  • A video of my Vega Selena 215, bought for me brand new in 1986 as a birthday present . Which, is still alive and working perfectly well today. Russian 'Iron Curtain' technology at its finest, a traditional transistor radio.

Only had mine a few days bought it in a junk shop for £5 Covered in dust and dirt in Blackpool where I live so didn't expect it to work but got it home plugged it in and it works perfectly The dust and grime must have protected it because after a very quick clean it hasn't got a mark on it 🙂

I got mine in '85 via a Sunday newspaper promotion - it was about £30. (£29.99?) Worked fantastically and got me interested in shortwave and eventually journalism, hence owe it my career. Buttons and waveband knob now virtually knackered - possibly beyond repair. Probably mose useful thing I ever bought.

Beautiful sound and simple design like the best conceived radio at that time. There is every guy one can wish especially the short wave bands. Thanks for the video.

I bought an Astrad VEF 17 in 1971 from a newspaper advert. It shares many features of the Selena. Mine came with a special separate external battery pack to enable me to use in on UK mains but the many size D batteries it took lasted for ever. Introduced me to recording from radio via a DIN plug, and a life long interest in radio. In 1971 it cost £21 but that took me a summer holiday of work to raise - probably about £80 + allowing for inflation. One of my best buys too and although it no longer works I keep it out on display and just regret that it would be uneconomic to repair now, especially as SW and MW are now so cleared out by the internet.

This brought back many happy recollections of my own example of this radio, still in 100% working order. These VEF radios were manufactured in the Latvian SSR for the whole USSR and export markets, and with the independence of Latvia in the early 1990s the huge factory was closed down. Visiting Latvia a few years ago i tried to discover more, but people were reluctant to talk about the "occupation" era. There is also an inferior Belarus manufactured copy, without the signal strength meter and poorer wood construction, that must date from the mid-1990s. Thanks for a memorable video.

I had one of these as a teenager, much better and cheaper than the then UK made radios of the day. Very good sound and quite sensitive.
These days short wave is almost useless as many overseas stations have closed down or now only broadcast on the net.

I had one of these around 1985, got it one Christmas, got into shortwave radio and general FM AM radio. Gave it away many years ago. Bought another off ebay about 6 months ago. Fantastic set, loud and clear. The FM is dodgy but all the shortwave channels work fine

Now i have this radio from new for two reasons , bought out of curiosity and due to threads film about having a radio that would check all frequencies .
Mainly to have radio contact should a nuclear war start, and curiosity about russain tech.
When i got the radio i took it apart and discoverd that some compoments were not quite correct, in further investigation i found resistors of incorrect values made up with a legnth of coiled wires across to get the desired value.

+Steve Mullington I have a couple of russian radios and this Selena is the only one that has a standardized euro power cord, older models (e.g. B211) use a cord with a round 3-pole connector, which is almost impossible to buy.

I have an alert set up on eBay. They generally don't have the cord or on occasion won't sell it separately. My search continues.
