Fun fact: the technique Jason is describing is called fanning! He is 100% correct as to why it doesn't really lend itself to any use in tactical situations. I know in cowboy sport shooting (which is a real sport by the way, look it up it's amazing), they use specially designed lighter loads, and on stage during a performance they probably used either wax or specially designed ammunition. I also can't imagine that a soldier would want to risk that considering the quality of black powder that was available at the time (particularly for soldiers). It's crazy man!

you can make an inherently safe air canon by making the volume of the stored gas be only barely larger than the volume of the barrel. it requires a bit of math and some testing, because you are looking at the volume of a compressed gas compared to an expanding gas. If you get it right though, you should see your projectile actually get sucked back into the barrel if the stored volume is too low, and barely pop out when its just right. its a design Rob Cockerham came up with about 15 years ago for an air canon tank for kids.

Fun fact, the meow-ntain joke works in Japanese, too; the japanese word for mountain is 山 (yama) while the equivalent of "meow" is ニャー (nyā), so if you put the two together you'd end up with something like ニャま (nya ma).

Lol that's not the smallest. Me and my friend use to make even smaller ones out of pill bottles, pen tubes, push pins, the electric sparker off a cheap dollar store lighter and dollar store hair spray. Maybe 3 Inches long.
You would cut a slice of potato and then use the pen tub tip to get a tiny piece of potato from the slice and the pen innards to shove it down to the back. Then take the cap off the bottle, spray, cap it, then push the electric sparker. Youd hear a nice pop and if you shot your friends it would leave welts. Sometimes a bruise. We had many a spud battles like that lol

Now for the modified version if you are up for the challenge. I think one could use a drain master air de-clogger device that you have featured before to make a bug a salt cannon of some sort. For even more action the drain master plunger pump could be replaced by one of the drill air pump so the bug salt cannon would be fully automatic, thoughts?

you should try using the top of a 20 oz bottle in the big potato gun. heat up a nail and push it through the cap then put a quarter behind it so it doesnt push back out. just cut the bottle far enough down so it just slides into the barrel. the light weight projectile is so much faster than a potato lol

I made something similar to this scale, but basically a mini potato just with a hotel shampoo bottle, the striker from a BBQ lightweight and a straw. Used cologne as a propellant, you guys should try it! Has more oomf

This actually reminds me of the orange peel gun we used to make in 8th grade. Kinda like a tiny potato gun but even smaller. The ink tube from a disposable pen emptied of the ink and pen parts removed and a mostly straightened paperclip were all that was necessary. Jab both ends of the tube through an orange peel and jam the paperclip into one end of the tube. Tiny. Discrete. Annoying as hell to the person sitting nearby with orange pieces hitting them from seemingly nowhere.
