- Itasha 痛車 - Literally in Japanese translates to a car which causes pain for those who look at it. For years now, I've seen Itasha cars driving around Tokyo's bustling cities and appearing at car meets but really never understood the culture behind it. For something that is suppose to cause pain when people look at it, why on Earth would you do it? Wanting to have my answers fulfilled, I reached out to my Rare Breed Friends back in the States for help. Next thing I knew, my little idea sprawled into underground car meet with more cars than I knew what to do with! So this time on Tokyo Tuner, join me as I dive in to the Itasha car culture!!

I'm absolutely in love with Itasha culture. It's not about being trendy, it's about just being you. Your car is a great conversation starter, and not only can you talk about your build, you can also talk to people about your favorite shows and characters, and walk away with a better understanding of the others.

I totally agree, that's why I'm making my project car into one, I'm probably gonna use megumin if I decide on a red car, or if it's more of a shade of grey/white I'll go with Ayame from Shimoneta. If it's blue I might go with Persona 3 protag or Rem, depending on how much I have to spend.
Let's be real, the only ones that can afford Itasha are working individuals. No way in hell am I going to publicly show my fetishes with my co workers. 😱

thanks.....many people cars are artwork (especially these cars)....there is all kinds of art out there. I don't have to like all forms of art, but should at least able to appreciate different forms of art. I just love to see the passion! You can see the passion in their eyes when they're talking about their cars.....BADASS!
Great coverage of some of the Itasha culture! I tripped out at 5:59 because of the Rare Breed sticker. My friend from America designed and hand cut the limited run of those die cuts! It's awesome that it made its way across the sea. I can't wait for the next vid because it's a build I've been following for awhile now!

Rock Hard if you have any Adobe Illustrator skills, you create it there (or have someone create it for you) using precise measurements of your car, then have a vinyl shop with a graphic printer print it (and if not you, they install it). It's expensive, but very worthwhile imo, I just recently had my car done, no videos of it at up on my desolate TH-cam channel with videos of my old car however lol.

See Japan can get away with this stuff because they're already known for being a bit weird and are proud of it. They are also raised differently than we are in America. So while over there this trend would be complimented and supported, over here everyone would just talk shit.
Guess that's the difference between Japanese schools using the first few years of education for establishing ethics and morals where as the states schools immediately start trying to pump out kids in K-12 so they can collect those government checks and leave the Character building to their parents.
Maybe we'd get a different reaction if we did it with Marvel and DC characters?
That is a huge part of the differences as you mentioned. I know it is starting to get a little popular in the States but I'm sure people are going to be ready to flame it v.v It does however get a little hate here in Japan by the 'normal' people. Itasha translate as painful to look at car so its not all love.. However as a rule, people are much more chill about it
People don't care as much as you think, only people who talk shit are insecure losers online lol, you're way more likely to get compliments and interest rather then hate. It's gotta be really well done though, not some half ass job.
+Dat Boii Nope. Anyone talking shit doesn't have anything better, this goes for any form of modifications in the car scene. You never see anyone with an actual good car crying and whining about shit, just people with shitboxes, no car or licence at all, etc etc. Sure, people laugh at stuff that is objectively trash, or over the top, etc but that's not the same in this scenario.
They do it right period that's what makes it different and unique they know what mods will make it look cool and make it stand out
