It’s wonderful how well you know all the pigment numbers and recognize the similarities in the different paint brands! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.😉
This is why you mustn’t feel bad about getting new watercolors. We need someone with your level of experience and expertise who is on the side of us consumers.
If anything ever happens to that wine-colored sweater you're wearing (I see the sleeve), I will absolutely grieve for the end of an era. It is iconic Lindsay. Thanks for the review. It's always peaceful to watch reviews.
@@thefrugalcrafter It's awesome! Guard it at all costs ;-). I have one of those. It's my sweatshirt from when my team won the Rose Bowl the last time in 2003. Now it's a scrap so I wear it for various forms of painting! --house, paper. Bless the painting smocks in all flavors.
Love this Tin.... you're right, I can understand how you were taken by it right away 🥰 Lyndsay, I use Schminke's Medium W with my oils (Gamblin primarily) both the liquid form and the gel form turns ANY brand oil paint into water mixable, paint thins & cleans up like Acrylics, no smell! Cheers
@thefrugalcrafter video idea?? Lots of oil painters going to love this product now that cold weather here. Have 2 large dogs & 2 cats all in my studio while I paint & all we smell is the linseed oil 😉
When you got the magnet out my jaw dropped. That's so cool! The pale colors could be named after me, too. That's a really pretty tin. I'm amazed how you recognize the similarities and numbers, but I suppose that just comes from using them so much for so long. The final painting is very pretty, too. Thanks for the great review.
Do you or have you made your own watercolours? Your knowledge about these is fascinating. I love watching you swatch....very calming and as I said fascinating 😌 😁 yes it did look like a paynes grey. I actually went back to rewatch because I was typing at the time and was surprised when you said indigo because I had assumed it was paynes grey lol What's going on with the magnet? 😮 so there's metal in the paint right? Which colours would you do that with...just that black or are there others? Mind blown right now 🤯😂 The gamboge in the rainbow tin, to me, seemed to dry to a disappointing "flatness" I love gamboge usually because of the mix of yellow and brownish tones it dries into (I may have that completely wrong because I don't have any knowledge about these things) but yeah the yellow gamboge in, I think, my winsor and newton cotman set is gorgeous. One of my favourites.
Mars black will move with a magnet. Look for pbk11 pigment. The pigments for gamboge have changed over the years as they have been discontinued. Every brand has a slightly different version or a warm yellow. With PR sometimes names get mixed up in translation.
Your sleuthing is top notch! I enjoy listening to you with a cup 🍵 of coffee -even when I don't need more paint 🫣. I am also a sucker for beautiful tins. I started painting my own, though. This is when your large collection pays off: you always have something to compare to. No guilt about the abundance. It's part of your research 😂. Hope your dad is recovering well! Keeping you and your family in my thoughts.
Love the tins. I dip my Altoid tins (open and horizontal) in water that has had 2-3 fingernail polish colors swirled in it. I would send pictures but don't know how.
❤ I love an orange burnt sienna. Imo, it's the perfect squirrel color. 😊 I would love to see a video experimenting with Raw Umber and what to do with it! Limited mixing video.❤❤❤
Thanks for the review Lindsay. This item is sitting in my Amazon cart but mostly for the tin. I think as a beginner I’ll learn faster by not trying every variation that comes along. I like my original Mei Laing (that I bought per your original review!) and my Daniel Smith.
Thank you for this. The tin is definitely very pretty, the colours look nice too. By the way, if you want to try an Eastern European brand with great earth colours, I recommend Roman Szmal, they have really nice earth shades, and a huge variety. The prices used to be amazing, but they doubled in the past two years, still it’s relatively good value.
Lindsay, I happened to have my Pretty Excellent swatch sheet next to me as you were going through these swatches. I started reading the pigment codes on the greens as you were telling them to us. Perfect matches every time. Definitely look like Pretty Excellent paint to me! It might be nice to have this pretty box AND a smaller set without the metallic paints included. Oh, and we're all so very pale in these Kansas environs too, so I agree @CautionArtistsPlay. This is one Greek who has become incredibly pale these days & all year around.
Nice palette! I may pick one up when they have a better discount. I like the colors however I think they could have done with one less red and one less yellow, maybe leave out the cerulean blue hue in order to add another dark or olive green and a yellow ochre. Love the tin!
Hmmmm, I'd advise against getting too attached to that crimson, since PR 206 was discontinued a couple of years ago. That caused a bit of a kerfuffle because a LOT of manufacturers were using it in their Quin Gold mixes and had to reformulate YET AGAIN after both PO 49 and PO 48 were discontinued.
Hullo Lindsay, I almost passed this video bye. I am so tired of the Paul Rubens watercolors as you cannot buy replacement paint! Now, I have purchased a set because of the tin! My wife exclaimed that she would LOVE to have a pink tin palette! So I purchased the 24 half pan set and the first thing I did was remove the paints and inserted a grand set of DaVinci of California Paints! I believe the DaVinci Paints are a superior paint to the Rubens and I am done buying student grade or “fake” professional grade paints! I have liked and of course here is your comment with time watched, to help with the algorithm, here’s hoping I have helped you and your channel boost your videos! This one as well as your other videos! You your Dad with the rest of the family are in our prayers and good thoughts too! Please take care, be safe and enjoy this Holiday while we can still honor our military veterans.
Now that the quin nickel azo yellow is a goner, having that orange sienna might be what will keep us sane.... add a skosh of lemon yellow and your're Golden. So to speak. :)
Yes, I think it's better than the student full pans, at least, they act a bit more pro and pigment based where the full pan set is more inky. It depends on what you like.
Thank you Lindsay. My only thing about Paul Rubens is they have so many sets but they don't have open stock and are they duplicate colors? I am confused by so many sets. I like the tins though.
Yup, either they have a stockpile (possible because they are a Chinese company and there are big regulations where they can get pigments from) or its a typo.
It's interesting that once again, this set says it uses discontinued PR206 for the (permanent) Alizarin, and long-discontinued PO49 (the original quinacradone gold) for several mixes. PR88 is also very rare and DaVinci is the only other company I know of that uses it in mixes. Winsor & Newton did used to use a unique hue of PR206 for their permanent Alizarin, but changed it fairly recently. Rubens may still have old stock, and it's quite interesting it's the same hue as W&N's. But I honestly question the PO49.
You often find on your cellulose paper that stuff doesn't stain much, and also, things lift better when they've just been applied and they're not completely dry. What's the paper you use to swatch again?
The Berbers of North Africa & the Arabs said it first, They deliverately design a flaw into their woven rugs, "Because only God is perfect. I imagine the Amish got it from them, or it came to Europe during the Crusades.

Yeah! My Gran taught me with 6 colors an from 10 to 15 years old that was all I got! I got a tube of SAP Green for my 15th birthday! I also felt so emboldened that I didn’t wait for permission to get a new color and I purchased a Paynes Grey for mixing black! I was just so tired of getting to black by mixing and that grey helped me a lot!

I love the Mars Black too.
For the life of me I couldn't see that Mars black pigment move but that's probably my aging eyesight 🤣. I really enjoyed the review thank you!

It’s a really great tin, right?
My set also had a mars black for the extra colors. I had two Ultramarines and a Mars Black. I was happy about that mistake too.

LOL, pale Mainer with a little jaundice. 😂😂😂 you crack me up Lindsay. I agree, the indigo looks like a payne’s grey to me too
Very nice tin, and I love the rose in the bell mason jar painting you did with it!
Thanks! It was fun to paint.

Beautiful tin ty Lindsay this is my new channel this will be my new art channel Gracie from uk I like Paul Rubén’s watercokours are great 😊👍
Their gamboge is made of PY153 and PO49 in Quinn gold? Too good to be true for a student set. I'm ordering this now, Lindsay 😅

Yes, I heard about that from Cheap Joe's! I have a few tubes of pr206 and you can still find it so stock up if it's an important color for you.
I love the mars black!!!
Aww lovely tin. Paints look interesting but I don’t need more paints still throughly enjoyed the review, lol Pale Mainer so funny.

Yes, I think it's better than the student full pans, at least, they act a bit more pro and pigment based where the full pan set is more inky. It depends on what you like.
Always love your reviews! Pale Mainer, lol😅

It is a little confusing!
Hello, Lindsay. Thank you so much for tutorial.
You're welcome!
PO49 is in the sap green? Isn’t PO49 the discontinued Quin Gold? 😮
Yup, either they have a stockpile (possible because they are a Chinese company and there are big regulations where they can get pigments from) or its a typo.
The paul rubens swatches you did just now do look better than the qiaomei swatches

Ok Paul Rubens, I love you -- but now you're just bringing out more sets, for more sets' sake!
They will keep doing it if people keep buying it. Supply and demand.
On Paul Runbans why don't they say Artist Grade?? 🤔
This particular set is an acedemic/student grade. The pink tin and striped tin sets are artist grade. They have several lines. It can be confusing.
I can't exactly read Chinese language but I am familiar with Chinese numbers and the qī 七 in the name is the number 7. For what it's worth.

exact same number and pigment and names..as.on the set with the plastic white palette...so same paints in a nicer tin...
Seems that way to me...
