    Mike invited me into his home and sat with me while he tuned calls. His wife offered to cook me supper while we played with duck calls. He let me play with about 30 calls in his collection. I bought one from him and will be my go to call this season. If you haven’t listened to his calls you need to give Challenger calls a shot. He is a great listen to hunting’s past in the area. I enjoyed my time with him.

    Another good one Joel. It’s really cool to watch a craftsman do his thing when making a call. I remember sitting with Ken Martin several times over the years a watch him make his duck and Goose calls. He could just look at the guts of a call and knew exactly what it needed.Enjoy how you cover the entire scope of the waterfowl experience. God Bless and keep em coming

      @@SurvivingDuckSeason His goose calls ruled southern Illinois goose hunting for years. Up until the flute call started making its mark. His little duck call was also impressive.

    Got a yensen sureshot....+35 yrs old never replaced the reeds or wedge. It has been refinished -stained and poly'd 2x. Sounds as good as it did when I got it. I use a dollar bill in the field to floss the reed

    I have a RnT -Bois D'Arc barrel with a plastic insert that I have had since 2001.. I have never cleaned or removed the insert or replaced anything. It was tuned by Butch and it is still my go too!!! I've but many new calls since then but when in the blind and birds are flying.. I grab old reliable and she talks them right on in.... it's the raspiest old hen sounding call I've had... and I dip snuff the while calling... I would say it has tons of character

      It's just reed material, so you wont ruin your calls.

  • @mattcoastal2898

    Does the squeak/squeal sound come from the call or is it how the person calls? I can get a Cajun squeal on my RNT micro hen but struggle on other calls.

    Hi Joel, I was wondering what I could do if my tone board and barrel won't come apart? Love the videos! You even inspired my dad to buy some High n Drys. Also, I would love to enter a giveaway! Thanks for understanding! Please subscribe to Utah Outdoorboys, it would be much appreciated!

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason

      You might try putting your call in the freezer overnight. When you take it out of the freezer, immediately try to take it apart. It’s worked for me.

    You should have moved the camera over the top of him & showed him making each cut on the reed.

  • @lucienfontenelle3860
    @lucienfontenelle3860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You both checked your reeds to see what way they naturally bent, but neither of you said whether the bend should be up or down!

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, i guess we accidentally edited that out (whoops). You want the is the inside of the bow to lay against the tone board. Sorry we missed that, and thanks for pointing it out!

    BLOWING TIPS OFF REEDS ONCE A WEEK?!

  • @robbwatts4404
    @robbwatts4404 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thats not the correct way to put a reed and cork in a duck call.
    A reed has a top and a bottom. When you put the reed length ways in between your thumb and index finger and slightly bend the reed the part of the reed that bends away from you is the part of the reed that goes down on the tone board. Then you place the reed all the way to the back of the tone board while you have the cork in your mouth, while doing this never let go of the reed you don't want the reed to come away from the back of the tone board. While holding the top of the reed on top of the tone board cut the cork as close to the edge of the cork slot. Never let go of the reed until the cork is set perfectly.
    Then you start cutting your reed if it's a new reed, if it's an old reed always know when you put a new cork in a call it will make the call easier to blow.
    It takes a lot of practice, always order more reeds and cork than what you think you will need.

    Grrr. Ive had to learn all these things the hard way alone in a duck desert. Remember your first Olt or whatever? Had this little piece of paper instructions.
    Said something like "say tah tah tah or kaw kaw kaw". Total garbage. Good calls. Bad instructions.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, back in the day the instructions were pitiful. LOL

  • @Artisanwoodworks73
    @Artisanwoodworks73 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow! If you're blowing of a duck call is costing you money to replace reeds etc, then you're blowing your call wayyyy too hard. Back down on the voice some. More people need to understand that calling ducks is a soft easy thing. If you're in the right spot, you don't need to call at all. The ducks are going to see your spread and come to you. If you see ducks flying in a V, chances are there's no amount of calling that will make those ducks lock up and turn. The "ball" of ducks though WILL turn though. Don't blow when ducks are coming towards you either. Blow at the back end of them .
