  • This video is a demonstration of cylinder honing using a Rottler automatic cylinder hone machine by Butch Reilly in his machine shop program at Spokane Community College. This honing machine is newer than the Sunnen CK-10 we have a Sierra College but will serve as a good review of the cylinder honing process.

    Nice to know some of the magic that is happening when I send my block to machine shop. Also, makes is clear why a simple honing in my garage is not really enough in most cases. Thanks for the clear, concise and easy spoken video and kudos to the camera guy too!

    If ya'll had a Sunnen CK10 you'd sell that Rottler.........I think you're a great instructor. I wish more young men getting out of high school would get into more technical fields.

    Your are a great teacher. I’ve been a machinist for 27 years. I program and setup cnc lathes but I’ve been kicking around starting a machine shop for machining engine blocks. This was very very informative!

    Good video @Mr. French.
    I have been using Sunnen honing equipment for over twenty years, even have a Sunnen CV616 in my own garage. It was interesting to see the Rottler in action as I deal with about a dozen engine shops and they all have the Sunnen machines. I have never seen another brand power stroke hone in person, or watched such descriptive video about one. So thank you for learning me something🍻

    It’s now the second video I watched. I’m getting soon trained as an engine machinist and these videos are great and helpful towards my training 👍

    you can easy see the teacher who has never drilled a cylinder except at school . but it starts here, the experience comes in real life😄😄

    I used to use a Sunnen machine.. I too didn’t see much distortion from the main caps, but a torque plate and head gasket made a big difference. I’ve seen lots of videos lately where they use WD40 and a three finger auto parts store hone! Makes these machines obsolete! LolJust kidding. Thanks for the good video.

    Thanks for this interresting vidéo. Choie of stones , roughness Ra , angle between ‘scratches’ , end’s gap. As you say, final cleaning is very important and must be done.

    Damn, using spindle load to monitor size is pretty smart !

      Yep. In the old days you needed to pay a skilled machinist to do that.

    with the Chrysler blocks they want you to torque the motor mounts on to them because that distorts the cylinders on either side

    Independent scientist I had developed a new form of Palmer that I am going to apply to the piston rings and cylinder walls it will enter the composite deleting the friction issue but yet given it great compression I like your video in technology this is something new ub1 I figured would appreciate it

    There is allot of internet questions regarding the final bore surface finish. I have rebuilt a number of engines and some manuals specify the exact hone to use. The finish for cast iron rings is specified in Micro-inches at around 25-30 with a cross hatch of 30 degrees. Some specify a 180 grit ball hone and some recommend a 220 grit hone which should obtain around the 20-35 micro inch finish. You mentioned a hone near 400 grit which seams too fine for cast rings. Can you respond to this?

    Dudes on TH-cam think their $89 dingle ball hone is doing the same at this $65K machine.

    • @grantreid8583
      @grantreid8583 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had 20 years in the reco game and the dingle berry hone is ok for a rering job as it wont remove any material and increase your piston clearance. Of course you would not use one if you have rebored an engine as it will not remove the material the needs removing after boring.
