That was fantastic. Behind the scenes videos are interesting as we seldom see what takes place once the ships transit the canal and tie up at the various terminals. Loved the footage of the hatch crane in action. Don’t recall anyone showing us that before. This is one of my favorite PS productions.
LOL, I have a lot of videos never posted from this season Ill be putting out all off season. I found on TH-cam if you post more that 1 video a day, the algorithm from hell really punishes you, hence 1 a day.
How many crew members are required to stay on board during layup? Do they rotate vacation/ family time among each other.? Loved this informative video.
Depends on the work being done on the ship, most of the time it is now regular work hours shifts. I think they have a "night watch" on the ships for the off hours
I cut that part off, there are hatch clamps around each hold they use to keep the covers secure. , as for a discharge video, not ore, but this is how its done: th-cam.com/video/CzOxGNK3rQI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9o2USKnQlvXgDyu1
@@PaulScinocca LOL! I love tugs so much. They're my favorite craft. Saw a biiiig yellow and black one outta the water at a marina in St Clair Shores, MI back in the 90s. She was bigger than our house, or I'd've popped her right into my pocket and stolen her. Do you know who that tug was who had the zoomies? The Helen H (who was sold to a company in MI) was the only yellow tug I'd seen in Duluth. I miss seeing her so much!
That’s a good question! Since it hadn't snowed for a while, guessing the ore was "dry" Also Guessing since they are in Layup until End of March, they are not too worried about it?
The ore has already been processed into taconite pellets so there is nothing that will happen if it freezes unlike coal will freeze together into big chunks because it still has moisture in it
I just noticed the 2 dudes standing on the far side of the ship....GREAT perspective!
I didn't even notice that!
I hadn't a clue that ships did this! Thanks, Paul!
Rumors tell me they do this with this ship every winter? First time I've ever seen/heard it!

Thanks Greg, I try to keep it interesting and a little different.
Another fine video and informative. I guess I jumped the gun when I said I would see you in the spring. Thanks Paul

This is the first time in many years that Presque Isle has not come home to Erie for the winter. I miss her. Edgar Speer is over in her place.
Just saw that yesterday. DonJon has a full house on their side .
Get used to it. She ain’t never coming back there. She loves Duluth more. Get over it. The preceding as presented by the Duluth Layup committee
I was quite surprised she was laying up here as well!

Would love to see a video of how cargo is off loaded. By the way, how are the hatches anchored down during transport?

I liked watching the tug doing zoomies lol 😂

Paul did she load ore or Coal? Coal will self heat if it is wet when loaded.
30k tons of Iron Ore
But won t that ore freeze in the meantime Paul?

Paul, did you do calendars this year? TIA!
I did, www.lulu.com/shop/paul-scinocca/2025-duluth-mn-ship-calendar/paperback/product-84r7v2w.html?page=1&pageSize=4
We loved last years! I should have ordered earlier! Thanks for all you do!!❤❤
Do the lakers layup at the same places each year or do they go to the place with the best price for the work needed during layup?
That's a great question! I'm not sure of the exact details of where they decide to lay up but I'd bet it's a combination of factors.
Will that ore be the beginning of the first load after layup? Or might they unload before going for a load of something else?
Thanks for the video
I believe they will be back at CN topping off the load this spring! They are loaded to 30k, I think the ship hauls 55,600 GT when full
Is it cheaper to buy ore in the off-season?😂
Not that I know of. I do know this load was mainly used for the Barge Ballast to get it deep enough in the water during layup.
I don't know about that but the scrap iron price generally goes up during the winter when there isn't traffic on the Lakes
