Your stitching and quilting are beautiful as usual. So happy you sold your Florida home, that must be a load off your mind. I am a retired nurse and for most of my almost 40 year career, I worked a lot of night shifts, a lot! So when I retired in 2015, my life still sort of revolves staying up late and not getting up until late mornings. I have been quilting and cross stitching since the late 1980’s but most of my crafting was quilting until I picked up xstitch again in 2019. So now, most days, I am downstairs in my sewing room working on quilts from around noon until dinner time, then from after dinner until I go to bed I xstitch. That has worked well for me so far! I am trying to clean out my sewing room, but I keep adding to my cross stitch room, so I’m not sure I’m getting very far. I hope you enjoy being back in KY full time! Heading to the Silver Needle Retreat in a few days, so obviously xstitch retreats take away from my quilting! Unless I go to a quilting retreat! P.S. I am still a totally slow, monogamous stitcher. More than WIPS stress me out! 😊😊
Thank you so much for sharing your experience of balancing our two great hobbies. I think you have worked out a great balance. I am a morning person and not worth much after dinner, so your system would work if I just adjusted it to earlier hours. I will let you know what I come up with. Happy stitching. Best, K
Love it all!! Congrats on the sale of your condo. You must be relieved! I really like that quilt and your early attempts and all the fancy quilting. I could see areas where your technique improved so much!! Had you not pointed out your mistakes, I wouldn't have even noticed!! Cheers and happy stitching! ❤
Thank you so much for your comment. I see my improvement too. I think all quilters should know that our first attempts don't mean we should give up. Happy stitching. Best, K
Love all your show and tell, the re-framed piece(s) is/are lovely. I always enjoy watching what you’ve been stitching on and what you’ve chosen for the upcoming days/weeks/months. Laughing at your story about learning to free-motion quilt and how your feathers look like fingers. Well, Karen, at least they don’t look like the ominous male part like mine did😂 - and there it was, dangling, for all to see. Happily it was the same color thread as the border and was nicely camouflaged. Oh brother!! It does take practice and more practice, and then, some more😅 - happy that you’ve landed in just one place now. I guess it’s true what they say when they say - “there’s no place like (the original) home.” 😉 - Barb in Tucson
Barb, Your comment really made me laugh. I use the term fingers or hot dogs, but I am really thinking what you said. I try to be a bit dignified on camera. Thank you so much for stopping by. Happy stitching. Best, K
Amen to saving your wrist! I cut a bunch of fruit for my daughter. Later my wrist paid for it. Congrats on reaching 4K Long winding road is lovely. Have a great week
Congrats selling your mobile home. Your framed pieces are so pretty. Don't undersell yourself, all of your quilts are beautiful. I love seeing them. Marilyn
Your framed pieces are beautiful! Lots of pretty eye candy today, Karen. Congrats on selling your Florida home. That must be a big relief, though your trip there and back didn't sound like fun. Take care, and happy stitching/quilting, Arleen
Thank you so much for you sweet comment. Yes, I am happy to be able to move forward without being locked in to being in FL for half of my life. Happy stitching. Best, K
Congratulations on selling your place in Florida! It must be a relief to have that wrapped up. I really admire people who multi craft. I decided a long time ago that cross stitching was going to be my craft of choice. I dabbled in other crafts, but I seemed to be most drawn to, and have a greater success with, cross stitch. So I cleared out all the other craft materials to make way for my cross stitch supplies. The problem for you, as I see it, is that you are an equally incredible stitcher as you are a quilter! I don't know how you could choose only one if you had to. Good luck finding a happy balance between the two😊. I'm sure you'll find a way!
Maureen, Thank you so much for your comment. I am sure that I will struggle finding a balance, but I can't choose just one. I appreciate your input. Happy stitching. Best, K
Lovely video, Karen. Congratulations again on 4K subscribers! Love following all your progress. The park bench quilt is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.
So nice to see you today Karen! Hope you had a wonderful 4th. Congratulations on the selling of your home! 🏠 I am enjoying your video, stitching, quilting …. Everything you do!♥️
I struggle with doing all of the same hobbies….it’s really easy for me to just cross stitch after returning to it during the pandemic. Since retiring 3 years ago, I try to touch my quilting at least one hour every day prior to any cross stitching. I recently sorted all of my quilting stash and found the amount mentally overwhelming so after donating/reselling bags and bags of stash, I made a commitment to working it down further. I realized two things…. 1. I have to touch my quilting at least a minimum of one hour a day and 2. If I buy any new fabric, it has to be stitched in a project in the next two months and cannot be put in my stash…. 🥴 I’ve mostly stuck to it and usually quilt more than one hour once I get started. Thanks for another fun and thoughtful video Karen! Lori
Wow! That is such a great comment. You have really struggled with the same issue I have. I haven't gotten rid of any of my quilting stash. I still intend to move forward with quilting so I would be upset if I had gotten rid of something that "I could have used." It really is a sickness. I appreciate your input. I will keep you updated on what I come up with. Happy stitching. Best, Karen
@@recoveringmonogamousstitch1947 It truly is a sickness! 😂 It was hard reducing the stash but I kept imagining the burden I might dump on my husband if something happened to me. That made it much easier to keep only what I love.💕 Good luck with your plan Karen. Lori
Congratulations on selling your house in Florida. I'm sure that's a great relief. I am both a quilter and cross stitcher and what I try to do is sew in the afternoon after lunch for a couple of hours and then in the evening while I'm watching tv I do my cross stitching. There are lots of days when I don't get to sew but when I do that's usually how the time is divided. Love your quilt. You do a very nice job on both the piecing and quilting.
Karen...it is wonderful seeing you...congratulations on selling your home and 4K subscribers...love everything you shared...the quilt is beautiful ...best wishes ❤❤
Congratulations on selling your Florida home. On to the next chapter. Regarding a quilting and cross stitch balance…this is what works for me…I quilt in the morning and cross stitch in the evening. I almost never do it the other way around. As for the afternoon….that can go either way. I’m a morning person and get most tasks, jobs or out of the house things done in the morning and I’m good with whatever time is left for quilting. I do have many days with no quilting but almost never miss a day of cross stitch. Partly that’s because I cross stitch during ‘down time’ but need more energy and alertness to work on a quilt. Pam
Pam, Thank you so much for sharing your plan for keeping up with both of your passions. I am currently in my sewing room in the morning and my stitchy chair in the afternoon. I almost never sew in the evening. My eyes are over it. I love your channel so much and I am thrilled that you watch mine. Happy stitching. Best, K
Congrats on selling your Florida property, now you can choose when and where to travel whenever you want! Your newly framed pieces are beautiful; the right frame really adds to the beauty of your stitching. Thanks so much for sharing your time & talents with us! Happy Stitching ! xoxo
Thank you so much for your comment on my video. I am relieved to have the FL home sold. I didn't realize when we bought how much I would be constrained by not having access to my sewing room for a long period of time. Mr. Enabler is OK with the change, so we will move forward. See you again soon. Best, K
A good balance between quilting and stitching is what makes you happy at that moment. I have an accumulation of 38 years of quilting, and now that I'm stitching for 2 1/2 years, the only quilting I do is making my own quilted project bags. Now that's a balance I'm happy with!😁
Thank you for letting me know that you have found a balance that works for you. I just don't feel like I am over making quilts, so I will keep on keeping on. Happy stitching. Best, K
Re: the non-slip tape on the back of your rulers, I found some clear anti-slip stair tread tape on Amazon. It is 1” wide. I cut it into 1/4 inch wide strips and lay it on the edges of my rulers. It works great. One roll is MORE than enough, so I often share with friends.
Congratulations on selling your home. Your reframed stitches turned out beautifully. Karen you have such inspiring stitches. The quilting is gorgeous on your quilt . No advice on balancing but hope you get some helpful ideas. Fun FT.
I keep collecting fabric and trying to figure out how to get back to quilting. Cross stitching took over with floss tube. I look forward to reading your comments on this video. Glad the house sale is behind you. Framed stitching is beautiful!
It is the same with me. Flosstube just turned my sewing world upside down. I am currently in my sewing room in the a.m. and in my stitchy chair in the p.m. So far it is working out. It feels good to be making some quilting progress again. See you soon. Best, K
Enjoyed watching and seeing your beautiful stitching and quilting. I cross-stitch mostly at night and quilt/sew during the day. I also "quilt" with a friend(s) on Fridays via FaceTime and that helps with accountability to work on quilting UFOs/WIPs. Looking forward to attending Central KY Stitchers with you tomorrow. See you soon!
Oh so glad you have it sold! Congratulations 🎉 all look great but yes cinnamon stars frame does compliment it well. Wonder how many people sang long and winding road every time you said it besides me along with strawberry fields forever. Lol ❤ hmm I am no good at suggesting a plan as I only do what I want. 😅after writing that I realized that I have been monogamous since Feb on the full coverage, unless car stitching. But when I don’t have something I just need to get done, I can say oh will do… and then nope don’t feel like it. Good luck figuring both!
Cindy, Your comment made me laugh. I get those songs going through my head and can't make them stop. Such happy memories. I am happy to know that you are just doing what you want on any day and stitching what you feel like. I feel like I have more quilts in me and I have invested a lot in my machines. I want to keep doing both. I am working it out. Happy stitching. Best, K
So glad everything is moved from Florida. And it’s a good time to purge the closet. I love the newly framed pieces. It was a good idea to freshen them up. Now that you are home full time, I bet you will find your needlework balance.
Maybe split your days so that you stitch in the morning and quilt in the afternoon. I will usually take 2-3 days of a week to work on a quilting project. Love the framed pieces. Jaybird is a favorite pattern designer. I love her geometric shapes. She bought Lazy Girl Designs sometime after Joan Hawley passed away. Such a loss to the community but I’m glad the company will go on. Happy stitching!
Thank you for suggesting a way to balance my two passions. I think I have settled on a.m. quilting and p.m. stitching. I will see how it continues to work out. I didn't know that Joan Hawley had passed away. So sad. See you again soon. Best, K
Karen I loved how you come up with different quilting designs. I really enjoy seeing them. Congratulations on selling your house. That's a great feeling. Carol saltbox she quilts in the morning & stitches at nite. It's hard to come up with a happy medium 😂 Have a great 2 weeks.Great video❤
Thank you for your comment on the video. I am currently in my sewing room in the a.m. and in my stitchy chair in the p.m. It is working so far. See you again soon. Best, K
When I came back to cross stitching I would work on quilts during the day and stitch in the evenings. Slowly the stitching took over and the only machine I have touched in months is my serger to finish the edges of all the stitching fabric that has entered the house! 😂 I‘lol be interested to see how you balance both crafts.
Isn't it funny how our sewing worlds have been turned upside down? So far, I am in my sewing room in the morning and my stitchy chair in the afternoon. I rarely sew after dinner. My eyes are over it by then. See you again soon. Best, K
Strawberry Fields and Cinnamon Stars look amazing! I also love the quilt! I do both cross stitch and quilting. How I spend my time varies between my mood! LOL. In general I sit at my machine more in the morning and early afternoon. Then I turn to my cross stitch later in the day. Good luck with the closet clean out. I need to do that too. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your comment. I am thrilled with how the reframing worked out. At this point, I am in my sewing room in the a.m. and in my stitchy chair in the p.m. It is working so far. See you again soon. Best, K
Quilting and cross stitch, in the morning I sew my quilting projects and in the afternoon I stitch my cross stitch projects. But the hours of the Dany never are enough 😂
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your input. Others are also saying, morning for quilting, afternoon/evening for cross stitch. I will let you know what I come up with. Happy stitching. Best, K
I tend to do quilting (sewing) projects in the morning. I find that if I sit down to crossstitch (or to do any slow stitching), I get caught up in it and before I know it, the entire day is gone. If I’m really into the quilting project I’m working on, I will sometimes go back to that after lunch and pick up my handwork later in the evening.
When you figure out the balance, do tell… I used to cross stitch monogamously; and quilted a A LOT! About 3 years ago, rediscovered cross stitch with the linen and over-dyes, and floss tube. Now I’m cross stitching along with wool appliqué and very little quilting. When I’m not watching grandchildren, I tend to piece in the morning and cross stitch in the evening.
This is a common theme. We used to quilt all the time, but now are cross stitching. Floss tube is to blame LOL. I will share my working plan (for the time being) on my next video. Happy stitching. Best, K
Congratulations on selling your Florida house. What a relief that must be! Look at my name. I don't have any set routine for dividing my time between cross stitch and quilting, but usually I cross stitch in the morning and then quilt in the afternoon - or maybe not. If you consider the quilting you did on that quilt to be kindergarten level, I can't wait to see what you do now!
How funny. We both have names that pretty much define us. I am more successful with a set schedule. I showed my best ever quilt in video #1. If you missed it, you might want to check out the end of that video. Happy stitching. Best, K
Maybe having the same birth year means something 😊 my college sorority big sister called me her “out-to-lunch” little sister. Turns out I have ADHD and it has certainly affected my ability to focus, but occasionally I hyper-focus and then am monogamous.
Happy to hear you sold your FL home. Downsizing is not easy. Beautiful frames for your finished projects. I look forward to seeing what viewers post on how they divide their time. I have a difficult time setting aside enough time to get back to quilting. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your comment. It is a work in progress, but right now I am quilting in the a.m. and stitching in the p.m. I will adjust it depending on what project needs to take priority. Happy stitching. Best, K
Hi, Karen, lovely visit. You caught my attention when you used the term slippy, which I don't hear often from others outside of SW PA. Are you from that area or ever lived there? Your stitching is beautiful! The new frames, especially the frame for Cinnamon Starts look wonderful! (seeing your Cinnamon Stars is starting me to think I might need to pull out mine and get it started!) Happy Stitching! Lynn
Lynn, No, I have never lived in PA. I was born and raised in west Michigan. A very Dutch area. Maybe that is where I heard it. Happy stitching. Best, K
Thank you so much for your sweet comment on my video. I am happy to be back in my sewing room and feeling like I have time to work on big projects. See you again soon. Best, K
Hello Karen strawberry fields is beautiful. Cinnamon stars is a dream all my favourite colours. Do you make you counting pins? Your WIPS are are awesome. Enjoyed your video and happy stitching
Those frames are great on your pieces. Looking forward to seeing the 3rd piece! Congratulations on selling your Florida home, and I have the same issue with needing to pare down my clothing collection to get rid of things I really no longer need after being retired for 8 years.
Thank you for your comment. I love the reframed pieces too. I have made significant progress going through my clothes. Good Will has gotten a ton. I have one more closet to go through. Phew. I'll be glad when that is done. See you again soon. Best, K
My search continues to make time for my stitching and my quilting. I try to do my quilting earlier in the day and then stitch later in the day. My quilting also came to an abrupt end when I rediscovered cross stitch. I will be very interested in reading the other comments and find out what your plan is.
Congratulations on selling your FL home and your 4K subscribers. Your reframes look wonderful! I can’t find a good balance of my quilting and cross stitching. Hope you can do better. Let me know what works. Happy stitching!
Thank you so much for your comment. I am thrilled with the results of reframing. I am working on a balance of my two passions. I will continue to report on it. Happy stitching. Best, K
Sorry Karen, I have to say to you that "praline" is not necessarily a British and American pronunciation. In Louisiana it is always "pr(ah)line". Other parts of the country may be praline. Just like some people say "pecan" but a lot say "pec(ha)n. Happy stitching, Scarlett
Scarlett, Thank you for that input. I have heard it both ways. But, the OED disagrees with both of us. I will still stumble on it because I hear it both ways. Happy stitching. Best, K
Karen, you made me stop the video and order the cute little cross stitch from Tasmania. Had to have it! What fabric did they stitch it on? And floss color? Please and Thank You.
The model is stitched on Just the Ticket from Tabby Cat. The model was stitched with 100.3 silk #664, but a conversion for DMC calls for 321 (that bright Christmas red). I haven't made my linen or thread choices yet. Let me know what you decide. I would love to know. Best, K

Looks like you have chosen some more large gals to work on, the Smith Sampler is gorgeous.
I was thrilled to have Norma's name pop up. What a surprise. Yes, I have a bunch of big girls on the go. See you soon. Best, K
The frames for Strawberry Fields Forever & Cinnamon Stars are absolutely beautiful! Cinnamon Stars really pops! Beautiful!
I agree. I am thrilled with the results of the reframing.
Wow how beautiful cinnamon and stars looks with that frame. A beautiful frame can make or break a stitched project.
Best, K
I am always amazed by your quilts, just beautiful. Congrats on your Florida sell...on to new adventures!
Yes I do make my counting pins. I am thrilled with the how the reframing worked out. I'll see you again soon. Best, K
Thank you so much for sharing. That seems like a good balance for you. I will keep you posted on what works out for me. Happy stitching. Best, K
Thanks Karen!! I emailed you. Can’t make July stitch but will be there in august! See you then. I love cinnamon stars!!
Thanks so much, Norma. I will hold the bag until our August meet-up. See you soon. Best, K
Happy stitching,
Scarlett
Best, K
