    I didn’t know I could do that with my hardy geraniums. I’ll be having a go next weekend.

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I’ve been trying to find out how to take cuttings from these hardy geraniums for years, literally! I know that some of them can be easy enough to split, but some of them Geranium Patricia for instance seem to grow from one centre point so I’ve been too unsure to split those type incase I kill the plant. Could this be done late summer early Autumn, like now for instance?? Thanks again, am so pleased I’ve found your channel!

      Hi Maria Jones, it’s best to take root cuttings in spring when the plant starts it’s growing season. You can take them now but there is a greater chance of them rotting whilst waiting to start activity growing again. If you have a big enough plant take lots and lots of root cuttings to improve your chances of success. If I was you I’d wait until spring to get them going. I hope this is of some help, all the best of luck Robbie 🌻

      Hi again Maria Jones, sorry, forgot to say that geraniums grow pretty quickly from seed so, if you have any this year I’d have a go at sowing a few. It’s always good to try a couple of different methods when propagating from a special plant 🌻🌸🌹

    Hi, First of all, thank you so much for being so lively, enthusiastic and un-boring! I just love listening/watching and catching your excitement. Ok, so one of my questions is, as I live in South west France and we are about a month ahead of the UK, gardening and weather wise, am I too late to do this now? Next; your topsoil always looks lovely but I am saddled with really heavy clay soil, with pure clay only about half a spade deep below, so there’s only about 15cm of “topsoil” if you can call it that. Do you think I should use something else in the mix instead? Sadly, I can’t easily get geraniums here (I so want some blue/purple ones) but would love to try this with a gorgeous peony I have. Thanks again for all the inspiration. Best wishes from France

      Hi Stephanie Fritchley, it’s an absolute pleasure to inspire, I don’t get out much, positively agoraphobic. The vids were my kids idea a few years ago, I’m still amazed people watch them! You can take cuttings from different plants all year, root cuttings are supposed to be taken in winter but I’ve had success in mid summer. So long as plants are actively growing they usually find a way to survive. Don’t worry too much about the topsoil in the mix, you can just use sand so long as you make sure it doesn’t dry out. The soil and peat are used to retain moisture more than anything. Thanks for your message from France, in the early 90s I lived in the French alps as working as a shepherd, you have brought back a whole host of wonderful memories🐑🌻, all the best of luck with your gardening projects this year Robbie

      Hi Martini Chip, I have found they work best during the plants growing season, so yes anytime during the summer or early autumn is fine. I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

      Hi Darlene Scott, sorry for the late reply, I’m not sure, I know that they grow readily from seed but root cuttings, I don’t know. Only one way to find out really, give it a go if you have an established plant. I don’t know if it will work but it’s got to be worth a go. This is what propagation is for me, just trying and seeing what happens! Sorry not to be of more help, best of luck Robbie 🌻

    Do you always use a sand compost mix when sowing, propagating etc. I’m growing/sowing loads of seeds and just wondered if I should be using a bit of sand too.

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Fishface Fin, the sand isn’t essential, it just helps with the drainage. It’s basically like a John innes seed mix. Google John Innes mixes if you are interested, it’s a collection of compost mixes developed at the John Innes horticultural institute many years ago.🌻

    Hi, I wanted to ask, as I am going to do this with some peonies - do you keep watering the soil/sand/compost mix, or is the first watering enough? Thank you.

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi H M, just make sure the compost doesn’t dry out completely. Not too wet and not too dry, like growing from seeds. As with all propagation it’s mainly a case of having to keep an eye what’s happening each day. I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

      @@stinkyditchnursery750 thank you. I cut my peony roots this morning and made a combination of grit/sand and compost, covered it with 1/4 inch of mix and I have put them on a windowsill inside but I have turned all the radiators off in that room. I am hoping that will do. I appreciate your advice.
