Just love that 343 engine, I believe it is a real hidden gem. I had a new 68 AMX with the 343 engine and go pac. in 68. In 1971 with 35,000 miles, there was an oiling issue. A tear down found little oil to the rear main bearing, a rebuild was done. A hone was all that was needed, new rings, new main and rod bearings, timing chain and new oil pump with a separate oil line to the rear main bearing for positive oiling. A cam change from the original type one cam to the new type 2 cam, or what was the 401 white stripe cam along with valve springs, it had more lift with greater duration over the stock type one cam. An Edelbrock R4b intake and larger Carter carburetor. A set of Cyclone headers with 2 1/2 exhaust , The Bog Warner model 11 trans was rebuilt with the insides from the model 12 which came with the 390 engine. Lastly a rear gear change from 3.15 to 3.73. The 343 engine was making some serious horsepower, as it beat many 340 Chrysler dusters and a few 383 darts of the day. One race against a 1970 AMX with a 390 Go Pac and 4-speed, could not pull in front but stayed even with him to 90mph or so. Love the 343 engine, what a real power house.
