closing dialogue?? so good!! just put a smile on this old boy's face and ya, when we watched the first two buckets go up the ladder, it's like, "No way is that (full bucket) gonna be possible" Look after the body Matt. You wanna be old and not in pain all the time...trust me. Great episode Kristen. You're a wonderful film maker!😊
Matt, you can buy full size and half size concrete blocks flat on all 4 sides for the corners, door, and window openings. Then you don't have to mess with all that forming and mixing and pouring concrete. Use a .25 steel plate cut oversized end to end for the headers of the openings. Also, put mortar on the edge of each block before you place them, tying the blocks together end to end. The wife is looking cute in those overalls. Great video! Thanks
I know Kristen does a great job with the editing, but if I had my ring hanging out, and rain was coming or it was getting dark, and my wife didn't show me some sort of solidarity by doing what she could to help me, I would be pissed off! Surely she could load the mixer with half shovels, or move the ladder along, or SOMETHING ??
@@grahamcifuentes4451 . Couldnt agree more. My mum was the brickys labourer for my dad when he built our first house. All double brick walls and she had a 3 year old and an eight year old to look after.
The corners and door openings are already formed and filled with concrete so this advice seems a little late. Kristen can't easily film herself working so how do you know that she isn't helping? That's great that your wives can lift 80 lb bags of concrete mix but not all women are built like Andre the Giant.
was a great plan to see how hard it will be to do a whole house...now you know Matt...You have such a strong work ethic, and a pretty good sense oh how to do stuff, don't apologize, for learning on the job. Everything you have put your mind too has turned out fine....cheers
Dear Uncle Matty -- you don't need to impress me with your muscle flexing building skill 💪 Honestly watching you pet a kitty cat for 10 minutes would keep me coming back every Sunday ❤
Great work I dug out and placed a concrete basement floor in my old Maine farmhouse 35 years ago. used the recipe from an AH Harris catalog for the mixture. It has been 100% reliable without any spalling, cracks or other issues. I still do jobs using the same cheap mixer that i bought all those years ago. A cheap concrete vibrator from Harbor Freight is my latest tool for this type of work. Worth its weight in gold.
Personally, I would have built a Sand Sifter... A rectangular 2 X 4 frame and staple 1/4" mesh over it. Then sift you sand and/or gravel through it. The larger rocks can't go through the 1/4" mesh, so you just pick them off and they never get into your concrete mix... You're welcome... Next time... 🙂
I love your “learning” attitude. Learning by doing is the most effective approach. It is sometimes time consuming, but the lessons build upon each other.
Matt , sir , did anyone remind you, that to put a nice finish on the face of the poured concrete , you have to go around the wood as its being pourd with a hammer , and tap the wood from bottom to the top on the face of the wood , not too hard now , and that will put a smoothe face on the concrete. trust me brother , it works . P.S. youre doing a great job man .
Still watching but all my brain can think of is that there are no limits to what Matt will try when he has no clue. Taking DIY to another stratosphere. I love the “can do” attitude of both of you.

hay matt its all a learning curve and when you have to do this by yourself you learn as you go and next time you do something like this it will go easy

Hey Matt, I’m an old mason and you could use white vinegar clean your hands get that cement out of your skin and of course you know you soap get vinegar yeah you’re not supposed to touch the cement with your hands yet what you call strawberries you were wearing it Matt anyway looks like you did a good job on. It just held a lot of work the way you did it, but it’s impressive of all the hard work you do I like how your wife says we
Super important! Good call Master Mason. The vinegar acidifies the alkaline cement, which is why the resultant potential burn can be dangerous. Like requiring amputation. I used a scant tablespoon splashed over my hands when finished for day's work, after I wash hands well with bar soap. Symptom of blood infection is red vein lines spreading away for tip of fingers and hands in general. See a doctor! All this also keeps hands softer. The We folks tend to appreciate that. ;-)
I’m still trying to understand why you didn’t put mortar between the ends of the blocks. I worked construction for several years and I’ve NEVER seen block laid without mortar between the ends. Plus I’ve never seen a block wall finished at the corners and ends with cement like you’re doing. Traditionally you always just cut the block smooth and block up the widows and doors to a semi finished size then trim it out to finish size with wood.
You are a working fool. What a beast. Mixed concrete like you are while building schools and churches in Ecuador and El Salvador on missions trips. That’s how they do it. Much respect young man.
Matty, you are doing a great job. I would recommend a tripod made from 4 x 4's with a simple pulley system to raise and lower those buckets. Use a. two pulley system and cut the weight in half. It will save your body and time in the overall. The pulleys can be small like 2" in diameter. Remeber sailboats?! haha. Pull in the sheets!
😂😂😂 love you guys, the work was hard and the closing dialogue was fun 😊 keep up the hard work and it will pay off. Has a suspicion though that you have to do some extra work when the forms are removed.
Good to get this type work done now while you are younger and able. I can easily say that once age sets in over decades, A lot of that type work can still ne done, but at a much, much slower pace... Thumbs Up!
Love Captain Matty's work ethic and sense of humor! Can't wait until he gets to the "I want to learn how to do all the wiring" part. Wishing you both all the best.

1:56 Sand, rock & Cement by CORRECT PROPORTION can result in a GREAT RESULT. Matt from THIS: Professional Engineer I HOPE your project turns out: PERFECT! 👍
YOu might build a screen and run your sand through it. That way you have a consistent sized sand and you can save the larger rocks for a slab in the future.
Typically on block fill concrete you should use no bigger than 3/8” aggregate. Rent a Stinger concrete vibrator to eliminate the voids that you will probably have around your door and windows. Need to find a small conveyer to help you get material up instead of using buckets. I can understand that a pump is cost prohibitive.
What we do down here is filer the aggregate before mixing. Take some 2 x 4 set yourself up a frame get yourself thick fencing or chicken wire and staple it to the frame.. double up as needed to set max pass through, then shovel the sand through the frame.. It will remove larger rocks etc that you do not really want in your mix. Other than that .. Good work

Great video guys! Matt is one of the hardest working guys I've ever seen. I could of used ten people like him when I was a contractor. Good job on the pour. It's always better to take your time and do it right the first time. 😀
Matt, come on! Just lay the block with square corners. Good to see that you are using a mixer and using a sand and concrete mix. won't need gravel for morter mix. You could use a circular saw with a grit type blade to cut openings if needed. Either way you do it, it is always hard work. I am sure you will get better, just like the boat lamming. Love you guys and the videos!
You need two T-shirts... the one from before is "Work Harder Not Smarter". The second one should be check boxes for Easy Way and Hard Way with the hard way checked. :)
For grouting the walls you should not be using the aggregate, it should be a grout mix not concrete. And your mortar joints are too small, they should be 3/8”. I worry you are going to have issues. For concrete forms you should consider using some form release agent
I’ve been thinking for months, where are your gloves. Glad to see you wearing them now. Concrete work will dry your hands out really quick. Keep up the great work Mr studly!
Matt you are not alone with a concrete blowout, every person has pour any concrete has had the same problem that you did. Great recovery and you opinion on screws or nails is dead on, use too many since once the form fails you are in recovery mode
There should be a way to do this job just like you did, then read all the comments from people with experience and redo the job for the actual laundry room and battery placement building. Smiling, am always impressed by many of the experienced and well meaning comments.
In lieu of a proper vibration compactor you can use a sawzall without a blade and run it over the wall to get the forms completely compacted. Nice work both of you, love watching the team work 💫
Hi Matt & Cristien ., good to see again every Sunday, Matt the hardest working man I’ve ever seen, Sometimes I want to call you Crazy Manic, would amaze us with your hard work and dedication and time Like Eveready battery - you keep going and going I’m shaking my head just watching you man, you’re killing it👍
It is so much fun hearing you two argue. It means my wife and I are not the only ones. 😂😂Remember your wife is always right!!! Matt, you should have ordered washed sand and pea gravel. Four foot lifts for the grout is pretty standard in the construction world to avoid pockets. At least you roded the grout. Thanks for the fun. Architect Dave
Hey it’s looking good. I think this will work great. When completed you’ll see it was all worth the efforts. Looking forward in seeing the next steps. Sun power soon! 😅
If you are considering using that concrete mixer on your house build on anything higher than 5-6', consider making a device that will haul the full mixer up to your block level and being able to tip mixer and pour cement into block holes. Think of the electric lift devices that roofers attach to ladders to bring stacks of asphalt shingles up to roof edge- only more sturdy, rising platform remains horizontal and need method to hold mixer securely.
We used to set up an angled screen to shovel the sand thru ! Appropriate size holes in screen to filter larger stones out! Then once you have adequate strained use that to mix in!
Famous last words Matt, "it should be straight forward" you did a good job all in all. That's coming from a man who hasn't got off the couch in 5 years. 😂😂
“Hope you didn’t burn your nipples off” 😂 You guys are too funny. Matt, the easiest way to handle the window and door openings is to frame the openings with lumber the width of the block that will stay permanently in place (window/door bucks). The rough openings should be 1” larger than the windows and door jamb. Then attach the forms to the bucks. Drill holes in the bucks and install j-bolts through the bucks so that when you put the concrete, they’ll hold the bucks in place permanently. Pouring concrete in the block is called grouting and typically has aggregate no larger than 1/4 pea gravel.
When building the roof, maybe go with eves all the way around on all sides. An over hang will help protect the windows. May even be able to keep open for a little for air flow. Plus, you would only need shingles to finish.
Love the effort!! I do a lot of the stuff you are doing. It does not have perfect. It just needs to be functional and well built. Which you always do! With all the projects you have to do. Do yourself a favor and buy some used scaffolding. It will make everything easier and save your body. It's not a big investment and wellworth it!! They changed my life!! Game changer! Keep up the great work!! Love watching!!
Luv you two your great together ,what a brilliant entertaining channel to watch. Will you please make your videos longer cuz I don't want them to end. It should be Sunday every day, can't wait until next Sunday.MAL. From the UK.xxxxxxx
Matt . Your a real trooper I know everyone has a better way to do anything . I got to chip in : Obviously , ordering a truck load of grout and a concrete pumper would have be much faster and less work . Next time order p-gravel it flowing into tight spaces much better and you won't have voids and rock pockets . Great video i got exhausted just watching you. cheers
So funny people in these comments like omg that was such a bad job i can't believe it! Lol who cares everyone has to learn somewhere jeese negative Nancy's......dont listen to these negative comments your doing a good job perfection takes time
You two crack me up! 😂 Well done on the block work mate, I haven't seen it done like that before so I am learning something new, I am a brickie by trade and the walls look plum and square, that's what matters, I'm looking forward to the reveal... Much love and respect.... Juddy...

Matt...u da man bro. Florida boy is kicking it. I love you guys keep kicking it

Here in Maine, we have ample supplies of lobster bibs to protect your forward-facing parts. Let us know and we will ship you a bale.
That s a hell of a lot of work you got big chimeras 😊
Luv you two your great together ,what a brilliant entertaining channel to watch. Will you please make your videos longer cuz I don't want them to end. It should be Sunday every day, can't wait until next Sunday.MAL. From the UK.xxxxxxx
Matt . Your a real trooper I know everyone has a better way to do anything . I got to chip in : Obviously , ordering a truck load of grout and a concrete pumper would have be much faster and less work . Next time order p-gravel it flowing into tight spaces much better and you won't have voids and rock pockets . Great video i got exhausted just watching you. cheers
If you screen your gravel you can get rid of larger stone and make live easer
