Helen's chase scene has to be one of the most intense cat and mouse sequences in horror movie history next to Scream 2 with Gale. The outcome is so heartbreaking, ye poetic because it's the reason we remember it. She went fighting.

Scream, The Craft and I Know What You Did Last Summer were the three big movies that brought back horror for the younger generation. Before these movies were released, the teens growing up in the 90's only had the great 70's and 80's classics to watch and they were getting dated. Wes Craven's Scream is a masterpiece and will forever have a connection with The Craft. I Know What You Did Last Summer was the third revival horror movie released, but it wouldn't have existed without the popularity of Scream. And The Craft alone would never have carried the horror genre through the 90's and would've fallen into obscurity. Every horror movie made after Scream to this day wouldn't have existed if not for Scream. That's how important Scream is to the genre, and that's why I Know What You Did Last Summer did so well in theaters. With that being said, I love I Know What You Did Last Summer and consider it a classic.

Actually, the actors were pretty close to the characters ages. All between 18-21 except Ryan who was 23. Even so they’re playing 18 year olds so not too far off. Kevin Williamson actually wrote ikwydls before scream but scream was green lit first and its success is what allowed for this film to be made. 🎉

One of my all time favorite 90's horror/mystery films! Sarah Michelle Gellar's chase scene is the BEST chase scene in horror cinematic HISTORY! She fought and ran so hard only to just fall short of surviving, and it hurts every single time!

I'm disappointed you didn't show your reactions to the goofiest moment from this film (and any late 90s horror film), the scene where Jennifer Love Hewitt is screaming "What're you waiting for?!?" and spinning around in the middle of the street, it's so unintentionally hilarious. 😄😄😄
The horror films from this period do hold a special place in my heart. You should also watch Urban Legend, House on Haunted Hill, and The Craft.
It's funny you guys mentioned Scooby-Doo, you should watch the live-action Scooby-Doo with both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. from this film (also Matthew Lillard from Scream and Mr. Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson!). It's horror-adjacent, and I think it's better than people give it credit for (mainly because of the Scrappy-Doo stuff).

You should give this a rewatch sometime and consider it’s got a lot of subtext in it about the fears and traumas associated with growing up and not having life go like you thought it would when you were younger. I agree with you that the first half is stronger than the back half, and it does become a little too cheesy in the finale but for me the reason it has stuck around as much as it has is because of the relatability of the main characters. I think everyone has memory of feeling vulnerable during that transition period from high school into adult life.

Interesting facts about the actors - this is the movie that brought together Sarah Michelle Gellar (who had already won a Daytime Emmy playing Kendall Slater on "All My Children") & Freddie Prinze Jr. - they are still married today with kids. Ryan Phillippe made daytime history playing the first openly gay teenage role (Billy Douglas on "One Life To Live") & would later go on to marry Reese Witherspoon.
Jennifer Love Hewitt was starring on the show "Party Of Five" when this was released. Johnny Galecki had already played "David" on the show "Roseanne" & later would play Leonard on "The Big Bang Theory." The actress who played Helen's sister Elsa, was Miss Teen USA 1990, Bridgette Wilson.

This film was written by the same writer of Scream but written prior to scream. But this was based on a YA Novel from the 1970s. The novelist doesn’t like the film since the book was a thriller and not a slasher. She stopped writing Thrillers after the murder of her daughter in the late 1980s.
The book is different though. In the book they hit a child and the ‘killer’ is the kid’s older brother who turns out to be both Julie and Helen’s new boyfriends but the reader doesn’t know he’s the same person due to him using different alias.

I think the reason we don't see some of the deaths is that 90s horror was trying to distance themselves from the over-the-top, campy, bloody kills of 80s slashers. (Despite still having its own campy style) Not seeing the kills didn't bother me personally, but I do agree that this was like two different films mashed together, with the major tone shift at the end that you guys picked up on. However I do still enjoy this film and re-watch it occasionally. Not the best of films, but not the worst either and still a staple in the horror genre that is referenced and parodied a lot, so still worth a watch to understand the references alone.

Kevin Williamson actually adapted this script from a book before he wrote Scream and couldn’t sale it. After Scream was so successful a studio bought it. So you can tell he was getting his feet wet before the excellence that was Scream’s screenplay. I do think Scary Movie ruined it for you though because it is a classic 90’s horror

Scream was a highly self-aware satire of slasher films. This is a mindless formula imitation of Scream's surface aspects, so it's like a copy of a copy, acted by people hired mostly for their family connections rather than talent (Gellar being talented was just a coincidence).

Love this film. For a slasher, the film has some stellar camera work, Anne Heche as Missy is a really great performance, Helen's chase sequence is really well crafted chase sequence and the soundtrack is great 90's. Thumbs up! It's not to be taken seriously but it has more film craft in it than most films of its genre.

It's nothing complicated about the resolution. A daughter killed in a car accident by her drunken boyfriend. Her father blames him. One year after the day of her death, her boyfriend goes to the cliffs where she was killed and is killed there by her father. The father wrote the farewell letter beforehand, so that it looks like suicide and is then run over by our group of friends.
He had the opportunity to kill some before, why didn't he? Simply because he only kills them on the day of his daughter's death. Everything always happened on July 4th.
And if you are looking for a possible reason why he killed innocent bystanders... they are possible witnesses. One was at the scene of the accident. So he could contribute something to later investigations if everyone in our group dies at once. And a dead person who was in dispute with our group is also a great suspect. He kills everyone and disappears. The other is the sister, basically for the same reason. She is a witness. So they are not useless deaths. After all, after the first murder, the father wanted to escape unrecognized.
And if you look at it objectively, the motive and its elaboration was much better and more comprehensible than in Scream.
The series was really bad and confusing. The second part was still good and then came only garbage. What was still good was "dark legends" same concept.

This was a classic to me, but the way he kept screwing with them, sneaking around way too easily and magically hiding bodies and blood was too silly. When the killer is finally revealed, he does not seem like a guy who would be so dedicated to playing games like that. He was a very serious guy who should have just gone straight after them.

  • @primepm8861
    @primepm8861 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This was all based (very loosely) on a 1973 young adult novel of the same name; they pretty much combined it with the Hook Guy urban legend and turned it into a slasher (in the book they killed a kid on a bike; frankly, I'd find the kid coming back to kill them to be even more creepier than an old fisherman).
Did not know Anne Heche died in a car accident this year. Heart goes out to her family. Even though her movies were misses, she shall be missed.

The ending on the boat was super disappointing but I loved the Helen chase scene.

This isn't set in High School, the film starts at the very end of High School but they're all college age for the rest of the film. Most actors in teen dramas and Horror films back then were closer to their real ages. Sarah Michelle Gellar turned 20 in during filming and she was playing a 18-19 year old.
Freddie Prinze Jr.(her husband) is a year older than her and Jennifer Love Hewitt was actually YOUNGER than her character, having turned 18 only a few months before filming. Ryan Phillippe was the oldest of the bunch, being a year older than Freddie Prinze Jr.
And of Course, Kevin Williamson was asked to write and produce this film right after the success of Scream. This is actually not an original script but a book adaptation.
Small fun fact: at the very beginning of the film, SMG says to Ryan Phillippe's character: "let's go to Dawson's Beach", referencing Dawson's Creek which Williamson was currently working on and whose pilot would air about 8 and a half months later in 1998.

I love this movie. I think it's only real problem is that the true climax comes too early and it's Helen's death. After that, the 2 strongest performers (Phillipe and Gellar) are gone and the less memorable characters have a very action heavy finale. It just loses some punch by finishing off with it's weakest assets. But I still find it a fun, creepy, well-made old-school mystery with a cool concept, likeable cast, well-drawn characters, excellent cinematography and a great soundtrack. 9 out of 10 for me.

And her husband Freddie Prince Jr. (and yes, they met when shooting this movie and are still together today!). I always find it weird that FPJr is with Jennifer Love Hewitt and not with Sarah Michelle Gellar in this movie, it's all wrong lol. And Ryan Philippe was also huge back then, and he was married to Reese Whitterspoon. Anne Heche is also in this movie (RIP). Man, what a cast.

Definitely watch the sequel “I Still Know” but just know that it’s super crazy and to me it knows how crazy it is. It doesn’t take itself too seriously like the original. But it’s also not too whacky like a parody. It’s just over the top and super fun. Now the 3rd movie, don’t even waste your time or energy. It’s barley even apart of the 1st two. Not a good movie in the slightest. The tv show I tried but after 3 episodes I stopped watching.

I’m not kidding, you have to watch the faculty. 1998, fantastic movie. Like not even kidding, it’s genuinely good. 90s teen horror varied in quality but the faculty is 💯
It’s also written by Williamson so it has a lot of the same funny self-awareness Scream does (only about aliens instead of serial killers). The characters are well rounded and get actual development. It’s kind of like invasion of the body snatchers meets scream meets the breakfast club. And the cast is stellar. They even got Robert Patrick who is clearly having the time of his life in his role. Good shit.
