Ive been studying patternmaking and garment production for a couple of years and its hilarious how many “designers” ive met that dont know how to thread a sewing machine much less design a pattern themselves 😅
I just got finished sewing a new pair of jeans for myself, but as a screen printer I don't see how needing to now how to sew is a determining factor on whether you can start a brand or not. I screen print for my own brand and I don't sew any of those clothes. I just design and print the actual graphics, and trust me, I'd MUCH rather sit inside and sew than sweat over that press in the garage... smh
I make my own designs & I sew my own samples. But I do outsource other tasks I don’t specialize in. But tbh this just seems like the layout for any major company or brand. But I love your opinion on the topic it helps to understand consumers
4:10 I think another thing about the smaller quality brands is that people won’t purchase items from them in fear of them being the same as these TikTok streetwear brands. If I see brands promoting clothing on social media I’m always skeptical to buy from them because of these fast fashion brands, but I also might be missing great brands that have quality products because of this.
you just have to look deeper. behind all the shitty fast fashion atlanta streetwear clones, there are some geniunely amazing brands with a purpose and good designs.
I really wanted to enjoy this video but the use of "often times" was too frequent and grammatically incorrect. It distracted from your point and was frustrating. I would recommend having someone read over your script if you haven't already.
This also happens in the Tim Tok and IG fitness space. A lot of copy/paste fitness clothing lines where it’s obvious they buy pieces from an online catalog and slap their logo on them. And the pieces are the same since it’s gym wear. Oversized tees (pump tees) and joggers for men, sports bra and bicycle shorts for women. They just color combo it, model it, and it sells.
all these brands are so buns, just monotone garments with awful logos and really bad graphic designs. what i want to see is plain clothing made with love, featuring interesting cuts and fits. We'll never get that though
This is why my brand only uses the highest quality blanks from North America. Too many fast fashion brands with shitty heat press prints. I'm trying to set my myself apart!
you still focused on the capitalist part of fashion, most fashion houses became famous because of original work they’ve made that people like. these are ppl who are straight up trying to make a quick buck and framing it as a “brand”.
Im mutuals on tiktok with the brand at 8:50 😭😭, they are putting the work in but i can see how its grouped with everything else, theyve been posting a lot for quite a while
Personally, I'm still not a fan of online shopping for clothing UNLESS I'm familiar with that brand, their fit, materials, designs etc... People that buy from these brands more often than not are just trying to support them or they've seen an influencer endorse it. Also, a lot of these "Brands" go on sites like Alibaba and just by the exact same pre-made designs and slap their logos on it. No quality control, no actual design or involvement in the craftsmanship or any of that. It's a quick flip hustle at the end of the day. If that's the type of business you're dealing with, expect things like low quality, bad customer service and even potentially getting finessed.
This video was good but a tad repetitive...you repeated the idea that brands lacked storytelling several times. It would have been nice to get examples of the storytelling that you were talking about. Comparing brands that did storytelling well & brands that didn't. As well as what storytelling even means when it comes to a streetwear brand, how is that important for brand identity, like even defining what is a brand identity and why it's important as well. I enjoyed the video! Keep up the good work. Anyway! I hope this comes off as hate, I genuinely think critique is the best thing for creatives to grow.
This is very frustrating to brands like our self who believe we are very original and have something more to offer people than just clothes. They are just good at social media cause it’s their life…
My advice as a creative director is not rush to become a e-commerce brand. They lack substance and you can meet your customers in person. That advice may vary based on where you live.
Facts. I find that popup shops are the best way to sell product, meet your customer base, AND get LIVE feedback from people coming to check out your stuff. Popup shops are the way to go
I refused to be like that, even if it takes me years to blowup,I’m not looking for a quick buck,I’ll build my community through connecting with people and go from there,I’ll last longer 😊😊
This is ALL brands. They’re using the exact same formula they all are. Marketing is where the “storytelling” comes from. It’s literally someone’s job to create that story and make it interesting.
Good thing here in my country we have COD or cash on delivery at least I can wait for months and months without worrying if I am going to receive my product or not.
If you're really interested in making a brand, try it. Don't just keep watching videos or paying for classes, put that money and effort into actually making a brand. You're probably not going to make money because your order size is too small, and the quality is not going to be great because you don't know who to get to manufacture, but you'll meet people with similar drives and dreams who are willing to take the plunge instead of sitting on the sides and peacocking like they know what they're doing.
This is why it’s so hard for a brand like ours to gain organic traffic but it will happen and im super grateful for the small community we’ve built so far…. We care so much about quality but that is a fading factor in streetwear these days they (the algorithms) just seem to want microwaved trends, the hell star templated sweatsuits/big face cropped tees
Great video, but for the love of god stop repeating the same shit over and over again, do you not have a script or something? Also your points on preorders isn't great. Usually it's made very clear that you're ordering a preorder, and especially for smaller brands that don't know how many order they'll get, preorders are a good way to keep the business profitable, while also being more sustainable than just submitting an order of like, 500 and hoping more than 15 people will actually buy the product.
You mention the importance of storytelling so much, I think it's a very niche concern. When I want storytelling, I read a book. I'm more interested in quality and style when it comes to clothes.
Story allows you to give context to a piece of clothing it's less about telling a literal story and more about curating a sense of the world that the clothes exist in because devoid of that it would be very difficult to do any branding
This is such a pretentious take, fashion or art in general should not be gatekept for only the induviduals who can innovate an original idea, the whole point of art is so that induviduals can consume something that makes them happy no matter how much they are willing to pay for it, or how unoriginal it is, obviously people are buying these clothes because they like the way it looks. Stop being pretentious and let people buy and sell art that they think is cool without judgment

There is a lot of unnecessary hate in this video, There’s no problem with using resources as long as your vision comes to life. Very pessimistic take, I would love to see you build a brand from scratch and see your marketing skills and storyline
I wouldn't call them fashion brands, anybody can just print something on t-shirt or hoodie 😂 there's a difference from actual designer brands
Yes
They dont even make their own design… most are just ai generated
One of the biggest reason why I only wear blank t shirt and hoodie. The cut, colour and quality is 3 things you need to look for your clothing.
Designer brands also sometimes put their logo on plain hoodies and call it a day. Like supreme.
