home Button also doesn't have the Home on it, so either they just simplified the design, like how they removed the arrow engravings from the D-Pad, or they forgot to render it.
Edit: the latter seems to be more true, since if you look at 11:35 you can clearly see the Home engraving on the Home Button.
Edit 2: and also at 12:14 you see the formerly missing arrows on the D-Pad. So yeah, they just forgot to render it.
less "forgot" and more "intentionally didn't show"
@@squiddu why wouldn't they though?
@@cubemage3336because it wasn't the end of the sequence yet
Can't believe Nintendo is making a 4 Resident Evil reference
With the JoyCon size increase, we will have a bit more difficulty reaching the face buttons and thumb stick while using individual JoyCon horizontally. They are very centered while used horizontally and look very uncomfortable.
17:40 I would love if you can put the controllers in upside down and then it just flips the image on the screen like an iPhone would.
Oh but that actually wouldn’t work because then the pin connectors wouldn’t be aligned.
The mini Dpad joke was very funny
A simple download bar could work for the exposed space when docked so you know when something's done downloading without needing to pickup the Switch
The TV flat plastic connector makes me realize they will definitely enable the Switch to have very different controllers to plug to the Switch 2.
This was super informative yet amusing to watch! Good job 😂👏!
I think the part of the screen showing out of the dock will flash with a colour for updates and messages like the Nintendo Wii disc slot.
i wonder if u can charge your switch 2 twice as fast if u put chargers on both the top and the bottom plugs
No. The charging power isn't limited by the port but most likely by the battery loading regime.
11:17 the directions actually are still marked, you can see light bounce off them when they move it
18:21 i believe that if you look at the bottom of the joycon there is a little indentation, i think you have to angle them in before the magnetic attachment to help it stay extra secure. Note they always angle in from the bottom in the video
We're finally getting the long awaited sequel to Hey You Pikachu
WAIT
What if the blue and red/orange joycons have opposite magnet attration so you would technically not even need the joycon grip accessory to use it as a regular controller
3:17 Maybe a usb connected keyboard peripheral on the bottom, that allows the top to be used for charging at the same time?
Wish one of the secrets would have been button backlights for when playing in hand held mode at night...that'd been awesome
The kickstand was an much needed improvement, no idea how the original was approved lol
Thank god, I thought I was going crazy thinking I was seeing an IR thingy
TOMODACHI LIFE 2 😤😭
*3
The first one was on DS
Tomodachi
Felix lookin' fly wearing that AOT hoodie.
"nothing to see here, skatey skatey" but theyre literally confirming thay the joycons can be used like a computer mouse!! This is huge
Exactly. The wrist straps look like actual mice tails too. So in the video part it looks like two actual mice skating around. If that's not a huge hint, I don't know what is.
The upper usb-c is for a camera attachment, Mario Kart will be a pack-in game with the more expensive $400 dollar SKU.
Could it be docked upside-down? That way the vents are clear for airflow and then on top if played free of the dock but on a table with the stand?
MAGNETS! How do they actually work? Nobody knows! Lmao i love Alex 😂
Anyone think it’s odd only 1 cable going from the switch in dock mode to the TV. Just power no hdmi?? Could be nothing.
If you opened the old joycons to fix drift, there was a 70% chance you broke it
14:53 Thanks Compression - THOMPRESSION!
The kick stand support vertical position
I wanna assume that the square button is a way for voice chat like how xbox and playstion does it but nintendo style
3:18 he's a man of culture 😂
Those are definitely downward speakers. Not airvents. Or maybe both, but definitely speakers.
The speakers and air intakes are separate, the vents they said are air intakes are indeed that. You can see the left speaker at 17:21 and the right one at 18:12, it'll be a similar configuration to the switch OLED with two stereo speakers I believe.
