How I Made my DEERSKIN JACKET

  • This is how I made my deerskin jacket using a pattern I purchased and modified. Also how to make a shirt out a sheet or similar cloth to test fit the garment before cutting the leather. This is not a true buckskin as I didn't remove the grain from these skins after or before I tanned them. I plan on making more buckskin garment as i have removed the grain off other hides . These hides may seem stiff because I stretch them on a frame so they lay flat to work better with patterns.

      Yeah I would make a pattern from a non stretchy cloth like a sheet or painting drop cloth. If the hides are factory tanned the hides might be stretchy and might bag out if you make it too big so I hope this helps!

    This is really cool! I just got into bowhunting last year and have tanned a few hides. Ive done a couple wallets and sheeths so far but this would be great. What method do you use for tanning ?

      I use Van Dykes pickling crystals (citric acid) and their bark tan-quebarco extract I believe then I use their prosoft oil mixed with water heated to120 degrees then painted into the still damp hide. I am getting ahead of myself I use their dehairing kit to remove the hair. All materials comes with instructions and I tan in plastic 32 gallon trash cans. I hope this helps.

      @@mightymikey6798 Or you could do like I did and buy them from guys at work. Some even gave them to me just so they didn't have to throw them out. Good luck hunting and buck skinning!

    How many skins did it take to make that jacket...???

    • @robertllarson1511
      @robertllarson1511  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe it was 6 because of it being a XXL pattern and a lot of the skins had holes too large to stitch shut. I bought hides and was given hides that were skinned not very carefully. Most of these guys were just going to throw them out anyways so they were glad to get a few bucks for them and just bring them to work for me. I hope this helps.

    how did you sew the fringes between the sleeve?

    • @robertllarson1511
      @robertllarson1511  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I had the sleeve inside out and matched up the edges of the sleeve with the fringe uncut side sandwiched evenly between them .I had all the holes for sewing already punched in all pieces. I hope this helps. Happy buck skinning !
