  • I've been a fan of Tempest since the original Atari coin-op back in 1981 and it was taken to the next level by Llamasoft in 1994 with Tempest 2000. But in 2018, Tempest 4000 was released and although having played the pre-release demo, it was only recently I managed to get a physical copy for £11! But is it better than Tempest 2000? Lets find out...

Tempest 4000 is a superb game - it has real Vic-20 sound effects. Jeff’s games are fantastic.
Nice to see a video from the shed too..

Great video of a great game.
I can't call between 2000 and 4000, each is amazing on its respective hardware.
Sometimes when playing I'm "in the zone" and can play on and on...other times I seem to get wiped out quickly!!!
I remember playing 2000 on my Jag with you back in the day with the audio blasting!!!

Absolutely right, both have their places. I was asked what T4000 looked like on a PVM, so I may need to set that up for a proper old school vide! I can partially blame you for my total love of Llamasoft Tempest games :)

You can't beat a good old school Jeff Minter game. I've got Tempest 4000 and it's the goat, but my PS4 is out of action at the moment. I do play Gridrunner++ on the PC on a nearly daily basis though, and once you get in the Zone, it's a great way to spend 30 minutes, love the Sheepies. You might want to give Polybius on the PS4 a try if you like the Minter goodness 👍😎

Merry Christmas Barry for next week (well, this weekend really)! Your flashback at the start made me look up your BBC Midlands video back in 2017.... I remember my Mum texting me to say it had been on telly! Feels like about 2-3 years ago max!
What freaks me out is that my boys are 11 and 12 (nearly 13) so same age as your Josh was when you started. In the blink of an eye Josh has shot up and now working! Now I'm looking at my boys and thinking they'll be grown up before I know it!!
Maybe I'm just old and nostalgic cos it's Christmas!
Anyways, Merry Xmas to you both mate and HNY for 2024!

Nice I was lucky to meet Jeff Minter and play the PS4 version in VR at Play Expo Manchester a few years ago sadly VR wasnt added to the retail release due to an objection by Atari hopefully one day it will be added.

Probably the same year we met him and played it on PS4. Play Expo 2018. We have a video on it way back - take a look.

Nice colour - I suspect it looks best on an OLED screen

It certainly does. You’re looking at the capture card there - but yes it does look very nice. Frantic blasting fun - just how I like it :)
