A few months ago we posted our Top 5 Overrated off roaders video, but this time we wanted to get a bit more accurate and focus on 4x4 utes/pickups.
Also, we’ve decided that as that video already included a few utes, we're not going to repeat those particular models in this video, even though they probably deserve to be in this video again.
What did you think of the list? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date with all our latest content.

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

My mate for the price of a Ram he purchased a massive American gooseneck caravan then purchased a crew cab Hino then fitted a turntable hitch to haul caravan. The Hino diesel and it's fuel efficiency and reliability is insane. Oh the caravan is so big he actually lives in it with wife as they are retired. They change their views every week going to a new place. They sold their farm and doing this eliminate paying council property tax saving $3000 per year.

A good percentage of utes, especially the tarted up versions, are solely for manchild peacocking purposes. They get polished, coddled and pointless accessorised to within an inch of their lives. If I inflicted the same regime on my euro hatch I'd be laughed out of town, but somehow cheap plastic bonnet barnacles, 80's style stripe kits, and other unforgivable accessory crimes on a ute is cool and normal...

Agree with the comments on the Hilux - drive a current model regularly at work - terrible ergonomics / uncomfortable seats - average ride & poor fuel consumption. Transmissions overheat and go into limp home mode regularly on hot outback days. They only get the high sales figures because mining companies buy them in their thousands as site vehicles due to reliability. Would hate one as a city drive.

I would honestly put all the American pickups on the list because being mandated by the government to convert them to RHD is just horrible. It makes them laughably expensive and you get a worse vehicle for it while not being any more practical or safer. These are so big you need to hug the outside of the road and they were not made to crash like vehicles driving on the left crash so moving the steering wheel to the other side is pointless at best. Also these are too big for drive-throughs and car parks so there's literally zero need for the driver's seat to be on the right side. Australia is the only country I know that requires cars be converted. It's just an awful law.

Yep the Hilux is probably not that much better, but it is. Because they have fantastic resale and they are more reliable than anything else. Just on those 2 points alone makes them great value for the $$$$$ and that’s why they sell them by the boat load.

    • @trickster8635

More reliable? Show me the proof. Evidence? Just more hype that is put out by owners to justify the reaming they got at Toyota. Don't get me wrong, they are an OK product, but no more OK than many other brands. I think most Toyota purchasers are going for the hype and/or can't be bothered or don't have the mechanical smarts to research the market, and just feel comfortable to sit back and believe the hype/bullshit.

Completely agree with all these entries. The last three - RAM, Silverado and Hummer, typical example of US vehicles that are build with zero care for reliability and quality - no doubt why Holden and Ford Aus had similar issues here as well. The X - class, yeah an overpriced badge engineered thing based on a Navara (more so as Mercedes design and manufacture their own commercial vehicles, really cutting corners here).
As for the Hilux, I did read or hear somewhere the quality has dropped in the past 15 years, whether that's to do with moving production from Japan to Thailand, presumably to save costs. No doubt these are still very capable utes, but expensive for what they are.

Hoobloodyray! I drive a Hilux at work. I have to agree that it is over priced considering what it offers. We also have a BT50 with the 3.2 ford ranger motor. I have to say I can't rate the Hilux above the Mazda BT50. We use both vehicles in urban and rural settings. We drive highway kilometres and the only time I'm glad I'm sitting in either vehicle is when we are on dirt. Both are really clunky on the highway. There's got to be a Hilux cult.

The x class v6 actually seems like a really good deal on the used market. The values seem to plummet, meaning you're getting a nicer Navara with a V6 for less hilux money, and I don't think anyone really off-roads these things it's just a Navara Under the Skin so it shouldn't be a problem to keep maintained although the engine could be interesting

Agree with some, but the hilux in this list doesn’t makes sense. In the end, you get what you pay for when it comes to a Bakkie (Ute). And actually Ute I guess comes for utility. So I want a bakkie that performs well and is reliable. Bells and whistles great, but it’s not really why I am buying it. Plus, i can always buy a lower spec hilux if I don’t want to spend as much… hilux has proven its worth in aus and sa, 2 of the toughest places.

    • @user-fs3dg1po2z

    • @nemanjacanak8890

I hate how people really love to shit on any popular car just because they like a different car. If you don't want to buy a Hilux, don't buy one, it's that simple, go ahead and get a ranger or Isuzu or a Navara. Just it's annoying when people who don't ever research or have experience try to prove a point against the Hilux, and plus there's more than just the Hilux from Toyota, Land cruisers and prados are other options, and if the budget is not for you, get a 2nd hand vehicle, unless you really want something nice, go for the lower spec vehicles especially the Hilux range. Overall I just hate when I go to comment or videos with too much bias against a car, especially reviews. But I know this video is full of bias as it's for ''overrated vehicles''. Also just to point out, experience will always be better than information, because you can first hand know what's wrong and not wrong, that's why I own a Hilux and why I enjoy it. The same can be said for others.

  • @TwistedDonners
    @TwistedDonners 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Hilux (or as my old man and myself call it the Hilaxative) is not a ute that can fit 3 adult men comfortably in the single cab manual form as you run the risk of someone accidentally grabbing the wrong gearstick/handbrake which I know from experience (haven't had the wrong stick grabbed yet but do get my leg hit with the gear stick while sitting there as can't move legs out the road enough to allow for the gear changes to be done without interference)
Also another ute that's overated is the Foton Tundland. This is like the Ram,Hummer and Chevy on this list in its a case of how many Ls/km not kms/L and that's coming from a bloke my dad's talked to who had one for 7 months before swapping it for a Triton.
And each background was appropriate for each ute be it for the comments you might get to the actual vehicles reputation themselves.
Are you guys going to do a follow up to the bond list and do the best cars driven by the bond villans any time soon?

@@R6_Tane I've only been in single cab utes so I honestly couldn't say with a dual cab ute sorry.
If you're asking about a single cab the 2 that can fit 3 adults in somewhat comfortably that I've personally been in are the 1980s Rodeo 2000 and the early naughties Ford Courier.

    • @user-fs3dg1po2z
      @user-fs3dg1po2z 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@R6_Tane None of them in this class can fit 3 adults in the front, they're just too small. I've been 3 up in the front of a 3 seater falcon ute which wasn't terrible, but they don't make those anymore, and other that the only vehicles with enough physical size to fit 3 in the front are the American trucks, but they aren't the same class at all, and most of the ones that end up in Australia don't have bench seats because its generally only base models that get bench seats.

As a business owner reliability can save your money for long term all of my cars are hilux or Toyota’s . Well hilux made for tradies No issue for 10+years 300000+km for sure. And the resell price can almost get back half or quoter of what you paid .none other Ute can beat that . Think about it .Extra more 10-20k than other Ute for 10+years Thats only $100+extra for every month $1000+ every year . I rather pay that lil extra to avoid breakdown on the road . Repair cost on what ever issues with other Ute and put my car to the workshop for days or week . It’s save you lots time to do better things with business or with family .Compare to that extra $1000+ a year is so much cheaper .

I fully agree with your description of the Silverado,Ram & Hummer. All 3 have the worst reliability.I'm over here in America. The Ford F-150 and up are the most sold and the Silverado & Ram are the very reason for it.
The Silverado is also plagued by rear differential issues (too much play and made in Mexico) and the Ram has serious electronic problems.

The Hilux has always confused, it's overrated, but on the other hand it's the best ute off-road and probably the second most reliable, and great at towing.

I think it's overrated cause it was the best for so long that many people buy into the myth, into the hype while ignoring just how much the competition has improved. So people buy em and pay the Toyota Tax expecting it to be 10 steps ahead of the pack, but find out it's just part of the pack in 2021

@moth3rfck3r. My first ute was a 85 Hilux compared to the 85 Holden rodeos the company I worked for had , it was light years ahead for ergonomics & comfort neither had power steering the Holdens were twice as heavy in the steering . My next purchase was a 99 hilux gutless but it did over 500,000km without putting a spanner on it just regular servicing , no dual mass flywheels or dpf’s to fail .
I’ll agree once the 5th generation Hilux came out it was all over hence I’m no longer a Hilux owner .

Maybe someone can clarify but the toyota utes in South Afr8ca almost appreciate in price due to demand. The 2019 Legends are now almost 10-15% more expensive second hand than when they were launched. Same in oz? Overrated by default..but the status that goes with it is non negotiable.

The people who buy American vehicles are often looking for towing capacity and comfort that you can't get from anything considered more reliable here. Let me know when Toyota starts selling something with a ~300kw diesel and 4.5t towing capacity.

Raptors are for the look at me I am sexy crowed, let's face it. I personally would have brought a raptor if it didn't have a silly little 2.2 ltr motor that has very little tunability left in it and a manual transmition so instead I brought a 3.2ltr 5 cylinder xlt put a tune in it and now I have a Ute that not only tows more but with a little suspension upgrade is way more capable yet still cost less than a raptor. The Raptor let everyone down with its engine transmition combo and the low towing capacity because if you off road you usually camp and carry equipment.... The raptor is great off road yes but it's a day trip Ute only not a let's go bush for a couple of days type Ute and in Australia's vastness is kind of silly for the market basically FORD kind of dropped the ball with the raptor what it needed was a 3ltrish V6 turbo diesel with a better pay load and that would be worth the price tag to tackle the off road trips. It's just not really that practical for anyone who towes a van/camper or a tradie who carries anything in the tray which is what the majority of Ute owners are.

Haha.. finally! I’ve been saying this for years. The Hilux is average. I mean it can do what all the other d/cab 4x4’s can do, you just pay about 10 - 15k extra for, the ugliest Ute, worst fuel consumption and a list of issues. Even with the 79 series, Toyota firmly has the wool pulled over a lot of people’s eyes.
I work in the automotive industry and still people say, oh, buy a Hilux. I’m always question it, why?! And they go.. umm... because they’re the best. I say, in what way? They’re like, umm.. because that’s what everyone says. Hahaha.. gotta give it to the Toyota marketing team though.. been resting on its laurels for decades.
