Mosca Campground - San Luis State Wildlife Area

- Mosca Campground is located in San Luis State Wildlife Area near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The former state park changed to a state wildlife area in 2017, changing the rules for Mosca Campground. Electrical hookups are still functional and are free to use. Reservations are not accepted.
The wildlife area north of the campground is closed from Feb. 15 until July 15

Elevation: 7510 ft
Fee per Night: Free access to State Wildlife Areas if you have a Colorado Fishing or Hunting License. Otherwise, a $36 pass is required for anyone ages 18-64
Total Campsites: 51
Reservations are not accepted
Cell Service: Yes. Both AT&T & Verizon
14 day limit within a 45 day period
Open - Year Round, although it appears that some loops are closed off during the slower season. Loop B was closed for our April visit

Max RV Length - This campground can handle all sizes
RV dump station located near the campground was covered in April 2019. Not sure if it opens in the summer.

Non-motorized boating on San Luis Lake
Biking & Hiking on 4 miles of gravel trail within the wildlife area. Note the area north of the campground is closed from Feb. 15 until July 15 for wildlife nesting season

Thanks for posting! We need a single fill in night after Zapata Falls on an upcoming trip. This is very helpful. We also relied on your video for the Ute Campground (FS) near Chimney Rock between Pagosa Springs and Durango. There we no photos or anything online about Ute except your video. Keep up the good work.
Ute Campground was probably the blindest reservation I ever made. I apologized to my wife saying I had no clue what it was like and somebody should record a video of it. 😂
I think the contrast between the mountains and the higher altitude desert landscape is fantastic. Well worth experiencing for a few days. Besides, sometimes you just want to do nuthin'.
It's a good spot for doing nothing! Pretty good base camp for some mountain activities as well.
Definitely a very boaring campground, probably wouldn't be my first choice... But on the flip side the free electricity and the fact you can camp for free with a hunting/fishing license are some perks. I would agree if my intent was to spend most of my time exploring Alamosa and the Sand Dunes, than I might consider this campground. Either way it's nice to know that it is there! 😎👍
Didn't know this was no longer a state park, but not surprised. I camped here at this campground back in 2014 over labor day weekend. Apart from the campground, there is not much to do at this state park. There is really no trails for hiking or mountain biking, nor visitor center, and the lake was pretty much dried up. Actually the campground was a pleasant surprise. The sites were pretty large, they had utilities and there were showers, which is not available over at Pinon. I stayed here because the could not find anything at or near to the Sand Dunes, which is why I was here. Actually I really liked the campground, happy to hear it wasn't closed down, id stay there again.
I heard the showers are closed now. I meant to stop at one of the facilities on the way out to double check but forgot to stop.
@@CampgroundRecon in june 2018 entry required a State Park pass, the showers were closed, there was no potable water but there was a free dump station and 50 amp hookups.
@@TheShootist Thanks for the info on the showers. Hookups were still operational at the time we recorded this video in early 2019.

in the 1970 we would waterski at san luis lakes before there was anything but water and sand. also camped out after prom when they kicked us out of the sand dunes after a guy wreked his car and passedaway.
Hard to imagine water skiing on the lake now. Different times back then
It did not have an out let then so water was warm but signet about a foot of duck dropings on edge of water line and big waterdogs too no fish.
Good information, but I wouldn't stay in this place.Seems too remote and has no trees. Zapata or Pinon are better options.
I agree. I'd only stay here in winter if I couldn't get to the others. Too hot the rest of the year
