One of Ray’s best for my money. Nice modulation after the intro. Making good use of the relative minor later. Thought provoking, sympathetic lyrics. Great song.
The finest Kinks song…….which is a feat in itself……as they are the OG’s of Brit pop….Ray…..hold your head high and dig yourself brother……..you are a genius with the right people around you…….lucky sod.
This and Tommy are the peak of British pomp-rock. Beautiful compositions throughout both albums that reworked the whole formula of rock and roll into broader and more ambitious territory.
Just been incredibly incredible listening to this song since the late 70s. The golden hour of the Kinks..became a lifetime of the Kinks. Ray.LYRICAL GENIUS.Micks emphasis is glorious.Peace people.❤
This is one of Ray Davies' masterpieces. The addition of the horns really works. My other 2 Ray favourites are 'Dead end street' with some additional trombone and the song 'Village Green' with additional harpsichord and oboe. Check them out, the original video to 'Dead end street' is great.
Compare this to “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” Which one got the airplay? Which one is the far superior song? The Kinks shat on the Beatles after 1967 and it won’t be acknowledged for another century.
Somehow never heard this one before, it's so so good!

This and brainwashed are my favorite off the album. 2 songs with almost 6 different sounds. So badass!
Not many comments for this classic and beautiful song in 2024 ❤❤❤
As a young man no song has spoken a finer truth. *Tips Trilby.
When all you care about is material you can never truly be happy, the only thing you leave this earth with is your memories 🩷🩷

Magnificent. One of their best.
Enjoy your discovery! The Kinks are THE buried treasure of rock n roll.

"S.F. Sorrow" by the Pretty Things also ranks up there with those two albums.
What a beautiful song ❤

Ray Davies...top man👍💚
As a born and raised consumer, I get this. And I live in an oligarchy, not a monarchy. Oh wait: Same thing.

I'm 41 years old and I've only just found this song! All those lost years! 😳

They shat on them from 64 onwards
